Hello Everybody! We slept in this morning so didn’t bother with our lessons unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on how you look at it…Anyway, we took the opportunity to sleep in because we’re getting a bit desperate for sleep now with all the walking we did yesterday at the Temple of Heaven. We got up at about 11:00 and relaxed around the house a bit and eventually left to go see Tiananmen Square. They have a mausoleum there dedicated to Chairman Mao, and inside they have his embalmed body (or a wax double - there’s a bit of conjecture on that matter) where you can file through and by some flowers to rest at his feet (which apparently are collected at the end of the day and resold). Unfortunately, it’s only open until 11:00, so we well ... read more

Hello everybody, I've already written about this place before, but I didn't get to have a look at it properly because I was nervous that I was going to get arrested by the special ops police that were running around closing off streets behind me and making it so I couldn't get back to my station! This time there was no stress, Kate, Sue and me all went together, and while the girls looked at every shoe that has ever been made, I looked at shops that sold vaguely interesting products. Went into a few tea shops this time too, and I'm brewing a green tea as we speak, so I'll find out if I like it or not in a few minutes! If I start writing about pink elephants etc, it probably means that the ... read more

Hello everybody. We had our second lesson today, we're getting slightly better at all of the sounds that sound exactly the same to me. In fact, when I repeat the sounds for three different letters in exactly the same way, the teacher seems happy with me, so maybe that's the secret, there aren't as many sounds as they think there are. After that we went to see the Temple of Heaven - awesome. I should be up with all the details about why it's so famous, and how old it is and how long it took to build, but to be honest, it's just a really cool place to be and see, if you like knowing all the facts and figures...that's what Wikipedia's for... We're not sure if there's an East Gate to the temple grounds, ... read more

Hello Everybody! We had our first Chinese lesson today, so we don't have much to report for the day, we pretty much just went to bed when we got home - we were really exhausted for some reason. It was pretty cool - we feel like kids again because they make you feel like a kid again - just pronouncing sounds before you can even put them into words - although some of the sounds are incredibly difficult to make, I'll never look at the letter 'e' the same way again!!! We went out to dinner at a cool place tonight too. It's called chuarn'r. It's food on skewers that's been barbecued. Standard stuff like chicken wings, lamb and other bits of animal, but some different things too, like bread, eggplant, garlic (just garlic), mushrooms etc. ... read more

Hello everybody! We had a sleep-in today, not so many exciting things happened today - we just did some laundry and cleaning and stuff in the morning, then tried to work out what to do in the afternoon. There’s a kite shop that I wanted to go and see so I spent about an hour trying to work out the bus system so that I could get there, which I managed to do. I am the Beijing King of Travelling (sorry about that). No problems at all, two subway lines and a bus and we didn’t miss a beat! Anyways, we ended up at a place called Lotus Lane, which is around a lake and there are a million restaurants and little stalls selling things. It’s ridiculously overpriced, but it’s worth having a look around there, ... read more

Ni Hao! Yesterday and today were basically the same so I thought I would combine them both into the same blog and save your minds from melting in boredom. I just did a bit of exploring by myself because Susie’s just recovering from the cold thing she’s had forever, and just trying to sleep it off. Pretty much all fixed now so we’ll be able to have stack of fun together tomorrow!!! So anyway, yesterday I wanted to try to see how I would go on the subway so I went to the Lama temple. It was really easy, go there no troubles at all and had a bit of an explore around. I was there by myself though and I didn’t know if I was allowed to go into the temple or not, and there ... read more

Hello! WOW! Where to start?! Today was our first full day in China, and coincidentally our anniversary (thanks for the camera Mum & Dad!). We slept in a bit and had a lazy breakfast because it was raining before Lloyd and I headed off to register with the police. That’s a bit of an ordeal - I was glad Lloyd was there or it would have been a bit of a debacle - as it was it took forever! Then we ran a couple of errands and Kate & Lloyd took us out for lunch ‘cos they’re awesome. Lloyd and I met the girls at the restaurant and on the way there we noticed a few tents with Stella Artois on them, which obviously piqued our interest. Us boys popped in there afterwards to see what ... read more

Hi everyone We’re finally here! First thing’s first. Rob, you’ve been taunting everybody at the store with you chocolates, so we have decided that if you’re not going to eat them, it’s time for the poor things to see the world, so they’re touring with us. That ought to teach you. We arrived here at about 3:30 PM after a brief stopover in Kuala Lumpur. Incredibly, nothing went wrong, the flights were all on time, we found our way everywhere we needed to go, and everybody was happy! Hooray! The Beijing Airport was awesome. We’ve been stressing for the last few weeks because they’re really strict about anybody who looks like they have the flu, so there’s a questionnaire to fill out on entry asking you all sorts of questions, and when you arrive they corral ... read more

Europe » Italy » Campania » Amalfi September 11th 2007

Hello everybody. Just about caught up with our blogs now...just a few more days to go. Today we went down to the town of Amalfi. The guy that owns the B&B we're staying in, Pino, drove us down, which is very nice, and saved me from being sick on the bus! I don't know if you can see them properly, but if you looked up Amalfi on Google Earth, try to find the roads there. They're phenomenal. There's not a great amount to see down there to be honest, but there are a lot of shops selling souvenirs. Some of them are quite good, but of course there are a lot of dodgy ones. Susie bought a pair of earrings at one of them. The town of Amalfi is, apparently, quite famous for its ceramics. They're ... read more

Hello everybody. We arrived at the Amalfi Coast today. We slightly misjudged the distances we had to travel...we sort of thought it would take about half an hour to get to our accommodation from Napoli (Naples), but it turns out it's much further. First there's a train to Sorrento, then a bus from Sorrento to Amalfi, and then a taxi from Amalfi to Furore. We had sort of had it in our heads that the place we were staying was in Amalfi itself, which is why we were a bit confused about how cheap it is, but the place is a bit confusing in its names. The Amalfi coast is, as i understand it, the coast East of Sorrento, but there is also a town on the Amalfi Coast, called Amalfi. A few hundred years ago ... read more
