After over a week on Lanta we decided it was about time we moved on and see some other places, so it was back down to the pier and time to head out over the water again. I have never really been a fan of boats but since we have been in Thailand they have definately grown on me. There is just something totally relaxing about laying on the top deck looking up a clear blue sky with the sun shining down. The zen levels are hampered though sometimes by fat old men in speedos but the less said about them the better. Phuket is a massive island with several different locations you can head to, orignally we had planned to go to either Kata or Karon beach but when we arrived it was late and ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Lanta December 15th 2009

I can't say it was overally disapointing to be waiting at the pier for our boat to arrive and whisk us away from Phi Phi. After settling down on the boat and choosing our accomodation from the Thai man who would end up living in a hut next to us for the week, we were on our way. Ko Lanta is quite a big island, maybe 30Km long with a road running parallel to the beach all the way along the coast with resorts dotted along it. The other side of the island which we never got to explore has jungle, national parks and even some sea gypsies. I really hope I get to come back and sea more of the island. The bungalow we had chosen was virtually on the beach, had satallite TV showing ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Phi Phi Don December 10th 2009

Ko Phi Phi was made famous as being the setting for the movie 'The Beach' which I am sure you all know as being the Leonardo DeCaprio film where he finds an island paradise, steals his mates hot French girlfriend before going stark raving bonkers. Well the only similarities I found with the movie was getting to hang out with a stunning French girl one evening. Ko Phi Phi was pretty much totally wiped out by the Tsunami and had to be completely rebuilt, they have created a maze of shops, stalls and restaurants which once the sun goes down becomes a jungle that's impossible to navigate, especially after a few free buckets. Phi Phi is definately the liviest place we have been so far but when it's full of English, Americans and Aussies I don't ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Railay December 7th 2009

Thailand can mean a lot of things to a lot of people, some want the hustle and bustle of Bangkok, some the neon lights of Phuket. I wanted white sand beaches, with a laid back way of life, which is exactly what they have here. Railay is a little beach seperated into three parts for the backpackers, climbers and honeymooners and appeared to be a little Thai rasta community completely cut off from the rest of Thailand. The only way in or out is by longtail boat. The people were the friendliest i have met so far, no pretense like you can find in other places when on your travels. We found a cool bar and got stuck into some Mai Thai cocktails with some added local whisky/tequila combination from what i could gather and played ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ao Nang December 4th 2009

When we left Malaysia it was a bit of a grim day, when we landed in Thailand it was baking hot, lush green trees, clear blue skies. Welcome to the land of Smiles! We made the not that difficult decision to get a plush air conditioned taxi and sat back to enjoy the views on an interesting first introduction to the Thai style of driving. After a few Fernando Alonso stlye overtaking manouveres we were dropped off in a quaint little beach resort right outside the local McDonalds. Ao Nang seemed to be a bit more family orientated than most places in Thailand so there was a lot of nice restaurants serving all kinds of food, we settled on pizza, why change the habit of a lifetime. We went exploring down the beach which was surrounded ... read more

It was good to finally touch down after 14 hours stuck in a flying toilet roll that Air Asia class as a plane. Having one episode of The Simpsons and a not exactly delicious chicken nugget was never going to smooth the passage into Asia. That said it was well worth it when we stepped off the plane and the heat hit us for the first time. It was 9pm, pitch black and 33 degrees. And it just carried on getting better after that, what should of been a two hour immigration queue was cut short when they decided to open another counter, which bizarely started from me right at the back. So after a short stroll to the hotel we did what any respectable man would do and ordered a bucket of Tiger beer and ... read more
