Time to leave Auckland and head South to see what awaits. We packed up Pip (we named our Kiwi car), bade a found farewell to the hot tub and then we were off! Our first stop was the city of Hamilton. There we explored the Hamilton Gardens. Not only was this attraction free, it was very beautiful! A myriad of different types of gardens in spring time can't be beat. My favorites were the Italian Renaissance, the Traditional English and the Indian Retreat. Jeff enjoyed the Italian Renaissance along with the extensive kitchen garden. After getting our eyes filled with outdoor beauty, off to find substinance! We found the Good George Brewery. And what a find! Jeff got an amber ale while I ordered the sparkling ale. Uh....yum! A plate of pork and beef sliders later, ... read more

Day 3 began with rain...lots and lots of rain! Uhmmm...rain was not part of my extensive itinerary. Today was the day we rent scooters and get our wine on over at Waiheke Island! And the dinner cruise, remember that? Got a call first thing saying it was canceled due to the weather. Okay, no time to panic, it's time to improvise! Armed with my tablet and the bountiful assortment of Auckland travel magazines I swiped at the visitor center, I went surfing... I came upon a listing advertising self guided tours for Howick Historical Village. And lookie here...a coupon for buy 1 get 1 free admission...sweet! (I am my father's daughter it seems) So the decision was made to go to the village versus the Auckland Museum. Education was the new theme for the day instead ... read more

After a wonderful night's sleep, Jeff and I wake up with one thing on our minds...coffee! We didn't buy any coffee grounds at the store cause the apartment we're staying in doesn't have a proper coffee maker. No problem I say, we'll just do a drive thru...well...after the Google search it was discovered that maybe the Kiwis don't take coffee as seriously, frequently or as copiously as us Pacific Northwest peeps. But not to be deterred, we set out to find our magical morning elixir...1st place, not open even though the website said differently (damn the Internet)...2nd place again not open but wait! Jeff points out the McDonalds a block away. Now I had stated prior to the trip we would NOT be stepping into that particular establishment, or one like it, while we were here. ... read more

We arrived in Auckland Saturday morning at 6 am. The 13 hour flight from Los Angeles wasn't bad...just long! Customs and immigration wasn't difficult, sim card was purchased, clothes were changed and it was then just a matter of getting our car. The car rental shuttle came and picked us up and we had our wheels soon there after. (Side note, everything was on the left side and you drive on the left. Jeff stopped laughing at me for continuing to flip the wipers on instead of the turn signal when it was his turn to drive...yeah, not as easy as you think it is!) By 7:30am, Jeff and I were ready, let the adventure begin! And we spent the next 2 1/2 hours completely lost! With our brand new sim card, smart phone, Google maps...who ... read more
