I hope you are feeling better! Hi,
I was in Costa Rica last spring and ended up with a nasty case of food poisoning. Not fun being sick away from home. But I will have to say that the clinic I went to in La Fortuna was the best care I've ever had. Cheaper then back home too!!! I hope the rest of your holiday is great. I loved Costa Rica, it is a beautiful country. If you haven't been to Samara on the Nicoyan peninsula...that's where I would recommend going. =0)
Absolutely gorgeous quiet beach town!
the size of a cow Damn blast, look at my past,
ripping up my feet over broken glass.
Oh wow, look at me now,
I'm building up my problems to the size of a cow
It has to be the Waterloo of the cow parade, Ensalade de Frutas. What a beauty!
How are you at frogs? Glad you're enjoying the birds. We seem to have many of the later ones identified but Hugh seems to have called most of the frogs 'frog' so you could have a go at those!
Watch out for the eruption Sounds really interesting - I'll share this page with Graham (neighbour) as I'm sure he'll want to see the volcano! Thanks for the postcard.
Chicabal Hi guys
Just returned from a 3 month trip to Quetzeltenango and the photos of Chicabal were very familiar!!
Wondering where you stayed and which school did you attend? We studied spanish for a month, and volunteered for the other two. Had a wonderful time. Just found your blog by accident looking for more info on "nahuals"!

birdies This is great - bird identification without the hassle of travel! The "bird at hotel (and everywhere else)" is a white throated magpie-jay (I'm not making this up). I am listening to the Gin Blossoms (remember them?) and planning the next Netherlands trip (Harlingen in Friesland for fish and ferries to the islands). Enjoy the wilderness, Jon.
More twitching opportunities to come Sorry John, I thought Hugh had more pictures but some of them were a bit small to put on the site. Having said that, there should be more from our last few days in Costa Rica (when we get round to blogging it - we're a bit behind!) so get your I-Spy Costa Rica Birds book out.....
twitching Thanks for the bird identification challenge, only one to see though. I think it's a ringed kingfisher (Ceryle torquata) but it's difficult to be sure without the scale - it is the largest kingfisher in the western hemisphere at about 40 cm. Looks like a male, did it have a rusty breast? I confess I did have to look this up... Great to keep up with your travels. Still winter here, snow this week and the allotment is flooded, I think my Cambridge Gage is dead.
I read this entry and the next both together - sorry to hear you're so poorly Sarah. Hope it's improved by now. Your description of the top of the scary temple was very atmospheric - I began to feel disctinctly panicky as I read it! Great photos, as ever. Sarah H.
Just been catching up with your postings. One of our computers died and I didn't have priority over homework on the other one! Love the view from your hotel. Wouldn't want to be too near the fireworks on the video! Glad to see you got some more hot spring bathing in. Interested to hear about your teaching experiences especially as Hannah's friends are planning their gap years. HMRC news: Jo and Blythe are leaving under early severance scheme as numbers get whittled down. Not available for compliance! Take care, Mike
litotes impressed by your use of understatement, such as - did i mention the earthquake - Hugh saw a saint... Great to keep up with your travels and add to your stats (I would read Jonathan's blog and add to his if i knew where it was) Did i use the subjunctive there? would that there were a subjunctive in english (that shows how archaic it sounds) - there's a great scene in the history boys using the subjunctive in french. we are just back from belgium, lots of beer but no chocolate in lent. bon voyage! jon
Ooh, hot springs - fantastic! Cream cheese and avocado sandwiches will be on the lunch menu for me this week - I can't believe I've never tried that combo before. And a saint who smokes and drinks - way to go I think is the expression. Have a great time on the next leg of your journey, love Sarah H.
Ahhhhh Bonne chance for the next stage of your journey (yes its French but I have no idea what the Spanish for good luck is - perhaps you can enlighten me!). J x
