Today we have a tour of the Colosseum and have to be at our meeting site at 9:15. We leave the hotel around 8:00 knowing we have plenty of time as it is about a 35 minute walk. A friend, (Lia) that recently took the same tour, suggested we pick up a sandwich as there are no good places to get a bite around the Colosseum during the 30-minute break. During our previous walks around Rome we noticed there are many small stores where sandwiches are pre-made so on our way to our tour we picked up a couple. These small shops are like ABC stores in Hawaii meaning they are on about every corner. We arrive in plenty of time. However we are having difficulty finding the meeting spot. After walking in circles for 20 ... read more

At SFO, no problems getting baggage checked and getting through Security. We enjoyed a Manhattan while waiting for our flight. The flight had a slight delay of approximately 15 minutes. The only issue on this flight was the turbulence towards the last half of the flight. Every time Lisa tried to fall asleep, the plane bounced around. Jim took his happy pill so he got about 4 hours of sleep (the two whiskies served after dinner also helped). Lisa got 1 hour of sleep. We had a 1 ½ hour layover in London. Jim was looking forward to going to the whiskey shop and also having some fresh hand pump ales before our flight. However, the travel gods decided otherwise. We arrived at Heathrow and were delayed getting to the gate by 15 – 20 minutes. ... read more

Thursday October 25 Day 19 With a nudge from Jim, Lisa is suddenly awake to hear from Jim that Pablo just hit his 3rd homerun of game 1 of the World Series. It is 4:00 am. Jim was listening to the game on his iPhone and immediately switched over to the iPad so that we could watch the rest of the game. What an exciting game and the crowd was loud!!! Following the Giants has been a little crazy on the sleep schedule but once the Giants finished off the Tigers at 5:30 am our time, we did manage to get back to sleep for a few hours. We head out to a local café for a simple breakfast of coffee, orange juice and a croissant. We wanted to check out a shopping district not too ... read more

Tuesday October 23 Day 17 Another travel day and we made arrangements to have a taxi pick us up at our hotel at 9:45 AM to catch a train from Bruges to Brussels. The only ticket we had was for the train from Brussels to Paris, which was scheduled for 12:37 and we still needed to purchase our ticket from Bruges to Brussels. Our taxi driver arrived and was soon putting our luggage in the back of the van he was driving. He asked Jim why one of the bags was so heavy and Jim told him it was full of Bruges crap, the taxi driver laughed and loaded it into the van. On the way he chatted us up and we asked if Dutch was the language spoken in Bruges of which he answered “we ... read more

Sunday, October 21, 2012 – Day 15 Lisa was suffering from a head cold so we slept in just so she could get some rest. Even though she was not 100 percent nothing was going to keep her from visiting the Frites and Chocolate Museums. The weather was chilly, about 50 degrees and the forecast called for on and off rain all day. After breakfast at a café we visited the Frites Museum, dedicated to history of the potato and how to perfectly deep-fry it into crispy fries. Sounds kind of corny but the museum was anything but. Well worth a visit especially when the weather is cold. Potatoes originated in Peru and found their way to Belgium where it was discovered that deep-frying them was the best way to enjoy potatoes. The best thing is ... read more

Friday October 19 After checking out of our hotel at 9:30 we left Beaune and once again found ourselves on the motorway towards the city of Dijon with the help of Monique. Our first stop was along the motorway to get some fuel and have a light breakfast. We know our day was going to be hectic because our trip to Brugges would be on four trains at four different stations. Our first challenge was to find where to drop off the rental car in Dijon. Monique did her best but was not as accurate as we would have liked. Somehow, with a little luck we found the Europcar office outside the train station and dropped off the car at 11:00 AM. Our first train was leaving Dijon at 12:01 and arriving at Gare Lyon in ... read more

Wednesday October 17, 2012 – Day 11 We started our day in Beaune at the local street market, which is smaller on Wednesdays than it is on Saturdays, and picked up some cured olives and bread to go along with our cheese and salami from the day before for a picnic later in the day. With all of our supplies in hand we drove out into the wine country of Burgundy and came across one of our favorite wineries from when we were here in the year 2000, Chateau de Pommard. Little did we know how much had changed since our last visit. When we were here in 2000 we were greeted by the winemaker and taken on a small tour to the caves and tasted a few vintages. Now the winery has a visitor center, ... read more

Monday October 15, 2012 We checked out of our hotel (Le Mas des Carassins) in St Remy about 10:30 AM and headed toward Beaune for our next adventure. If you want to visit the Provence area, we would recommend St Remy and even this hotel. The hotel is walking distance to town but not in the thick of the tourist area. It would be especially nice in the warmer months to take advantage of the pool and outdoor area. The weather was cold, about 50 degrees and the winds were blowing about 30 MPH as we departed so we so agreed we had the best weather during our stay. We filled the car up with diesel, which again was another adventure since Jim’s French is limited to ordering food or beer but we managed. We discovered ... read more

Saturday October 13 Jim has always wanted to see the roman coliseum in Rome but there are two smaller arenas close to St Remy so we decide to travel to Arles to see the one there. The other reason we chose Arles is there is a Saturday market that our travel book says is very large. We follow Monique, the name we gave the voice on our GPS, to the city center only to find that the city is very busy because of the market and Monique takes on a wild ride through the city center with streets so small you could literally spread your arms and touch the walls on each side of the street. Needless to say we were a little nervous and there were a couple of turns we thought our small rental ... read more

Hi everyone, thanks for your interest in reading our blog. We decided to leave the hotel around 9:30 since we had no idea where to drop off the car and get to the train station. As Jim packed our luggage in the car it started to rain but we knew the weather report for Provence was going to be 75 degrees when we arrive later in the day. The one thing that really helped us so far was the GPS we brought with us. We never got lost and always found what we were looking for. Jim punched in the address for the drop off point for the rental car and we hit the road. French drivers are disciplined and always use their turn signals. As we approached Caen we filled up the car with diesel ... read more
