We open the shutter blinds of our hotel room to reveal an idealic island paradise. A sprawling pool before a palm-tree lined cove. In true Tight Arse Tours style I warn the kids "The breakfast is included with our room. Let's make the most of the buffet - there is no such thing as lunch anymore!" They get that I'm half-joking and smash waffles, pancakes, french toast and pastries. I think I had 4-5 eggs and a poor attempt at Canadian Pancakes. Turkey bacon just doesn't cut it! And one day it's called Turkey bacon and the next it's called Beef bacon. What the hell is that stuff anyway? We explore the many pools on offer and struggle to relax. The kids keep asking "what are we doing next?" and Jules is feeling anxious with nothing ... read more

Up early and packed very quickly for our 9 am departure. We sit around the big beautiul wodden table and share our last breakfast in Yangon. With time to kill, Jules and I wander down Inya Rd to check out the street stalls we've driven by in the taxi or Dave's and Alex's 4X4 everyday. The kids know, by the way I ask, that they should come with us for one last adventure. They've seen enough and the draw of a puppy and Dave's as yet unused games console is too strong. It was fun, just Jules and I investigating a local market - just like old times. The market sells fresh fruit and flowers and a variety of other bits and pieces. Each rose is individually wrapped in netting like a paw paw at a ... read more

We made it back to the sanctuary and slept like babies. Deaks must have picked up on the parental anxiety in the taxi from Popa to Bagan - he said he saw the driver (Sleepy Dwarf) 5 times at the airport. All the parents were watching Sleepy's eyelids and Deaks would have had a good veiw throught the rearveiw mirror, and that face will be burned in all our memories for some time. There's still a palpable feeling of relief that we survived that ride. But today is our last day in Yangon. And like a heat-seeking credit card, Jules has her sights set firmly on the artwork we saw earlier in the week. My only hope is for a cheaper tourist print at the Bogyoke Aung Sun Markets. Over 2000 stalls in one colonial building, ... read more

A week in Myanmar and I'm yet to try the mohinga for breakfast. I'm more an eggs and bacon guy than a fishy onion noodle soup kinda guy in the mornings. Smashed a socialy unacceptable number of choc croissants at break fast today and Milla matched me one-for-one. I'm so proud of my girl. Had to fuel up for our trek down the mountain and it is hard to leave this veiw. Cool breeze, blue skies and a golden temple on the mount. Not too shabby. We follow a path from the resort and weave through trees and vines. We cross a tiny road and dodge the odd motorbike heading up the hill. Spiderwebs glisten amongst the trees and these unusual funnel webs litter the side of the path. It's fairly steep in parts and is ... read more

The action packed days, late nights and early starts are starting to take a toll on the kids - they are looking pretty tired but still behaving like champions. Deaks said he feels like a sponge trying to take it all in. A ninja sponge that is. But, we have only have one morning left in Bagan and it's New Years Eve. What does that spell? SUNRISE! Up you get, the taxi will be here at 6. Today we head for the eastern side of Bagan. Aiming to get bewtween the sun and the majority of the temples and the balloons. We climb (or should I say catch an elevator to the 11th floor) a purpose built tower and have the sun at our backs. We are closer to the airport at Nyaung U than Old ... read more

Today was one of those "pinch yourself" days. One of those days when you feel like you've created lifetime memories. Bagan is brilliant! It didn't start well when we woke before the sun rose in order to experience a Bagan sunrise and while getting ourselves organised, Milla locked the room key in the room safe and set a pass code unknown to all. But it didn't stop us, we had a 6.30 deadline and a pagoda to climb. Shwesandaw Pagoda was erected in 1057 and is a steep bugger! It has a spectacular view across the Bagan plains and the 50 other people atop the pagoda can't detract from the magical moment we shared this morning. As the sun rises, 20 odd hot air balloons rise and drift across the sky and amongst the dramatic silhouetes ... read more

We had a few hours before our flight to Bagan departed. Or should I say flights? How was I to know that Bagan is only 1 hour from Yangon when I was booking these flights. It's 8 hours from Brisbane to Singapore and 3 hours seemed reasonable at the time! And what better way to see a little more of the country than to take a milk run flight with 3 stops in under 3 hours? Deaks was happy - three flights equals three sprites. But more on that later. We had the morning to make the most of and headed to The People's Park for a shady stroll and some serenity. People's park is across the road from Shwedagon Pagoda and the gilded stupa is an ominous presence beyond the lush green trees shading the ... read more

Another day, another taxi-ride tightrope. Today I made an audible "whoah whoah whoah!". I don't want to harp on about the mayhem of the roads, but it is a key part of the travel experience. After your border control experience, it's your first real interaction with a country. Mum and Dad still talk about our taxi-ride from the airport when we took them to Budapest airport. This Hungarian guy had obviously just been watching the 2004 Hungarian GP and was driving like a lunatic. He was Morgan Freeman in Driving Miss Daisy, compared to these burmese commuters. Every car, bus and bike on these Yangon roads is driving like Jason Bourne in The Bourne Identity. My audible plea came as we entered a 6-9 lane "motorway" and almost got T-boned on the passengers side crossing the ... read more

The contrast between Singapore and Yangon could not be greater. The cultivated calm and manicured order of Singapore is replaced by the kaos of Yangon. Once we all finally calmed down and got to sleep (I'm looking at you Milla), the stopover worked a treat and the Crown Plaza had a great view of all the planes landing at Changi Terminal 3, with perfectly catered room service - if I don't say so myself. But we were up early. Was it 6 am, was it 8 am or was it 4.30 am? I don't know, but it was too early for a hotel breakfast! We transit to Terminal 1 with aplomb and check in/bag drop like pros. Now for some breakfast. Subway hit the spot for Deaks and Jules and buttered toast got Milla over the ... read more

The Boxing Day flight might have caused an abridged Readers Digest Christmas, but the usual travel stress and queuing was non-existent. The Uber to the airport was traffic free, the bag drop and check-in was swift and airport security and immigration went smoothly. We avoided the body scanners, which they claim to be "random". But the two travellers selected while we were being processed were quite fit looking young ladies. Interestingly, the border patrol officer making the random selections wasn't a bloke though. She was a short haired burly broad with a keen eye. Might have been under instructions from her colleagues to gather some good sorts for the training database. We breezed through with time to kill and I may have inadvertently shoplifted a headphone jack from the duty free shop. Stashing the passports away ... read more
