SPECTACULAR! SPECTACULAR!! Well, just when I thought my time in China proper couldn't be topped, along came the last 48 hours on the Quinghai-Tibet railway from Beijing to Lhasa across the Tibetan plateau - the Rooftop of the World. So far Tibet has been staggering!!! Albiet it was a little grueling and completely disgusting at times I wouldn't have missed it for the world! First a bit of information about this engineering marvel. 86% of the line is above 4000 metres altitude, half of the track lies on permafrost requiring a cooling system of pipes deep in the ground to to keep it frozen year round. There are 160 km of bridges and elevate track (which make for great viewing) and seven tunnels including the world's highest. It cost $4.1 Billion US to construct which is greater ... read more

Hello: After a fantastic, but smog laiden week in Beijing, I'm off to the train station to board the 48 hour train ride to Lhasa, Tibet. This may be my last chance at an internet connection for at least a couple of days. I'm sure the monks in Lhasa will have wifi!! I hope all is well. Enjoy your turkey dinners!!! As much as I love the food adventures here, I'm really missing my full Thanksgiving dinner. Think of me as you enjoy. I will send an update as soon as I am able!! Jeff... read more

Neihow! Greetings from Chongshou. Sorry for the delay in emailing but I have been in some pretty remote spots lately. I'm sitting in a sweltering, stuffy internet cafe in Chongshou having just arrived here this morning. To backtrack, we arrived in cosmopolitan Chengdu and enjoyed the sites and especially the Szechuan Hot pot meals (although I declined the alcohol pickled snakes in the jars in the front window. The hot pots were however Burn-your-mouth-off good. From Chengdu we were off to spend some quality time with the Pandas at the sanctuary. Helping to harvest their meals from the Bambu forest and then of course the inevitable cleanup. The are so gentle and expressive. I really enjoyed spending time with these rare creature. Even got to hold some of the new borns in the nursery. From Chengdu ... read more

Greetings: My apologies for not posting sooner but it has literally been a whirlwind since I arrived. Non-stop day after day of brilliant discoveries and experiences. Unfortunately wifi is virtually non-existant here. There are NO internet cafes. But now I am in the small town of Xian (six million constitutes a small city here.) and I have wifi in the lobby of the HNA Business Hotel in downtown Xian. I still am not able to upload photos to my blog but will try get that sorted out when I get back to Beijing and have some time to work on it. (I return from Hong Kong via Shanghai to Beijing on October 2 after a couple of days in Hong Kong) I'll back up and go over the highlight of my first few days in Beijing. ... read more

Hello all from Beijing!!! I finally found wifi!! A bit of a communications issue. No internet in the rooom at the hotel but wifi in the lobby, so here I am!! Here's the trip so far. I will download some of my photos tonight and post them to my blog tomorrow. I hope all is well. Friday, September 09, 2011 - 11:00 PM Well, I made it safely in Beijing. After a smooth and relatively painless flight from Vancouver, 11 hours, a few bad movies, and lots of crosswords later we touched down in the collosal Beijing airport. The upgrade to the exit row was well worthwhile, heaps of leg room. Slowly got through customs, baggage claim and into the huge line for a taxi and I was off on the massive freeway system to downtown ... read more
