The Cu Chi tunnels are a huge network of tunnels (285km in total) under the whole Cu Chi area. The local people started digging them (the ground is hard clay) in 1945, when Vietnam was at war with France (typical french, as soon as someone there own size comes along, the white flags go up but they don't mind picking on the little people), they carried on digging after the war and it eventually took 16 years. These tunnels were amazing though, they had like sniper holes, hospitals and kitchens near the surface and below that had passage ways to get to and from them rigged with boobie traps, incase the americans found them and tried to set bombs.
