10th Feb 14. We headed to Krabi for 3 nights - and of course we were staying in the accommodation booked for us which were little bungalows, a 5 minute walk from the beach but miles from the town/nightlife. Arriving there we were skeptical of our hotel but the bungalows were nice, clean and big. The only problem with all these hotels were that they weren't sociable or anything and we didn't meet any other travellers AT ALL. Not exactly what we wanted being two 18 year olds, we felt like 40 year olds on a family holiday in the places we were staying, so frustrating. Krabi was average as were the nights out - we found ourselves playing connect 4 in a bar with two strangers on our last night, WILD. Chang bar was probably ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Phi Phi Don June 20th 2014

After our first LONG bus journey on a sleeper bus (where we were sat right at the back below the violent air con all night) and a short boat ride, we arrived in Koh Phi Phi. Seeing as we got ripped off and our whole Thailand trip planned for us, we had to stay in the accommodation booked for us, called something like 'Pong ping house', which I can only describe as looking like a drug den..it was tiny, had no windows and after waking up with blood on our pillows we discovered there were bed bugs too, YAY! In all honesty I wasn't bothered, I'm not one for luxury and frankly I was smashed each night I came in to sleep, and we hardly spent any of the day in there. The only positive was ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand June 20th 2014

Before arriving in Bangkok, we saw the news of shootings and grenade attacks in the capital because of the unrest and protests of the elections, so we were preparing ourselves to enter some kind of war zone but it was nothing of the sort. We arrived in Bangkok at about 10pm to extremely humid weather, which was horrible in a massive jumper and leggings! After searching the airport for our taxi driver, we finally found a tiny Thai man grinning and holding a sign saying 'Ella West', yes I'm basically a celebrity now . Unfortunately I also quickly came to the realisation that I couldn't take out money as I hadn't informed my bank of my travels, so obviously when I tried to take money out, they contacted the fraud squad, FANTASTIC start to the trip. ... read more

Before leaving me and Yasmin went up to Nottingham for the weekend staying at our friend's halls at Trent uni to meet all the other uni girls (from sixth form) to say bye and have a few last nights out! We had a wicked time and it did make me really excited for uni life, when i eventually go in September 2014, hopefully to Loughborough if I get my two A's in my retakes.. Saying goodbye to everyone in the office (Eon) where I worked for 6 months was emotional, I arrived to balloons and sweets on my desk with a massive 'Good Luck' banner sprawled across my PC. They all chipped in and got me a St Christopher necklace for good luck on my travels and £50, I welled up, which is so unlike me ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England June 19th 2014

I've already finished my trip but I decided to start this blog so that I could remember because even now, 2 months after returning, my memories are becoming hazy! I also thought it'd be nice to share my experiences as they were all completely new to me. I'm Ella, 19 years old (18 when I started my trip) from a small, mudane town in England. I took a 'gap yah' after finishing my A levels (English Lit, Media, Biology and Art and textiles) in June 2013 with the average grades of BBC. I always knew I wanted to take a gap year and travel so I never applied for uni. Whilst my friends were doing their UCAS, I was purely thinking of travelling and luckily my best friend, Yasmin, also wanted to take a gap year..so ... read more
