Grateful Wife When two people get married, they vow to support each other for better or for worse. Dave Kalberg knew when he married me that I wanted to pursue a teaching job overseas. We imagined Germany or Italy or some European country. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine dragging him to the other side of the world and live in Central Asia in a city of 2 million people who speak Russian. Not only did he join me, he supported any doubts I had and has encouraged me every day to appreciate this adventure. We are not bike trekking across Europe, we are climbing mountains, watching hockey, riding subways and city buses and loving almost every minute of it. I am so grateful to have him by my side, on my team and loving me every day.
Fancy train - is it super fast? Sounds like you're working hard & having fun with your new experiences. We're doing the usual & I'm trying some new volunteer opportunities; will be collecting supplies for the firefighters & WA fire victims 2 hrs/day Tuesdays 'till end of Sept. in Spokane Valley. Love, Jill (& Bob)

excitement and fear As I read your adventures, I often have moments of that mixed feeling of excitement and fear that accompanies stepping out into the unknown. You must have that often, since virtually everything fits into that category when you are living in a new place, learning a new town, starting a new job, eating new foods, making new friends. It must actually be exhausting. No doubt you will strengthen your bond with each other and the newness will wear off, but what an intense experience.
Adventure Envy your wonderful adventures. Sounds like you both have just plunged in and are willing to be positive about getting out and about. Thank You the blogs! Enjoy hearing and seeing what you are up to. Hugs! Kris
Adventures! Looks like you are enjoying each day and that fills my heart with joy for you. I look forward to following your adventure here! Hugs to you both. We love you.
world travelers I would expect 8 year old world travelers would be different in many ways from other 8 year-olds, but certainly the same in many other ways. That will be very interesting. It is also interesting to me what kinds of pix you will find on labels. Ocean waves for salt does make sense (at least after-the-fact). You will have to depend on your sense of smell to decide what things are. Being in a foreign environment and not knowing the language seems extremely daunting.
Yeah! so glad you guys made it! Your apartment is beautiful! You two are on such a wonderful adventure.... I love the blog and photos... keep it up! Miss you and love you guys!
culture shock I like the apartment. Square toilet? I'd like to know what the designer was thinking. Looking forward to seeing pix of the city. Scary, thrilling, fun. The adventure of a lifetime. At some point, I would expect you to also feel fear and discouragement, too. I am excited to get to watch this unfold.
We are spending a year in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Kim is a teacher and has a job here teaching 8 year olds at a international school. This is our adventure and travels while we are here, Learning a new language and new customs and enjoying life. We are from a small town in Northern Idaho and have never spent any time overseas. She has been a teacher for over 20 years and I am a mechanic. This is our adventure.... full info
