Today is our Train to Denali. We had a very good breakfast. It was the usual hot breakfast with eggs, oatmeal, fruits and yogurt. We called Uber to the train station. It was predicted to rain 100%.It was drizzling as expected. We left the hotel around 8 am for the 9:15 am train. We had packed luggage in a way that we would keep 3 suitcases in the cloak room in the hotel itself. Since we are staying in the same Fairfield after our return from Denali in Anchorage, we could pick them up at that time. It was a very easy check in process. We showed our tickets and dropped off our luggage except for the backpack. We waited in the depot for 20 minutes before they bused us to the train platform. It was ... read more

Lot of anticipation and excitement as the day started in Chandler. We had a brunch at home. There was leftover food from previous day and we finished it. Sumi arrived around 11 AM to take us to the airport. We left home around 11:20 am or so. Once we reached the airport, we realized the flight has been delayed to depart at 2 pm. Since Sandhya had United gold (or something to that effect), we were added to the upgrade list. We got only 1 upgrade. Praveen was allowed to use it. Later, he would confirm that there was nothing special about the business class. The seats were bigger and roomier. There was no special food etc. We reached SFO by 4:30 pm. Pranav had already landed and was at the gate for the Anchorage flight. ... read more

Last day full day of trip before getting on the long ride to USA. We had to pay separately for breakfast here. After our morning duties, we checked the breakfast spread to see if it is worh paying 15 euros per plate. The spread seemed good. We finised our breakfast in the hotel itself before checking out. Front desk folks were willing to hold the luggage for us. Our flight to Frankfurt was to leave at 1:51 PM. We planned to return to the hotel by 1 PM. Since the train station was only 0.5 kms, we decided to walk to the station. After leaving the bags, we again walked to Salzburg old town. Elevator to top of the hill for a bird's eye view of the city Got tickets for old town boat ride Walked ... read more

Have to leave Vienna today. Did not feel like leaving the place. One of the best experiences for us of all stays we have had in hotels. The place is also close to all the attractions. We decided to continue learning about the history of Vienna. We packed as much as possible before we left for a tour of Royal apartments and Sisi museums. My recommendation is to get an audio guide of the facility. This is an individual gadget that you can listen to at your own pace and walk around the museums. These museums are huge. So we hurried through the important items and headed back to the Hotel. Our check out time was 1 PM. We came back from the Museum around 12:30, checked out and headed to the Vienna West station for ... read more

We got ready by 8:30 or so. Since we had combined museum tickets, today's plan was to visit the Koonst museum. We headed to the breakfast lounge instead. Here we did have additional items prepared. We had made to order omelettes, yogurt with granola etc. It was fairly a good spread. Our first stop was the Koonst museum. This is a huge museum with multiple floors and sections. We started from the European section and then moved on to Greek, Roman and Egypt. After 3 hours of information overload, we wanted to take a break. There were plenty of antiquities to see. Again, we got the audio guide. It is quite cheap and very descriptive on certain topics. The name of the museum Koosthistoriches means, collection of items from history. This initially started as a hobby ... read more

After our morning routine, we finished our morning breakfast at the executive lounge. We had a choice of going to the regular breakfast serving area. We decided to try that on the next day. We had the 'Rick Steves' - best of Europe guide that covered Vienna in quite a detail. WE checked the front-desk and realized all the attractions are walkable. Rick Steves had given a step-by-step walking tour that covers the majority of the attractions in the downtown area. We followed the steps by starting the walking tour from the Opera house, Sacher torte bakery, churches, Stephen's Cathedral, Royal palaces and Museums. This is just a walking tour and does not include viewing them. But we did view inside in case of churches. Our plan was to do the quick ones first and start ... read more

Today is the day we leave for Vienna. Since we had reserved tickets for the 2:39 PM train, we planned to at least complete one additional sightseeing item in Prague. Our initial plan was to go to "National Museum'. When I checked online (some folks mentioned this yesterday as well), the main museum is closed for renovation and only annexe buildings were open. We decided to skip the museum and go to Petrin hill instead. This is in an excellent location close to the Prague castle. Gardens, observation tower, observatory, restaurants and other attractions are in this area. There is a small cable car that takes you up from the street. We had to finish our showers, pack and finish our breakfast before the check out. We requested the front-desk to hold on to our luggage. ... read more

This morning was very similar to yesterday. Weather was much better today. We finished our breakfast in the hotel. Since we are not too far from the attractions, we decided to walk toward the main square called - Wenceslas. The train station is very close to the square. We went to the station first to make reservations for Vienna travel. We were able to complete the reservation in no time since we already had tickets with us. All we needed was to make seat reservations in the train for 4 additional euros. We walked to Wenceslas Square as the starting point. This road leads all the way to the old town square. It is a well kept thoroughfare with walkway in the middle of the road. National Museum is at the start of this road. The ... read more

First full day in Prague. We had to sleep a bit extra today until 7:30 PM. Breakfast here is not included in the daily rate. We will have to pay 12 Euros in addition per person here. After morning shower etc, we headed to the breakfast. If you compare this to the hotels we have been to in India, this spread is very average. THere is no hot item other than bioled eggs. There were varieties of pastries, bread, fruit and Yogurt. It would be difficult to skip lunch with this intake. We loaded up as much as we could. Person at the reception was able to give us a map and point us to the subway station where we could buy a tram ticket to the Prague Castle. This was our first attraction. THe castle ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Nuremberg (aka Nürnberg) June 25th 2013

Our plan was to visit the Nuremberg court room and visit the DB (Deutsche Bahn) rail museum. Some had recommended that the train museum was a good one. After shower and morning oblations, we headed for breakfast. There is no hot food served here. But the area was very nicely setup with plenty of bread, boiled egg and cheese choices. There were multiple yogurt varieties. Norbert supplied us with a flask full of coffee which was quite good. Our plan of visiting the above museum went for a toss as we checked the internet and realized these are closed on Tuesdays! This was frustrating. We really wanted to see the Nuremberg Trials' museum. After some research, we found out that there is a Natural history museum of Germany in the old town area. All of old ... read more
