Well, Pancho and his two sons picked up eleven of us at 8 in the morning and we made the 2 hour trek up into the mountains. I thought that Tunis Mills was rural... HAH! I have never seen anything like I saw on this trip and I don´t think I ever will again. I´ll say upfront that I´m glad I did this trek but I would not do it again!!! After 2 hours we made it to the small village we were starting from which was at 13,000 feet. We all felt the altitude immediatley after getting off the bus. There was a Quechan man and women who got the llamas together and loaded our packs on the llamas and then we headed out to go up... up...up. When I decided to do this I ... read more

Well, when I woke up in the morning I was feeling much better! However, Kelly (from Atlanta) and Andrea (from California) were both sick. It seems like we are dropping by twos! I didn´t go to my Wawa Wasi placement and instead we went to the Maximum Security Prison. Children under the age of 4 live in prison with their parents. When they turn 4 they must either go to relatives (if they have any) or they go to the orphanage. Really, Í don´t know what is better... growing up without a parent or living in a prison and then being ripped away from your mother. Very Sad. We took them out to the Plaza and fed the pigeons. We colored a bit on the sidewalk and then they had some juice and cookies. We also ... read more

No pictures today because there wasn´t anything to take a picture of except maybe the walls of my bathroom! I didn´t sleep all that well. The DAMM rooster. I don´t recall if I´ve mentioned him before but he´s a real problem and has no sense of time. He crows all day and all night. REALLY! He hasn´t bothered me the first few nights but I guess since I was´t feeling the greatest last night he kept me up. Many of us here are real animal lovers but we´d like to pluck his feathers out one by one!! When I got up this morning I didn´t feel too well and it didn´t take too long for me to realize that I wasn´t going anywhere. I was terrified of going to my Wawa Wasi and having to use ... read more

We had a speaker this afternoon... Carlos who is an anthropologist from the University. He gave a wonderful lecture on the Coca culture here in Peru. I found it immensly interesting... Coca has been known in Peru for over 3,500 years - it was discovered about the same time the people domesticated corn, guinea pig and the Peruvian dog (hairless thing like a rat). We know it existed that long ago since coca has been found in tombs as offerings to the Gods. The Inca empire used alot of coca however, it was only available to the nobility. When the Spanish invaded they gave coca to the workers to use in the mines since it helped them to work harder and longer. Coca has three main uses. 1. Medicine - for headaches, stomaches, body aches and ... read more

I just had lunch and I thought I´d try to get on the computer quickly so I´ll be brief. The intenet cafe is VERY busy at night and its almost imposible to upload photos. Today was FULL of excitement and its only 1:20 PM... I was taken to my Wawa Wasi today and this time I brought a dinosaur coloring book (thanks Robin) and some crayons. From about 8 until 9 we colored and then they had their snack with is this milky liquid with bark and oatmeal thats served hot. Then it was time to VAMOS. All the kids put on these blue smocks that said Wawa Wasi and Bea even had me put one on. We headed UPHILL to meet some other Wawa Wasis. By the time we got there since we were going ... read more

Well.. it´s 8 PM and I have made it through my first full day. Well, I have more to tell about the bull running... Yesterday afternoon Pancho (who runs the tours) took all of us on a city tour. We went down to Santa Ana which you may remember is where we went on sunday to watch the bulls. He took us to a very famous weaver´s shop and his stuff was gorgeous. All of his colors are done with natural dyes -- roots, vegetables, etc. The average price in there was around 500 soles ($200 and up). I plan on going back there! We also went to a famous carver of alabaster stone. He made beautiful earrings, carvings, you name it. Anyhow, while walking through the plaza the bullfighting (which we were stragecially kept away ... read more

Well, after everything it is so hard to believe that I am here. The journey started in BWI with a short 2 hour flight to Atlanta. I had just enough time to walk down to my gate with about 15 minutes to spare before boarding. At the gate I met Kelly who is another CCS volunteer. On my flight to Lima I sat next to a lovely older woman from Peru. Needless to say with my Spanish skills we didn´t have a lot to talk about! She did have me make the sign of the cross with her upon take off and landing! Since I was close to the front of the plane I was able to clear Immigration pretty quickly. Kelly and I went upstairs and found a bar and proceeded to use my first ... read more

It is so hard to believe that I leave in 5 Days. It really does seem like this journey is a lifetime in the making. As we grow closer to my departure I'm having trouble sleeping and getting a bit nervous. I'm nervous and excited about the cultural differences and the language. As most of you know, I've been assigned to the Wawa Wasi (Wawa = Baby and Wasi = House, in Quechua) is a community initiative to provide daycare services for families living in extreme poverty. In most cases the caretaker lends a room in her home to be used for educational and recreational activities for some 9 infants and children aged 9 months - 4 years. The government provides some educational materials and hot meals for the children as well as a small stipend ... read more
