Geo: 59.4447, 8.01169I want to get going this morning. We have scheduled stops to make. Our mission is just to get about half the way back towards Copenhagen today and finish tomorrow, returning our car to the rental agency by 4pm. Of course, I can't let the free breakfast go so we have our meal first and then leave Aurland. Our journey starts by taking us through the famed Laerdal Tunnel. It's a 25k long, the longest road tunnel in the world, connecting the villages of Lærdal and Aurland. To set the records straight, Laerdal Tunnel may be the longest “road” tunnel but the longest transportation tunnel is the Gotthard Base Tunnel in Switzerland at 57 km, however it's used only by trains. One of the challenges faced by the engineers was how to keep drivers ... read more

Geo: 60.9036, 7.20172We sleep pretty good throughout the night. A slight cough seems to be the only trace left from my sickness. I'll test it today as we will be out from 9-6. We try out the free breakfast at 8am. It's fine for me since I don't eat much for breakfast; cereal, fruit, juice and coffee and I'm good. Karen, being more adventurous, tries the herring, goat cheese, warm rye bread with cranberry jam in addition to her regular favorites. Arriving at the Flam Railroad about 9, we hang out around the gift shop waiting for the train. While we're waiting for the train, here is some info on it. The Flåm Railway is the steepest adhesion railway on standard gauge tracks in the world, with a variation in altitude of 2550'. The line twists ... read more

Geo: 60.9036, 7.20172We take our time getting up and dressed this morning. Breakfast is served until 11am and we arrive there at 10. It's good but honestly, none of these breakfast buffets can compare with the ones we had in Germany two years ago. Three different kinds of eggs, many cereals, breads and oatmeal, fish, yogurt, lunch meats, and much more were the norm there. Here, it's much more basic. That's OK. After last night's $50 meal, this free breakfast is great. We finish our food and return to our room where I lie in bed, contemplating today's drive into the unknown. At noon, we grab our things and make our way, in the rain, to the parking garage. This time I have a ticket. There's a sign on the ticket machine but it still appears ... read more

Geo: 60.3881, 5.33185I awake at the B&B around 8am. Our trip to Bergen from here is 2:15 minutes but we already know how that usually goes. We have a boat trip planned for 2:30pm up the fjords for 3 hours and, you know, Mom likes boats. She will like this leisurely cruise. Here's the description of our boat trip to Mostraumen direct from the Internet: "Experience the fjords, mountains and waterfalls – all year round! The cruise starts from Zachariasbryggen, right next to the well-known Fish Market in Bergen. On the way from Bergen you will have a good view of the famous Bryggen, the old city of Bergen along with the rest of Bergen's harbor basin. Furthermore, we sail under Nordhordalandsbrua and on the Osterfjord. When we approach Mostraumen the fjord gets more narrow and ... read more

Geo: 60.4675, 7.07192After our free breakfast, we leave our cottage and decide to stop by the Krossobanen for a ride up the mountain. It's not part of my original plan but now we have no plan so we take the tram up to the top and back. Completed in 1928, Krossobanen was the first cable car in Northern Europe and rises about 1600' above the valley. Lots of backpackers are on the way up with us looking to hike further into the mountains. It's raining pretty hard and the view up here, tempered by the fog, clouds and rain, is not the best but we take photos anyway. Back down below, we set the GPS to our next destination, Eidjford. It's says it's about 3 1/2 hours but takes us much longer. The times given on ... read more

Geo: 59.879, 8.59134We're up and ready to go at by 9am. We grab our free breakfast which is, well, free and very good. My plan for today was to take the Oslo sightseeing boat around Oslo harbor and fjords in the morning but, nervous about traveling today, we skip it and head out directly to the parking garage. Everyone tells me I have a problem since I don't have a parking ticket. A customer at the machine says the same. There is no attendant. Noticing a call button, I push. A lady comes on in Danish but quickly switches to English while listening to my story. No worries, she says. It will figure it out as long as you use the same card to check out with. There is no ticket. Oh, the stress. We follow ... read more

Geo: 59.9144, 10.7405Up at 6:30 this morning, last minute preparations are made to leave the Zuiderdam today and begin our next phase of our journey, traveling on our own for the 10 days that separate our two cruises. In the past the train has always served as our means of transportation but this time it just wasn't practical. The train doesn't go to the places we want to see so, against my better judgment, I arranged for a car for 8 days followed by just two days on the train. Since we don't have any plans this morning, we chose a late exit from the ship. An announcement notifies us that it's our turn to leave comes about 9am and, with relative ease, we walk off the ship, scanning our ID cards for the last time ... read more

Geo: 56.0469, 12.6953I wake up around 4am and, prior to my bathroom visit, I peek out the window shades to monitor our progress. It's zero. We're still sitting in the same place. I thought we were leaving at 2am. Oh well. Back to sleep. The Captain awakens us at 6:30am with an announcement. The weather was still bad at 2am and their next opportunity to leave the port per the harbor pilot was 6am. Leaving that late made it impossible to stop in Helsingborg so we were making way directly to Copenhagen. We had reserved a walking tour of Helsingborg through HAL but, of course, that was done. Today will be another unscheduled sea day. Mom likes that but I would rather see something besides the inside of the ship. Both Helsinki and Helsingborg have been ... read more

Geo: 57.697, 11.9864We have no reservations for any activities here in Gothenburg, Sweden. I would like to take the canal boat through the city but made no arrangements previously because I had to pick a specific time to board which I couldn't do. We'll just take the free shuttle bus offered by HAL into the city and make our way to the canal boat. I know where it docks. The other thing was the old town shopping area but we'll have to see where the shuttle drops us. Gothenburg is the second largest city in Sweden, next to Stockholm. We take our time with breakfast to let all the people go first, thereby avoiding the crowd. Having docked around 8am, we disembark around 10am only to find a huge line outside waiting for the bus. My ... read more

Geo: 54.3227, 10.1359Today we have a Holland America tour to the Holstein Switzerland area of Germany including the town of Eutin, a visit to a local schnapps distillery, a German lunch and finishing up with a five lakes boat ride. It all starts at 10am when we board our bus at the pier. We had breakfast earlier and I had tried unsuccessfully once more to send out blogs on the ship's Internet. Now we are in the city of Kiel, Germany. Kiel is a port city in Northern Germany on the Baltic Sea near the end of the Kiel Canal. A large portion of the city was destroyed during WWII. Most tourists arriving here by ferry or cruise ship continue on to Hamburg or Lubeck and few stay in Kiel. The biggest thing in this area ... read more
