Really, I'm not a party animal Carolyn: As usual your blog is a great delight to read. Who knew you were such a party girl!!! Sounds like you are having a wonderful time and boy are they keeping you busy. The pictures you sent the other day were beautiful. I found out on Sunday that my cousin, Bette Tilly, is a member of your group. Give her a hug for me. Hope she is having as good a time as your are. Continue to enjoy your adventure. I look forward to your next blog.
Denial Party animals always start off saying that they aren't.... I'm just sayin' Didn't find any typos but I wasn't looking that closely. Glad you made it to church and eager to read about the TAM air museum. Sounds like you are tasting some great foods. Eager to read more.
Sounds great! Glad to hear you are on the road again. Looking forward to reading all about your trip. We just got back from a trip to the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon and Zion. Mild by your standards, but pretty big for us!
Friendship Force Bravo my friend. I was beginning to worry about your because you had not traveled recently. Glad to see you exploring the world again. Eager to hear about your new found language skills and all the other wonderful things that you find! Eager to hear about the people you meet, the history you absorb, the dancing and a parties are a must.
Looking forward to reports! (You'll do anything to avoid a election season . . .) Sounds exhausting, but fascinating. Can't Linda give you a hand with the Portuguese? Or has she forgotten it all? I'm sure a nation willing to take on the World Cup and the Olympics will be able to handle your linguistic and wi-fi needs! Just avert your innocent eyes at the Beach, watch your purse, and have fun.
Wow! Thanks for stopping by our blog. We are leaving for Siem Reap next week so this post has been very informative. We've only scheduled three days and I'm a little overwhelmed by everything there is to see. We know we'll be dealing with extreme heat and humidity as well. Thanks for the tips and lessons learned in this post, we'll definitely put them to use!
What a delightful blog D and MJ passed your blog info on to me after they had visited you. I simply had to comment on this blog. It was so fun, well written, full of humor that I felt as if you were sitting there telling me the story in person. Thanks for taking the time to write it, and teach me the plural of y'all. I will try to incorporate that into my California vocabulary. Plus, I will have a postcard en route to England as quickly as I can.
Happy to send a card over yonder We must be real southern then, as I have said "all y'all" most sincerely, though in these parts we tend toward "you all" :) We'll have to send Gerald a line from Kentucky, and infuse it with as a much southern affectation as possible. PS: My grad school roommate was from West Virginia, and her older relatives still referenced the War of Northern Aggression. Seemed strange, given that WV was the only state to emerge out of the Civil War as a break away from the south.
Wish we were traveling with you What a great trip you are having even if the weather hasn't been all you'd hoped for....it is the UK and weather is constantly changing. I loved loved loved your time in the church cafe as you escaped from the pack. Your delightful new friends sounds positively wonderful. We will send him a post card today!
Hidden gem I've been reading about Wales for years and we are eager to get there to explore. I've heard wonderful things and you have confirmed it! We had hoped to go this year after our trip in Ireland but dang it we ran out of time. So glad you are having a wonderful trip. Always great to experience a home cooked meal.
Life, it's unpredictable Hi, Carolyn, I've loved reading your posts...as often, I feel like I'm travelling by your side. Can't wait to see you at our place on the 17th! Unfortunately, I did not get to Dublin and Cork. Barry's mom passed on May 1st, and the associated arrangements and services played out through the 7th. The trip was from May 3-10. Maybe another time. See you in 6 days!
Oh Holy Moly! As you say, some places move us and some don't. Machu Picchu moved me in ways I cannot describe. Stonehenge was really cool and I did sit and wonder ...how...why...and it was one of the first ruins I'd ever seen so it holds a special place but I was not moved the way I was at Machu Picchu. Glad you are enjoying Jabe's book. We enjoyed it also. I remember when we were in Rye, England we stayed in a B&B that was built in the 1400's or something crazy like that and it had a corner stone that said, remodeled 1680. I kept staring at that because I couldn't wrap my brain around it. Nothing in the U.S. is old. Happy travels.
Jabe I wrote to 'Jabe' via his blog but got no response. It would have been nice to meet him in York but maybe he isn't even in England anymore. Yes, the dates gobsmack me and I am always humbled by them.
More blogs to come.
Do you know the children's book Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose: the Story of a Painting, by Hugh Brewster? It's only 48p, with lots of illustrations from Sargent's work. It tells the story of the painting through the eyes of Kate Millet, one of the children who posed for the painting.
Thanks Love these blogs and your adventures! I really loved Scotland when we were there during festival week. Saw the Tatoo and remember thinking "This is like being at the Superbowl!" Stay well and keep on traveling and writing!
Inspector Morse Hi Carolyn, very nice blog, informative and so nice to have a first-person account of such wonderful and well-known places. I'm a devotee of BBC mysteries and dramas, have watched Inspector Morse for years. You might enjoy watching them now that you've been there. My granddaughter Julia played Alice in her middle school's production of "Alice in Wonderland" this past winter; I'll have to tell her there was a real Alice and how the stories came about. Thanks for sharing your adventures! Pat
When the artist speaks one must listen Isn't it a joy when an artist painting speaks to you and you cannot walk away. The joy is difficult to explain. An unexpected gift. I'm glad you finally saw it at The Tate. And....the kindness of people. How wonderful that your students mother sent you the poster. The world is a good place.
Lost, but found! I was so glad to read that you found your money belt (even though you'd made peace with the loss). I'm going to steal that 'everything balances out' saying :)
We have the same plan...! ...to travel through Asia and the 'harder' countries first and leave Britain, Canada and the US until later. Merry Jo has been talking about your blogs, and I look forward to following your adventures of feeding the rat. Safe travels. :)
Drama and bliss Your first days of this trip are quite dramatic!!! I am so glad you had the wonderful experience with your favored art at the Tate. I remember even today, gazing so contentedly at a small painting in a small Spanish museum in the 1980's. I had never seen it before but it was an oasis of peace and beauty amidst the fracas of group travel on that trip.
