Mt. Wilson Driving through the deserted lush Mt.Wilson rain forest, just 120 km northwest of Sydney of Route 40, I fall madly in love with this mountain. Mt. Wilson is a mountain range that spans for five kilometers north of the World Heritage Blue Mountains National Park. The rich volcanic basalt soil makes this region a perfect location for many natural-appearing large scale English gardens. Many not only feature symmetrical shrubberies with graveled walks, tree-lined plantations, and vibrant and contrast perennial blooms but also grottoes, temples, tea-houses, belvederes, pavilions, sham ruins, bridges, and statues. The Australia's unique tall eucalyptus trees create continuous canopy over the stringing zigzags, sweeping bends, and straights. It is summer time and the temperature is mild and perfect for Cabrio driving. There are not much of drastic elevation changes or hairpins... read more

Florence Visiting Tuscany would not be complete without exploring Florence. Founded by Julius Caesar in 59 BC, Florence was the epicenter of Renaissance movement in 1500's. It is a place where arts, architectures, and cultures come to meet you. Florence's fascinating sights, brimming ambiance, and ambrosial smells give any visitor sensory overload. The relatively compact old town, separated from the modern town by the medieval walls, hosts many gigantic grandiose monuments, churches, and buildings that ooze gripping adventures and romances, victories and defeats. The Duomo, domed Santa Maria del Fiore cathedral, was the best place to start. We then spirally moved outward to absorb the historical glories and sorrows this place had endured. Bartolomeo Ammanati's Marble Fountain of Neptune in Piazza della Signoria is a remarkable engineering masterpiece. Built in mid 15t... read more

Siena Driving towards Siena, I discovered a nifty feature. When I crossed the middle lane without turning my turn signal on, the departure lane warning system vibrated the steering wheel. It vibrated like my mobile phone. In California, during my regular commute, I witnessed other drivers brushing teeth, putting make up, reading Wall Street Journal, and eating with chopsticks on the highways. Those people will welcome this feature. Piazza de Campo, the Siena's enormous bowl-shaped piazza, was the best place to relax and do nothing. There were not many things going on but at the same time there were. In relatively mellow afternoon, over a thousand visitors were sun bathing on the cobblestone piazza, eating at open-air restaurants, drinking coffees at espresso bars, and shopping at the stores lining the edges of the piazza. From a ... read more

SR 222 The morning sun did not shine on my face. The roasters did not wake me up. It was my intrusive alarm from my mobile phone that did it. This place was just too tranquil to do anything this early. But we were on a mission; to enjoy the driving vacation under the Tuscan sun. SR 222 goes through the wine region of Tuscany. No wonder the Italian loves to make sports cars. Roads like this are their source of inspiration. The mesmerizing rolling hills, the fast switch backs, and the occasional exhilarating hairpins are all can be found here with the postcard-like scenery. Imagine if you have been towing a two ton weight and then all of the sudden that weight disappears. All of the energy used to carry the enormous weight is now ... read more

Many people visit this Northern Italy region named Emilia-Romagna for many world-famed attractions. The genius of man and the mystery of nature gave birth to the Renaissance movement here. Legends such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo Buonarroti, Giovanni Da Verrazzano, Dante Alighieri, Giovanni Boccaccio, Niccolò Machiavelli, Antonio Meucci, and Amerigo Vespucci shaped our sciences, peotries, arts, politics, and exploring spirits. For car enthusiasts, this region has another importance. Some say that the babies born here are very special. They are born with the need for speed. It is hard to argue with that statement knowing that this place has Lamborghini, Ferrari, Maserati, Pagani Zonda, and Dallara. Despite such exotic reputation, this region doesn't give the opulent impression that one would expect. Instead, tree-lined roads, simple creamy brick houses with red curvy clay roofs... read more

Marbella Marbella has the remains of the old Muslim walls, Marbella's casco antiguo. The old town has a maze of picturesque winding streets and charming little plazas, with plenty of outdoor bars where you can sample typical Andalusian cuisine. At the center of this intricate pattern of alleyways is Plaza de los Naranjos, with the 3 to 4 century old town hall and fountain. Getting lost in this maze is the best way to experience this historic town. Marbella also has the modern and opulent section called Puerto Banus, where all kinds of multi-million dollar yachts are docked along with the accompanying rows of parked Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Bentleys, Rolls Royces, Porsches, and Aston Martins. Elegance and glamor are everywhere in this section. The coast from Puerto Banus to Malaga is gorgous, filled with rolling hills and ... read more

Traveling for extended period of time, I yearn for some comforts of routines at home; getting take-outs from Tasty Curry, King of Thai, and Pasta Pomodoro, meeting friends and co-workers for lunches or dinners, going to Salsa parties, and many others. While I can easily deal with or find substitutes for the cravings above, I have one strong longing that could not be substituted; driving my car. I am suffering because of my strong attachment to the joy of driving, especially since most of my modes of transportation in the last two months are planes, buses, and trains. Buddhist philosophers say that I should be aware of my attachments and detach the self from the the objects of desires to avoid suffering. For this time, I go against their suggestion. I buckled and accepted my weakness. ... read more

Rothenburg ob-der-Tauber A few days earlier, in addition to visiting the Bavarian favorites; Munich, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and Füssen (Neuschwanstein Castle), we visited the medieval fortified town of Rothenburg o.d.T. The medieval walls and the coble stone roads and alleys ooze a thousand years of history. The archaic architectures of this town emanate the dreamy antiquity. The history the 30-year war created an Indiana-Jones-like mystery complete with the underground passages and dark dungeons. The Rathaus at the Marktplatz has two structures, one that has the Renaissance style and the other has the Gothic style. Climbing the Rathaus clock tower was a worthwhile experience. Not only we had to climb the never ending spiraling and zig zaging stair steps, we also had to go through various crevices through the ceilings of many floors. Once we arrived at the top, ... read more

Have you ever felt that you have been called? It is the unexplainable calling from within you. If you try to explain this calling to your families and friends, they will think you have lost it. The Alps that span across Switzerland and Italy are not as colossal as the inspirational but deadly K-2 in Tibet. But once you witness the grandiose view before me, you too will hear that calling from within you. It was just after midnight and the full moon lit these vast valleys and the gigantic white capped mountains. I had both car windows fully opened. The fresh pristine Alpine spring air filled the interior of the car I was driving at that time. For a moment, I thought I could smell the ancient glaciers that shone brightly. The mountains here glow ... read more

Driving to the center of Como, I see the parked milk truck that passed me forty minutes ago. Turning onto the Lungo Lario Trieste main waterfront street, the traffic gets really busy. Near the roundabout I see rows of Ducatis, BMWs, Hondas, Suzuki racing motorcycles parked like the Deutsche Bahn railway table. Across the street at the Golosita corner outdoor café, the riders are congregating and enjoying the beautiful sunny day. The red, yellow, green, blue, and orange riders’ customs and helmets add to the already colorful ambience of this town. This street is filled with many aromatic Italian restaurants. Hundreds of people are having lunch with their families, friends, and lovers. Seafood is the specialty. The daily catches from the Lake Como are the highlights of the menus around town.
