I am in Chiang Mai now staying with some family friends. It is great having local tour guides! They drove me all around Chiang Mai the last 2 days showing me places I would never have seen and taking me to great places to eat that I would never have found. It is nice getting a locals perspective. On Sunday Jim, May and their son Jake picked me up at the airport and we first went to get some food at a great Vietnamese place. We then went to a Wat (temple) outside of town that was excavated after a landowner found a brick in the ground. There were a number of these temples found underground about 4 or more feet down. We took a buggy pulled by a pony to see them all...it was pretty ... read more

Yes, I am still alive and well and not yet in prison, kidnapped, or sold into prostitution. I even talked to strangers and got a little drunk. Amazing I am still alive I know. So, the flight was LONG. And the food was horrible, but I had to eat it being that my flights were so incredibly long. Anyway, got to Bangkok late last night, checked into my hostel, all was well...I managed the public transportation pretty well on no sleep. The people here are great. I have not felt uncomfortable at all. No high pressure sales tactics like I was expecting either. So, today I wandered around the city, my feet are killing me! I went to a market full of loads of crap, aisles and aisles all selling the same junk. Ate some questionable ... read more

So, today’s blog is brought to you by Jeanette. We left Dunedin, but not before visiting the “steepest street in the world” in the Guinness Book of World Records. We walked to the top and back down, not feeling it was really any steeper than a San Francisco street, but, if they say so, I believe them. We then drove north to Mt Cook, a spectacularly high peak where we took a short hike through the snow to view its beauty. Then we drove to a town called Methven where we went snowboarding on Tuesday at a ski field called Mt Hutt. More snow than we’ve seen in New Zealand so far, and the best ski area yet…we had a good day. Tuesday night we went to Christchurch where we spent the next week at a ... read more

Entry by Ryan: Wednesday July 11th, Its seems today we did nothing but drive, after waking up and packing the car we drove out of Invercargil to the Catlins conservation park on our quest to find penguins. As always we drove through plenty of beautiful scenery along the coast and arrived at our destination. For once we arrived at our destination to coincide with the proper tides, this time to see a petrified Jurassic forest. Walking along the rocks on top of the petrified forest was cool, but what we had really wanted to see was penguins, there were also frequently dolphins is the bay but we were not as excited to see those. Unfortunately we were not lucky at this beach with any wildlife, except the usual seagulls. So we decided to continue our search ... read more

Post from Ryan: So…what’s today? Where was I yesterday? What town am I even in today? I seem to rarely know anymore. But to start the week we finally enjoyed a few American delicacies that we have been craving (see picture), Mmmmmm Dr. Pepper. Unfortunately though we have been having this undying urge for Cheese-Its and they don’t exist here. And now to our week… Wednesday July 5th: We drove to Wanaka after glacier exploring in Franz Josef (see last post), and searched high and low for a hostel or somewhere to stay in the general vicinity of Wanaka. Unfortunately for us it is the school holidays here and everyone is down in this area skiing right now, so everything was booked. It’s like trying to find a cheap room in Tahoe at the last minute ... read more

Well even though the trip from the north island to the south island took us from east to west it certainly seems a lot colder here. After departing the ferry Friday afternoon in Picton we drove west to Nelson, one of the major wine regions in the country. However no wine tasting for us. Unfortunately, that night we choose what was probably our worst hostel yet, in a creepy old house from a horror movie kind of way…it wasn’t awful but a little run down and a little dirty, plus it was supposed to have free internet but that wasn’t working. Saturday morning we got some information on the nearby Abel Tasman National Park, then we wandered around the city of Nelson and did a quick heritage walk before departing to Takaka where we would stay ... read more

Post from Ryan: Currently we are on a ferry crossing the Cook Straight, which will take us from the North to the South Island, and since we stayed outside taking pictures too long we weren’t able to catch a seat for the movie, so we figured we’d fill you in on our latest week. So after Saturday night in the city visiting Jeanette’s friend Goldy we headed south to Waitomo Caves. This area is famous for its cave systems filled with glow worms, which in reality are a type of larvae which live in the caves and glow a bluish tint in order to attract insects. We decided to go on a caving adventure here. But in New Zealand fashion a cave trip is hardly a simple walk in a cave. After a freezing night in ... read more

We started off our week on Monday by heading out to the Coramandel Peninsula, just east of Auckland. Our first night was spent camping at the trailhead to the Pinnacles, a very cold night, where we seemed to be the only people in the entire park camping. The trail to the Pinnacles the next day was an 8 hour hike, which despite camping at the trailhead, we got a late start and made it back right at sunset. The trail was awesome with scary suspended footbridges, many beautiful rock staircases, and steller views. The next day, Wednesday, we went to the Waiau Waterworks, a quirky little tourist trap with all of their main attractions powered by water. The best part about this place was the children’s area though, with rides such as flying bicycles, a hamster ... read more

Kia Ora (Maori for hello), so after searching the papers for a few days, we found what we are hoping is a good deal. we got a 1988 subaru leone wagon. we were a little scared to buy it from the guy, he seemed a bit sketchy, at first the car would not start because he claimed the inside light was left on all night. so we jumped it and took it for a drive, that was the good part, everything seemed to work just fine. after the battery charged it started again with a bit of work. thats the only thing we are a bit worried about, but for 670 NZ$ we can't complain too much. although it was supposed to be 650 according to the paper we saw, but he claimed it was 699 ... read more

Sorry for our absence of posts in the past few weeks, but we have been either busy or on the road unable to find any internet. So we’ll try to sum everything up here. The past week was spent driving around the northlands, the area north of Auckland, prior to that we spent a few more days in Auckland and got the car all ready for the trip. So we’ll just jump right to the road trip. We first stared by taking a weekend trip to Julie and Monique’s parents beach house in Algies bay, just about an hour north of Auckland on the east coast. The bay was really beautiful and their house was great with mandarin trees right in the backyard. The first night there we went to the bar to watch the All ... read more
