July 16 - 17 (please note, there are two pages here of pics, and hopefully some video soon!) Ever read Walker Percy's thoughts on the Grand Canyon? Take a look and tell us what YOU think. Is it possible to have an authentic experience of The Grand Canyon? http://www.law.umkc.edu/faculty/projects/ftrials/ASCEND/ascentwpercy.html Percy had it right when he said you might have to step off the beaten track, or you might have to get the Grand Canyon to yourself to really know the Grand Canyon. We were lucky to find a quiet, empty-of-people-trail to step back from the grand views and relax as quiet participants inside the canyon walls, affording us the best, truest experience of the Grand Canyon. At the same time, Percy might have underestimated the removal that this modern generation has from the signage baggage of ... read more

July 14 Our last in day in Utah was spent in the Canyonlands State Park area. Our first stop was Newspaper Rock, a 200 foot slab of black slick rock covered with petroglyph graffiti: Native American (dating begins 1,500 years ago) as well as more modern Anglo graffiti ... of which Juan Rambo remarked we should consider aliens as possible inspiration. Driving through the park in and of itself was amazing. The canyons and mesas are only a preamble of the Grand Canyon which will be seven to eight times the size of the images you see here. We split the rest of our day visiting two Native American ruins in Canyonlands. The first was a simple hike to an old Puebloan granary and a loop hike to the cave dwelling that had lately sheltered roughneck ... read more

July 13 10:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Juan Rambo negotiated discount rental of an 11-footer so that Jenny Karankawa, Yunkyard and I could whet our rapid appetites on the Moab Daily float. The Daily is a popular 12-13 mile day raft and the views along it have been made famous in the movies of John Wayne to Indiana Jones. The rapids on this stretch of the Colorado River average from I-III. The river is wide with a sprinkling of sandy beaches for picnic lunches and cool-down swims. Rambo also picked up two more raftees, the Moab Dog Whisperer plus dog Saego. Now the expedition totaled four adults, one giant cooler of picnic goodness, and two adventure dogs (complete with adventure accessories aka doggie life-jackets). At Hiddle Bottom (mile 23) Karankawa took a good look at the ... read more

July 12-13 10:30 p.m. - 1:30 a.m. Last night Juan Rambo took us to hunt for the moon up Bootlegger Canyon (about 15 miles outside of Moab). Say what you want to about the red rock countryside, but the night sky out here would blow away even the most ardent urban dweller. The dome of millions of stars stretched infinitely above the black silhouettes of cliffs. Using cairns, J Rambo led us 440 feet up 'slick stone' in the dark. Wolf spider eyes shined like diamond dust (…or like Edward Cullen/Generalissimo’s QofD) in the beams of our headlamps (thank you, Tommy K. and Scout!). Yunkyard corralled us all together, making sure we kept up. About a mile and a half in, J Rambo brought us to the Corona Arch (http://www.blm.gov/ut/st/en/fo/moab/recreation/hiking_trails/corona_arch_trail.html). The Navajo sandstone arch extends more ... read more

They say a journey is only as good as its guide. On July 12, the first day of Generalissimo and Jenny Karankawa’s 24-day trek, the duo fell into the hands of Juan Rambo. Juan Rambo is one with the Utah wilds, and if you thought your father was thrifty, try the wilderness quest contingent. J Rambo met us at the Grand Junction, CO, airport in his house. Yes, J Rambo likes to keep things on the move in his red pick-up. The bed of the truck has been built split-level—downstairs for storage, upstairs for J Rambo’s trusty companion Yunkyard. We settled in for some lunch at the Main Street Café in Grand Junction, where we all drank too much coffee and Juan Rambo also ordered up a chicken fried steak with eggs and a butterscotch malt. ... read more
