How busy can a place possibly be?!? That's the first thing i thought when I saw the entrance tot the Forbidden City. It was crawling with people. Everywhere. When we entered the city it was just as crowded...i don't think i ever saw that many people in one place. But back to the City. It is so amazingly huge. The buildings are so tall and wide, the courtyards so big (and without trees because of the Emperors paranoia). The Forbidden city is build on 15 crossed layers laid in seven layers lengthwise and eight layers crosswise, so no one could dig their way in. Parts of the Forbidden City are already renovated, so you can see the beautiful bright colors it once was in. Still the most impressive building is the Hall of Supreme Harmony, build ... read more

It was 6.00am when we had to get up. The trip to the wall took about 2 hours. We went to the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall. The way up was by cable car, from there on we could go up the wall and start walking. It was a beautiful sight. Not as green as i remember in July, but with the mountains full of the first green and a lot of blossoms. The view is indescribable. The Wall, so huge, still standing as a sort of stone snake throughout the landscape. One of the biggest building projects ever, and has the right to be called one of the seven World Wonders. It was a bit windy up there, but with the sun it was good weather overall. Even though it wasn't really steep, it ... read more

We landed in Beijing at 8.35 am Sunday morning. It was a six hour time difference, and we didn't sleep much in the plane. After the whole blabla of passport controls, visa checks and luggage we proceeded the exit. It was pretty gray outside, and a bit colder then expected (17 or 18 degrees Celcius). The rooms weren't ready yet so we did a sightseeing tour through Beijing. I've been there in 2006, before the Olympics, and i have to say not much seemed very different when we were driving through the city. Of course there were even more buildings, very high buildings, but also a lot of reconstruction/renovation, especially the Hutong areas. There were a lot of cars and motorcycles too, and everything just drove from left to right and back...it was so weird. Like ... read more

Day 6 Today we got ready to go to the Summer Palace. Wake-up call was early as usual. When we entered the Summer Palace (it was about half an hour driving) it was very impressive to see. First thing we saw was a square with a lot of trees. Through the whole summer palace everything was green. A lot of trees and plants there, very soothing. Add in the typical (well it sounded typical to me) chinese music and it's perfect. First we saw 3 statues , a guardian, a dragon (symbol for emperor) and a phoenix (symbol for empress). After that we went to the Garden of Harmonious Interest. Weird name maybe but a truly beautiful place. It's quiet enough to just walk or sit in a corner and read a bit, or just enjoying ... read more

Day 4 Today we started with a riksja-tour through the Hutongs, the old neigbourhoods. Two in each riksja cart. It was fun to get a tour like that. First stop was the Drum-tower. It was really big, but when the guide said the stairs we're good practice for the Great Wall, which we would visit the next day, everyone was a little bit concerned.... But about the drum-tower, we saw the drum-ceremony, which was ok. Nice to see it once. After that we had some free time to take pictures of the view and buy cards or souvenirs they sold there. After that we went to a small shopping street. I bought a wooden dragon there. Really pretty and very glad I bought it. The whole bargaining thing was getting better everytime I tried it. And ... read more

The idea to book a holiday (it's been 5 years since my last one), came in september 2005. So after a few months of looking i decided to book a single trip. Most of my friends wanted to go with their boyfriends or just simply didn't want to go any further then Spain. I finally made the decision in december. It was a group of 14 people, all single, 4 guys/men and 10 girls/women. We had a great group. We met each other on Schiphol (Amsterdam Airport). After that we had a 2 hour flight to Helsinki, 2 hours of waiting, and a flight of 7 hours and 15 minutes to Beijing, China. There is a +6 hour difference from the Netherlands to China. With the flight times it was pretty horrible. We landed on Beijing ... read more
