Eye-opening Hey lady!! Miss you lots still and am very excited to see you soon!
Sounds like a very eye-opening situation, and you have to feel bad for the people that know better but can't get anyone else to listen. A dictatorship in disguise - what a terrible situation. You get the illusion of hope, but the people that know better know that its empty. And "Sure you can have free electricity - we won't charge you a cent" but it comes at the cost of lives.
More proof that there are lots of people in this world that won't see past their own wants and see how what they are doing is harmful to others. So many countries in Africa are headed up by power (and money) hungry thugs, it is so sad to see it. How disillusioning to know that its Uganda too. The illusion of democracy can hide many unpleasant things.
Yeah - another update from Deb Always awesome to read your updates and about your experiences - but it was especially awesome to talk to you on Sunday!
Its the traditional ceremonies that would be so fascinating to me - I am glad you got to experience that. I would love to see those pictures - I bet you have some good ones!
Keep on holding your head up and doing the good work! Its probably getting tougher now that you see the light at the end of the tunnel, but just keep on hanging on and you will be home before you know it! And getting your ribs crushed in bear hugs from all the people here who miss you!
thinking of you I love reading your blogs, Debra. I'm so glad you made it safely to Edith's place. Will you stay wtih her for the rest of your time there? Absorb all the wisdom you can. I know you will. We are all learning along with you!
a new education Wow - sounds like you are really getting an eye-opening education into the way things work when you take off the red-white-blue glasses. Those glasses really distort things, but it is difficult to take them off when so many have no exposure to anything different. Hopefully you can help us all learn about what steps we can take to make a real difference.
I am so proud of the work you are doing! And proud of the courage that you show us all when you go out there and do your damnedest to make a difference! Keep up the good work and we will look forward to seeing you in about another month!!!
3 cheers for Deb!!!

We gonna party!! Hope life is well and time is passin, Benny calls, luv ya!!!
Keep up the good work! Deb, we miss you so much, and are so proud of the work you are doing! When I think of you I worry for your safety, cause the world is a scary place, but I know that you are smart and strong and are capable of anything you put your mind to. The face that you put your mind to helping others and to creating a better world for people on another continent shows that you are compassionate beyond measure.
You are a shining light setting an example for all of us!
So true we take for granted great liberties, because we've never had to give anything for them. Some fight for this country and lay down their lives, others are family of these people. The majority of us just live our lives ignorant of the toll, or even the great privileges we experience.
These things will make you stronger! Sounds like you are learning about some hurtful things - and I can understand why you would be scared to learn more. But keep on pressing on - you are stronger than you realize, and its your personal strength and compassion that can help to change the world around you. Keep up the good work - I believe in you!
deb deb debbie deb Your value is beyond measure. It saddens me that someone with such a bleeding heart gets to see and experience so much reality but I know God put you there because you feel it and when one feels it one responds. You have been gi en a very special opportunity and I pray you are part of a wonderful change for the women in Uganda. Love you Deb! Love love love you Deb!
deb deb debbie deb Oh Deb how crazy you would write this as the last several days I have been thinking about the bigger picture and what can I do to make it as great as I can> You are such an inspiration to me and I love you ohhhhhhhh so much! I know that you are being challenged but don't think your tender heart is silly, its you and we love it. It is sad that people have to be hardened to lifes struggles, we are very fortunate to not have to share much in that. I am grateful for my place and my healthy family, and pray you continue to be under God's great covering. Be blessed sis and I love hearing from you!!!
God's after you Debra, your blog entry gave me goosebumps! Doesn't strike you as even a little bit strange that, even as far away as Uganda, you are surrounded by people who love the Lord? This doesn't happen to everyone, you know that, right?? God is pursuing you because He LOVES you!! Where do you stand these days on accepting the gift He offers?
awe. debra you are such a great women! i'm enjoying hearing about all the things you struggle with while being there as well as the things yoru learning, its encouraging for the rest of us back here to get a prospective on the outside world( meaning outside of our country and comfort zones). miss you! Debra! I just heard on the news about a bombing in Uganda. People were watching the world cup and a bomb exploded in the cafe. I hope you are safe and healthy!! The Ames high kids are back, and they LOVED you. You have impacted lives and made a difference already. Rachel told Rylie that you asked her every day how she was doing and actually took the time to listen to the answer and really care about how she was doing. You are a unique and incredible woman. I know that Rachel is not the only one who will be changed because you cared. Uganda is lucky to have you for now. We can't wait to hug you again (whether you like it or not :)
oh coffee lady You are lucky for your experience and the people who get to be in contact with you are truely blessed. It is great that you continue to remind us of our abuncance here in the US. We have just celebrated the fourth of July and we missed having you here this year. But having you where you are helps me to rememberhow lucky we are for our liberties, I am grateful to be an American and sad that I take it for granted so often. God bless you Deb and stay strong we are all here for you and many are missing you tremendously. Andrew B asked me to come to Burgies more often because it reminds them of Deb.:) Hugs and luv and prayers!!
deb deb debbie deb The summer is going fast here Deb, I hope times are going quickly for you too! I am glad we got to talk to you the other day!! You sound really good and I loved the story about the girls singing on the bus! I am finishing up some classes this week, and the World Food issues class has been life changing. I have made it a personal goal to research Uganda as much as I can when I have papers to do on developing countries. I have learned so much about where you are and it has been fun! You are such an inspiration! I love you and I can't wait to talk again! God bless and take care of that tummy! Iheard its not doing so well some days!
So good to hear from you! It was wonderful reading the update! WE MISS YOU! But I am glad you are having fun and new experiences!
Sounds like you are developing an amazing appreciation for both other cultures and our own at home.
I'll say it again: I am so proud of you! Keep up the good work! Glad things aren't rushed - there's plenty of stress being in a new place without the stress of feeling rushed. Feel free to take the time to breathe - its ok!
Miss you, love you and please stay safe and keep having amazing experiences!
deb deb debbie deb Hey Deb just got done reading your blog to dad and the kids!! Awesome entry just waht we wanted to see. Dad wants you to know that we went to the Arts festival yesterday, Benny, K, Reenie tagged along and ran the show. We got to look at a few stands but ended up spending most of our time in the fountains, it was very hot with no wind down amongst the city buildings. I thought of you when I was hot and thirsty and I had to buy water for $2.50 for a 2 ounce bottle. Went to spaghetti works afterwards and again I think of you and your modified diet. Dad wants you to know that Benny pooped at Spaghetti Works. You are so awesome to make such a sacrifice. And you are right being an American has its wicked perks!! Lovin the cheese lovin the pasta! We will have a grand feast when you come home. Our summer is going fast and I wish I could say it went slow here. We do the reading program at the library. Swimming as much as possible. I've been in Ames quite a few times and many have asked about you. We talk about you frequently and everytime a plane goes over Izzy says is Deb in that plane? I saw Raske the other day we had a play date and ate pizza. He says hi, it was funny to watch him and Kay go at it, just like you and him did. Keepin it real!!!!! I have been researching gardening options for your locale. Sorry about the geographic info mixup before, as it turns out if you were where I thought you were we would be worrying. Benny is walking around now!! I will be putting some pics of you on your facebook page that Kay made in your honor! That way we can all laugh at you!! I am such a great big sis!!! I love you and please let us know how to mail things to you. Kay will be having a fundraiser for you this summer and would like to know how to get funds to you, she would like to contribute to the girls school you are working at. I would like to mail you a care packet and some printed sheets for garden plans. Hugs and love from all of us.
FINALLY a Blog from Deb!!!! I just read your blog Deb, I am so glad to see some sort of contact. WOW it seems that you have been gone a long time. I miss you and know that you are doing what your heart tells you too, so I will embrace the people of Uganda having my Deb for as long as it takes. I LOVE you. Mom

Almost 2 weeks!!! Deb, Waiting for some pictures of your GREAT adventure, it must be beautiful in Uganda. We would all love to see some flora and fauna, maybe next time you need to take your Mom along as your personal photographer?
hi Do not be terrified ,especially if it is your second time ,it is the culture, environmental, experience which shape us.That is a good idea , and 6 months always seem long but it is short especially if you make your project interesting .
I have hosted volunteers for 1 year ,and i found it too short as having them around was a nice experience and the were having fun too.
I'm So Proud Debra, Way to go, Girl! One thing I've learned about in all my travels, in each journey you learn so much about yourself. I am so jealous about your adventures in Uganda. You know that I, as well that your Mom, Dad, and Grandma (most positively), will miss you, dearly, but you will have the experience of a life time. One, that I am so jealous of. Your Dad just keeps telling me I have to come visit. Right! Oh, it's so easy to say. Auntie Sue
