Asia » Vietnam » Mekong River Delta December 3rd 2007

Ok so after these four days, I am officially in love with Vietnamese people. Travelling south out from Ho Chi Minh, we decided to spend 4 days floating along the river of the Mekong Delta. The whole place is beautiful and surprinsingly diverse. I was unsure as to quite what to expect from a place full of little canals and people who live on floating houses but the experience was simply awesome. I think it was helped by the fact that we decided to spend part of our time in a homestay. It is how is sounds...you get to stay with a family and become part of their lives albeit for a day or so! The eldest member of the family was called Ba Linh, he was an old Vietnamese Communit soldier with the most gorgeous ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Southeast » Ho Chi Minh City November 30th 2007

I couldn't believe it when we arrived in Ho Chi Minh, firstly coming from a place where at least 4 layers were needed into about 40 degrees worth of heat and secondly to arriving into a country where people smile and make you feel welcome! We arrived at night and luckily had all hotels etc sorted so we were able to sit back and take in the buzz which calls itself Ho Chi Minh. Seriously I have never seen so many motorbikes and mopeds. Apparently there are 7 million people in this city and 3 million mopeds. I think I saw about 2.5 of those within about 20 minutes of being in Vietnam! We stayed right in the centre of backpackers land which was ideal as we didn't have to venture far for restaurants, bars or ... read more

Asia » China November 25th 2007

There are 6 great reasons to visit China... 1) The Great Wall...truly amazing, words can quite do it justice. 2) Pandas...so cute, cuddly and adoptable! 3) Rice terraces....delicious, unusual and you can eat the fish that live in them! 4) Tereccota Warriors...they are made of tereccota and there are lots of them. 5)Peking duck...tastes like chinese takeaway from home! 6)Chintsa...a brilliant game with feathers and what looks like a shuttle cock! ...and there are some things I'll never quite understand.... 1)Spitting...at your feet, on buses, trains, restaurants you name it. 2)Slapping....if you are in their way, you'll know about it! 3)Snotting....apparently I cant have my shoes on on their trains but a worker in McDonalds can pick his nose freely!? 4)Crotchless baby pants...I dont know where to begin...just watch where you step in the streets! 5)Acupuncture....dont ... read more

Asia » China » Beijing November 24th 2007

Beijing you have done well. You may have slightly improved my estimation and opinion of China. We have been in the capital a week now and have done most of the major "to dos" on the Beijing list. Beijing is lot more spread out than the other cities we have visited in the last 4 weeks. Whilst it does have that capital feeling to it, it perhaps isn't as visually stimulating as Shanghai or anywhere near as Westernised. When we arrived on Monday it was actually SUNNY! The first bit of blue sky and sunshine we had seen for what felt like ages, but unsurpringly it was bitterly cold. Temperatures have ranged from about 10 to -3 in the last few days! At one point I had to venture out of the hostel in 5 layers ... read more

Asia » China » Shanghai November 20th 2007

They say you are a nobody until you have done a long distance train journey is a strange and foreign country with a stomache upset... let me tell you I must now indeed be a somebody! That aside, we arrived in Shanghai and booked into a new hostel called U Cool. This hostel had superb location, really helpful staff and for once comfortable beds, when they sort out the cleanliness it'll be a winner! I had been really looking forward to Shanghai and I definitely wasn't disappointed. The city is amazing, a real not unexpected western vibe and a whole heap of stuff to do. We spent just under a week there which gave us an opportunity to really see the city and also relax a little too! The highlights for me are hard to say, ... read more

Asia » China November 15th 2007

Firstly please bare with me if this account is brief, I have already written this blog but apparently it was not saved. Beautiful! Ok so after a trip North East from Chengdu (another 20 hours by train) we arrived in the smaller city of X'ian. The city itself would be beautiful if it wasnt for the smog, but it did have a more TV/travel brochure China feel to it. Especially with the view from our hostel being of the beautiful Bell Tower; which truly was amazing all lit up at night. Our main purpose of our X'ian visit was of course to see the tereccota soldiers ( I actually met someone whoi was describing them as the terretorial army!!) however we had also been told that a visit to the Muslim quarter was a must. It ... read more

Asia » China » Sichuan » Chengdu November 13th 2007

Having never been on a sleeper train, I was unsure as to what to expect and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised despite the fact that cheapy me had asked for the cheapest bed and received the one about 30cm away from the train's roof! Nonetheless, a book finished in the 25 hours and some sleep had, I was ready to meet the pandas! The hostel we found was in a hutong just off the ancient section of the city. Sim's cozy guesthouse was a beacon of light with its cold beer and (sorry to say it) and glimpse of western food! By this time I was dying for vegetables that were not fried! Booked ourselves in for the pandas and the opera. I had wanted to take the longer journey out to the ... read more

Asia » China » Guangxi » Guilin November 6th 2007

Hurrah, oscar performance won through and after a very good overnight bus in which we given rugs and free drink and snacks, we arrived a little tired in the town of Guilin. It took about 11 hours by road to get here but with our main focus that of seeing the rice fields, we hoped it would put our previous experiences in the past. Back in the land of hostels helped, but not as much as being somewhere where at least one person spoke English! Guilin itself was again a major city with what seemed to be an array of street sellers selling everything from fetching underwear to corn on the cob! I held out high hopes for the well known solitary peak which was just north of the city centre, however if anyone is planning ... read more

Asia » China » Guangdong » Guangzhou November 6th 2007

OK, with one foot forward and the 45 degree heat a definite distant memory we braved our first bit of Chinese transport and took the three hour coach journey from Hong Kong to Guangzhou, the first major city in southern China. Mmmm a little culture shock. Cleverly we had arranged to arrive in the city on the VERY same day it was holding a major trade fair. When I say major, I mean Worldwide. Had we booked accommodation? Silly question. No. So after walking around the city for what seemed an age, being turned away from pretty much every main hostel or cheap hotel, we found sanctuary. Or at least we found a room. Well we found 2 beds... not sure I could say a room. Guangzhou, was simply our first stepping stone but we did ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong » Hong Kong Island November 6th 2007

Ok so I'm not sure you could actually get 2 places so far apart in almost everything. Left Africa and arrived in Hong Kong after 13 hour cramped and hot flight. Having done 4 countries in 3 days, tired wasnt really hitting the spot. Hong Kong is truly unique. A must for those people who have got ooodles of spare cash and a need to spend it in their varoius array of shops. Never before have I seen so many shops. Once we felt our feet had touched the ground, we headed for Victoria Peak on the old tram. Not unlike the one found on top of Snowdonia. The view from the top is well worth the travel up, you can see down over pretty much the whole of HK. Though the smog really does spoil ... read more
