Shocker You were shocked? C'mon...it had been 11 months. Shocked would have been if I came back after 2 weeks. But yes, I'm back.
And you mean to say you didn't keep up religiously with each entry? You have things to do other than read my stories? I'm hurt. Deeply. Maybe I'll just have to leave again...
Yea. Welcome back. Marc, I am in Birmingham, AL. (nothing compared to your adventures of course) on Sat 3/15/08 marking time because all flights home were full, dang...
I did not keep up with every one of your blogs because of being busy, but had time today and found the Kili ascent facinating, especially with your Dad. Way to go Dad!!!
Hitting the next blog button, I was SHOCKED to see your heading home, but can understand. You will be back before you see this entry. Congrats. Few folks have seen what you've seen, did what you did. Including me. But I still feel a little kinship.
Hope we cross paths again.
Marty Plecki.
recommendation I love reading your blog. I too returned from Nepal last October, having hiked the Everest route to EBC. Can you recommend a good company to use for climbing mt. kili? I'd really appreciate the info.
Thank you!

Well, I guess this means my vicarious adventure comes to an end as well. I've SO enjoyed the blogs of the last year. Good luck with the new adjustment! Chicago might have the oddest clash of cultures you've seen in quite some time!!! If you get the urge to travel again...make a journey out to the Tetons!
blown away... Marc....I can't tell you how blown away I have been when reading all of your entries about your trip. Truly amazing! Even though you feel at times that your thoughts are all over the place, know that I'm pretty sure they can be appreciated by more then just me. It gives me a more real feel as to what each place is like. I have a friend who spent a few months in India last summer. It has been interesting to me to read your comments from this blog and relate parts of them to the conversations I used to have with him while he was there. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences with all of us. Reading your posts have reminded me of how much I desire to travel....so until that becomes a possibility, I appreciate being able to see parts of it through your pics and learn of the places through your words.
today is a sad day. 1 year ago today we arrived in India on the first day of our trip, so i enjoyed your blog more than usual. My mantra for india... " for any words you can think of to describe India, the opposite is always true". had a great time there and seems like you are too! Happy days!
It does indeed sell. I guess I wasn't completely clear about that one. But the only reason people go to Khajuraho is for these temple carvings...many of which are kamasutra...various explicit sexual positions. So...the 1000 year old bizarre sexual temple carvings sell Khajuraho to travelers.
"Sex sells??" Hey good stuff on your time in India. One of the pastors at Kensington (the 'mega church' I attend here in the Detroit area) has been to India several times and always shares how affected he is each time by the poverty, disorganization and general sensory overload. So what's with the 'sex sells' title on one of your blog sections? Did I miss something? Who was selling and who was buying??
PS Denial is the first stage...no need to explain your non-conformist attitude, just realize that the nail that sticks out gets hammed down (or pays more at the toll) ;)...swinging a month could be tough, maybe after MOT goes under I'll have that kind of time...I'll ping you on the week..."I did it like this, I did it like that, I did it with a whiffle ball bat!"
Another Narendra? Hey Nes! Or is it Mahendra now? :) lol
I especially enjoyed this blog. Really makes you feel like your in the village and scarily similar to the village I lived in as a child.
Glad you decided to go off the beaten path and journey into real Nepal.
Hope you enjoy the rest of your travels,
-Pers... :)
PPPPPPPPPPPS You nut....I understand the convention for multiple post scripts. I'll try to better explain in the future when I choose to not conform. As for saving the trek until you could join me...I'll gladly come back to Nepal in the future with you to trek when we both can find a month off from work...there's a lotta trekking to be done.
PS - Let's discuss your week.
PS2 - I thought I made it clear that I don't actually want to be Canadian...it was just a drastic measure taken in the heat of an arguement with a thug. You and Canada will have to give up the dream of a Canadian Marc. Sorry.
Wish I was there... I wish you could have saved the trek for a time when I could have joined you! I may have a spare week soon, so we can discuss that later. p.s. when you add post scripts, it's p.p.s, p.p.p.s and so on...again, if you want to be Canadian, we need to work on your English!
The Real Canadian responds... In my book, you're an honorary Canadian. If you had moved to Toronto rather than me moving to Chicago, I think you would have fit right in! :)
You know I'm a wimp so it wouldn't have been much different from those other Canadians. Of course, I probably wouldn't have hired a porter either, which I think put "cheap" right out the window for you! :)
Either way, I'm honoured (you need to start learning to spell in Canadian as well) that you would adopt my home country to try and get out of a tight jam. Next time, you can take my expired passport. ;)
There's always a way back We do still have an open headcount requisition to replace you. If you want, I'm sure Glenn would be happy to hire you back on as your own replacement. With a pay cut, of course...
Hope loves you too After explaining to Hope you missed Chipotle more than you missed her, she said "I love food. I love Marc." At least you guys are on the same page there. I am sure she would rank you right after Culver's of things she missed. Not that we would take her away from Culver's.
I left Chicago heading west in the beginning of April '07 and continued going west until March 1st, 2008 when I returned to Chicago having confirmed that the world is indeed round.
The stops along the way - Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Nepal, India, and Tanzania.
As of March, 2008, I retired my backpack and posted my final entry about this journey. All the entries are still there for your reading enjoyment. Remember, the entries are shown newest to oldest.
Cheers!

Wow, what a trip!
Great stuff, Marc. Thanks for sharing. Again, for those of us who will never go, your mini travel-log of Africa was awesome, thanks!
