South America » Brazil » Amazonas » Manaus September 14th 2009

Manaus Day 2 After a good but hot nights sleep we headed off for a trek through the jungle, the heat was incredible, you just had to step outside and you were covered with a sheen of sweat, as a result there as no point taking a shower - also the showers were full of mosquitoes so it was more trouble than it was worth! The size of Amazonia is mind boggling I was only restricted to one small part and we travelled on Tributaries which were wider than any rivers in England and yet for here they were tiny. And everywhere we went there were dolphins cresting the water's surface. During the trek, Rubens showed us what the native plants could be used for, he was stripping bark and eating eaves and insects and all ... read more

South America » Brazil » Amazonas » Manaus September 12th 2009

Its that time of year again - holiday time and my next adventure involves travelling round Brazil with a couple of side trips to Paraguay and Argentina thrown in. The main areas I will be visiting are the Amazon rainforest near Manaus, then Iguassu Falls, Rio then chilling out on the tropical Island of Ihla Grande. Not sure how often I will be able to update the blog, if not possible during the trip itself will have to complete retrospectively when I get back. My first destination is Manaus in the heart of the Amazon, to get there I flew with Lufthansa via Frankfurt and taking into account the 5 hour stopover this took approx 24 hours to get from Manchester (UK) to Sao Paulo. I then immediately took another flight to Manaus, in total this ... read more

It would take 36 hours to travel overland from Kathmandu to Delhi and since I have made this journey once already I decided to catch a flight with Jetlite for 70 pounds sterling. There was very strict security at Kathmandu airport but fortunately they let my backpack through, the smell that must be emanating from that bag by now:-) You could tell wandering the streets that you were back in India there were little blobs of red juice on the streets were the locals had spit our their betel juice. They chew betel nuts as it is a mild stimulant but it leaves a unfortunate side effect of red lips, teeth and tongue - nice!! I am staying in the backpacker ghetto of Paharganj which takes some getting used to, if this is the first place ... read more

Asia » Nepal » Bhaktapur » Durbar Square March 24th 2009

Today I visited Bhaktapur which lies around 40 mins away to the East of Kathmandu. Bhaktapur is an ancient Newar town in the east corner of the Kathmandu Valley. It is the third largest city in Kathmandu valley and was once the capital of Nepal during the great Malla Kingdom until the second half of the 15th century. Bhaktapur is known for its fabulous culture and indigeneous lifestyle. It is listed as a World Heritage by UNESCO for its abundant rich culture, temples, artworks in wood, metal and stone. Again I got the bus from near the park, it was difficult to find the bus though I had to ask about 4 people before someone eventually pointed me in the right direction. Bhaktapur was really nice to walk around as there was limited traffic allowed around ... read more

Asia » Nepal » Kathmandu » Pashupatinath Temple March 24th 2009

Busy day today, lots of temples to see - you can never see too many temples, can you?? As usual I decided to reach my destinations the hard way - by local transport. The bus station or rather the part of the road where all the buses and minibuses parked is adjoining the park south east of Thamel. Obviously none of the buses had a sign displaying their destination so I had to keep wandering up to the drivers shouting Patan Patan until one said yes. I got chatting to a couple of students on the bus, they had been in Kathamandu voting in the student elections the day before, he was saying that the elected student have a lot of power and had a say in how the Government run things. I started to explain ... read more

It took 7 hours to travel the 140 kms from Chitwan to Kathmandu, which gives you an idea of how steep and windy the journey was, the views were pretty amazing though - there's some big mountains here!! On arriving at the bus station there was the usual swarm of taxi drivers and I ended up sharing a taxi with a nice young French girl who I ended up going with a drink with later that night. She was called Amelie and lived in Montmartre in Paris - just like the film. By the way I haven't mentioned so far that Nepal and Varanasi have no electricity for most of the day and night which is fun. Kathmandu is very much like some of the Indian cities I have visited very congested, dirty, noisy and polluted - ... read more

Asia » Nepal » Chitwan March 20th 2009

I decided to get a package tour to Chitwan instead of trying to get there on my own as it worked out cheaper in the end. It cost $50 which seemed reasonable as it included all transport, food and lodging and park fees. My trip was delayed for a couple of days as there had been a bit of an uprising by the local Tharu people and they had killed 7 tigers and closed the park to visitors. This was a real shame as there weren't many tigers as it was, I think 80 at the last count. When I arrived at the bus station the driver asked me if I wanted to ride on the roof as it afforded a wonderful view!! I politely declined and chose a seat instead, there were some crazy swedes ... read more

Asia » Nepal » Pokhara March 12th 2009

My journey to Nepal lasted 25 hours and as usual was not without incident. I took the overnight train from Varanasi to Gorakhpur which was 1.5 hours later and set off at 02:00, I got about 4 hours sleep before waking up at Gorakhpur to be told that there were no buses to the border town of Sunnauli. As usual I took what I was told with a pinch of salt and set off for the bus station anyway. Gorakhpur is an awful place and I did not not want to stay there overnight which was was the only option left if I couldn't get onward transport. As I was walking along a guy started shouting Sunnauli at me and pointed into a jeep - result! - so my backpack was flung on he roof and ... read more

On arriving from the 13 hour night train from Agra Varanasi was a joy to behold, I've arrived just in time for the Holi festival which as you've guess is a holy festival. I met some new chums in Asra the previous night so there were 5 of us who got on the train to Varanasi. For those of you who don't know Varanasi (City of shiva) is arguably the holiest paces in India lying on the banks of the River Ganges. This where many followers from all across India come to be cremated, it is said that if this happens then you will break the cycle of being reborn so you won't come back as something else. Everything here is focused around the ghats in the river, these are basically stone steps that lead down ... read more

Early in the morning at the Sawai Madhopur train station I bumped into a nice German couple who were with me on the train and what a train it was. All the AC seats were booked so I had to travel second class. By the time we approached the back of the train were our carriages were it was already starting to pull away and there were guys at the open door saying there was no room after passing a couple of carriages I realised that if I didn't get on the next one I would miss it so I resorted to brute force and charged at the next doorway and jumped into the throng of people gathered there (it was just like catching a tube in London:-) closely followed by my new chums. There was ... read more
