Geo: 44.6462, -63.5739We have an excursion planned for today. Joining us will be the two Traveling Sues and Joni and her husband. All of us are Cruise Critic members with Joni actually making the arrangements for all of us. After breakfast, we make our way forward for disembarkation at 8am. Something happens and we're delayed for about 15 minutes. We exit the gangway and meet Alphonse, holding a sign that says "Joni". That must be us. Within a few minutes all of us are here and Alphonse directs us to his van. As we leave the pier, his first comments are of the Halifax explosion of 1917. We were familiar with this catastrophe through Barbara's presentation yesterday. The Halifax Explosion occurred when a Belgian relief vessel and a French munitions carrier collided in Halifax Harbor during ... read more

Geo: 45.2657, -57.2577Today we are somewhere in between St. Johns and Halifax. It's another sea day which Mom has come to love. She likes getting up when she feels like it, getting a leisurely breakfast and wandering around the ship, finally picking a nesting place to sit and relax or read a book. There's a nice library, computer room and lots of bars on board where you can just relax and do what you want. When blogging, I prefer to go to a public area and people watch while writing or downloading as opposed to sitting in solitude in our stateroom. After breakfast, we head to the theater to hear a lecture about the Vikings:The North Atlantic Voyages. We learn about the the westward voyages of the Vikings, the settlement of Scotland, the Faeroe Islands and Iceland. ... read more

Geo: 47.5767, -52.7011We're not scheduled to arrive in St John's until noon and we dock right at the pier in town. There's no rush getting off today so after breakfast, I work on the blog and we let those in a big hurry exit the ship first. When the rush is over, we leisurely disembark our ship and walk into town. There's not much here. I looks to us like any other small city. We walk two block into town, turn right two blocks, another right and we're back at the ship. Mom checked about a few shops but there's not much to see there. We hear of a pathway that leads to Signal Hill, the location where Marconi sent the first transatlantic wireless signal but, seeing the location far up on a hill quite some ... read more

Geo: 54.8438, -48.3368It's another relaxing sea day. I don't remember much about this day, not because I was drunk or asleep all day. I didn't write anything because I was busing finishing up the previous days in our blog. Yes, I was behind and needed to catch up. Since today was just a "sea day", I concentrated on cleaning up earlier posts, adding pictures and writing details missed in a few entries to prepare for sending. Nevertheless, we must of done something. After breakfast, we went to a lecture at 11am. The subject concerned our next two stops in Canada, St.John's and Halifax. Barbara was the lecturer and her presentations are always very interesting. I can't comment on our lunch but I can guarantee we ate something. From the photos, it was probably pork. We attended the ... read more

Geo: 60.1453, -45.2571We are in no rush to go ashore today as we have ample time to see this small town. I guess we didn't learn much from yesterday's mishap of arriving too late. It's no coincidence that Nanortalik, Greenland's southernmost town founded in 1797, means the "place of bears". In Nanortalik polar bears sometimes pass by on the field ice from East Greenland in the spring. Of course, there's a main street in Nanortalik which is the focus of activity in the town of 1300. We had no problem finding it since it's the first street we came to when exiting the wharf. We walked down to the supermarket to visit the local “board”, where fishermen and hunters sell the day's catch. As usual, we arrived a little too late to see anything of interest ... read more

Geo: 60.7201, -46.0268We arrive in Qaqortoq, Greenland, at 8am to a beautiful blue sky, the first we've seen in many weeks. A few icebergs are floating in the harbor, nothing huge but they're still interesting. The last time we saw them was in Alaska in 2011. We're here until 4:30pm and the cruise director suggests to everyone that we take our time to get ashore. "Avoid the initial rush", he says. We have a leisurely breakfast, then around 9:30 we report to the theater to get our tender tickets. Unfortunately, there's a long wait, about 30 minutes, to get aboard a tender going to town. We wait, listening to the numbers as they call them out, slowly working their way toward #5. Finally we hear, "Blue 5", and off we go. The ride through the harbor ... read more

Geo: 61.2428, -41.5253Ahh. An extra hour of sleep this morning. We are cruising into the Prince Christian Sound which will take us from the North Atlantic to the Labrador Sea on the west coast of Greenland. It's a fjord that cuts between the southern tip of Greenland and islands south of Greenland. It is full of waterfalls, narrow waterways passing between tall mountains whose sheer cliffs rise thousands of feet from sea level to above the clouds, glaciers calving into the sea and icebergs floating along with our ship. We are scheduled to enter the sound around 9am and we're told that there's lots of things to see while we cruise. It will take all day to go through. We're up at the Lido for breakfast looking for a seat but it's packed. There is someone ... read more

Geo: 64.028, -35.5487Today is a sea day and we have no planned activities. Well, not exactly. I want to go to a lecture on Greenland at 10am, Karen has laundry to do, we have a Mariner's luncheon at 1pm and our passports need to be picked up at 3:30pm. Add to that breakfast, lunch, gala dinner and the 8pm show and we actually have a pretty busy day ahead of us. It's breakfast as usual but I'm carrying my IPad with me all day so I can use any free time to catch up on my blog. Karen goes back to the room to bag up the dirty laundry while I head to the lecture. She has conceded that paying $20 for a bag of clothes to be professionally cleaned is easier than going to the ... read more

Europe » Iceland July 10th 2016

Geo: 64.1353, -21.8952Today is our second day in Reykjavik and we are touring the southern part of Iceland. We had made no plans for the day. Karen didn't want to go into the Blue Lagoon, a heated pool in Reykjavik noted for its healing qualities and other tours we had considered would not be completed before our departure time of 4:30pm. I figured we would just either hang out on the boat or take a three hour tour of the city by bus. A couple of days ago, one of our travelers from Cruise Critic found a van tour that would return us in time so, at the last minute, we signed up. We meet on deck 3 at 6:45am. There are 7 of us. Three couples and a single school teacher. Our driver tells us ... read more

Geo: 64.1353, -21.8952Today we will be on a different tour than most of our fellow passengers. I stepped out of my comfort zone a little when I booked it. It's the same "Golden Circle" tour that most of the local companies and Holland America offer with the addition of a snowmobiling adventure on a glacier. There's no way a big tour bus is going to make it up to the glacier for snowmobiling so we will be traveling in a monster truck. Yes, a big four-wheel drive can with huge tires. I think it's neat and will add some excitement to our travel itinerary. I just Mom will agree and is up to it. I read to her the web site's description including the snowmobile part and she gave me the thumbs up. She wants to ... read more
