Well, here it is, my final blog post. I can't believe how fast this trip flew by. It seemed like we had so much time when we got here, but it all picked up so fast and here we are at the airport. After the jungle in Misahualli, we went to the small village of Papallacta, were the elevation is much higher and it was much colder. We arrived this past Tuesday night, and following dinner, we went in one of the 3 hot springs that are built into the hotel. It was so relaxing ... read more

So due to poor wifi the past few days and my broken laptop, I'm writing this on my phone at the airport in Quito while we wait 8 hours for our flight. I'll be uploading this blog and the final one tomorrow when I get home. This past Sunday we departed from our time in Banos which I covered last time, and traveled to Misahualli, a very rural jungle area, and stayed at a super cool hotel with rustic cabins in the dead middle of the jungle. Monday morning we went to a boat tour place, and they took us out on the Napo river in some skinny canoe shaped boats with motors. They took us to a wildlife rescue facility called Amazoonico, where we were able to see animals such as parrots, anacondas, caimans, and ... read more

1/26 Sunday: This past Friday morning we arrived safely in Banos, and after a quick city tour, and a debriefing/reflection session we headed quickly to bed. The next morning we went to the hot springs pools at the bottom of a volcano next to the town. They are basically swimming pools filled with the hot sulfur water from the bottom of the volcano, that is usually about hot tub temperature and said to have healing properties. They also have showers with the water from the waterfalls at the top of the volcano so that every 15 minutes you can switch between the hot springs and cold showers. The scenery around the pools was amazing and it was super relaxing. After about an hour or two I returned the pool at the hotel to lay in the ... read more

Hello again, today's topics to cover: chocolate, rock climbing, hiking, and a little bit more about dogs ? I am writing this on Thursday (1/23), sadly our last full day with our host families. Yesterday some people gave their image presentations, and after we visited a chocolate company called Pacari. It was founded in Quito in 2002, and is the first chocolate company in the world to receive a biodynamic certification from Demeter International. They are all about utilizing the Cacao plants from farmers to create quality products and they have a line of products that allows the farmers to know where their crops are going. They are all about environmentally friendly everything too which is awesome. We got to sit down and do a super fancy chocolate tasting with several flavors, all of which were ... read more

Hey what's up everyone, this post will be a little different than the others as I’ve been sick the past few days and don’t have as many big events/outings to cover. However, due to being ill, I’ve spent a lot of time resting and I’ve had the opportunity to process my time here and decompress a bit from the busyness. Sunday was another day off from academics to spend with our host family. We hopped in the car with our mama and Abuelita and drove around to various catholic churches in the city of Quito. They would pull over and let us get out and look around and take pictures. We got to walk through some of them looking at the beautiful art work throughout. One large church we visited had some handicapped beggars outside and ... read more

Volcanoes, Alpacas, Ice cream. What do all these things have in common? Not too much honestly. But now that I have your attention let me tell you about the past few days and some stories about those three things. First, a quick recap of Wednesday and Thursday. These two days consisted of another Spanish class, a presentation on indigenous people of Ecuador, an awesome cooking class, and lots of delicious ice cream from the mall near our school. The ice cream here is so much richer and tastier than anything I’ve had in the states. Friday morning we left for the city Otavalo, about 2 hours from Quito. We made several stops including a delicious biscuit and cheese shop, and a hike to Peguche waterfall. We got a lot of great photos from the hike and ... read more

O hey welcome back, this should be a fun one so strap in and let's go. I’m writing this on 1/16 but I’ll mostly be covering our trip to the Ciudad Mitad del Mundo (Middle of the World City) we took on 1/13. It was an absolute blast, and pictures I don’t include in the blog will be up on social media eventually. The city contains the Monument to the Equator, which shows the exact location of the Equator (from which the country takes its name). We left at 9 AM for the city and took a bus with a great tour guide who gave us all sorts of interesting information about Quito in addition to the Ciudad Mitad del Mundo. 1 short hour later and we were there. We began with a tour of the ... read more

And just like that, we’re back with blog number 2. A lot has happened since I wrote my first blog and I’m excited to share that with you. This post will cover this past Saturday and Sunday and because they were so eventful I’ll try to keep it to the big events and key insights as much as possible (along with lots of pictures of course). While we were expecting to go to Mass this past Sunday, we actually ended up going to a catholic-based service on Saturday afternoon with our mama and abuela. Many of the practices were representative of a catholic service, such as the way communion was prepared and administered by the priest and his assistants. It was much shorter than a typical mass service, however, and it was SO flashy and decorative ... read more

Hola and welcome and to my Travel Blog! As many of you know I am in Quito Ecuador for the month of January with Messiah College to study and interact with the culture, practice my Spanish (and wow do I need it), and draw as much as I can from my experiences. There are 26 Messiah students including myself on the trip and by partnering with ACLAS (Andean Center for Latin American Studies) We have been blessed with the opportunity to live with host families for two of the 3 weeks we will be in Ecuador. I am required to create a total of 9 blog entries throughout the 3 weeks and I plan to fill them various events, stories, and pictures from our stay and how they relate to the individual, relational, and social levels, ... read more
