I quit my teaching job and moved to Chile. I have no concrete plans, no new job lined up, no idea where I'll end up living and yet surprisingly, no worries. I guess that officially qualifies me as a free spirit. Many people, including my previous principal, asked me why. Why would I up and shimmy over to a different country, on a different continent, with no definite plans under my belt? There are many reasons. It's hard to explain but around December of last year, I got this unshakable feeling that it was simply time for me to go. I not only wanted to move to Chile but I suddenly needed to. Many events pointed me towards that decision. There was an unequivocal urgency coursing though my veins. I got to the point where I ... read more

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times..." I spent 4 days and 3 nights on a real-life version of Total Drama Island, Isla Baru. Our stay was replete with scandal, scams, new friends, calling the authorities, men who workout, and sleeping with no door. Oh, and a crab in the toilet! Can't forget Mr. Crabs... At least on Total Drama Island the contestants have to sign up for it. My friends and I did not sign up but we found ourselves inundated in drama anyway! Carolina, Picha and I checked out of our hostel, bought a TON of groceries, and headed for Isla Baru. We missed the speedboat but thankfully they recently built a bridge connecting the island to the mainland so we took a taxi. An hour later we arrived, ... read more

Today I swam in volcanic mud. No, really. We went to the Totumo volcano in between Cartagena and Baranquilla. It's a natural volcano full of a special kind of mud with salts, magnesium, and other minerals that are supposedly great for the skin. At first I was hesitant. Have you seen my hair? It's big and there's a lot of it! I couldn't imagine getting heavy mud saturated into my already 2 lb hair! Surely my neck would snap and roll off. But my friends wanted to do it and I got to thinking, "Hey, you only live once!" I bought a hot pink head scarf that matched my bikini, and went for it. We paid about $20 USD each for the tour. A van WITH air conditioning (praise the Lord!!!) came and picked us up ... read more

I officially hate flying. Those two flights and that 9 HOUR LAYOVER in Bogota were harrowing. Why couldn't someone close the stinkin' airport doors?? It was in the middle of the night when I landed and it was arctic FREEZING! I never want to see Bogota again... But in stark contrast, in Cartagena, it feels like I'm in a dream. Not only am I in a place where I've wanted to visit for 3 years, but I feel an extra level of triumph because people once said I couldn't come here. "But there's FARC. What about the kidnappings in the past? What about the drugs?" Forget FARC! I'm here, the sun in blazing and I'm loving it! However, my Chilean friends are melting. They repeatedly ask me, "How are you not sweating more?" And I keep ... read more

It's challenging trying to wade through romantic advances as a foreigner. For some reason I've been meeting a lot of guys here and I can't quite put my finger on why. I really don't get this much action back at home. To not put people on blast, my friends and I decided to name them. There's Pheromone Guy, Persistent Guy, Old-man Guy? I'm not going to touch on that one! Sleeping Beauty Guy, Brazilian Guy, Horseback Guide Guy, and then one Guy who shall remain doubly nameless. Brittney has been joking and calling me the South American man magnet. Yes, Chilean men are fascinated by black women. It's rare that they see one. But at this point, I don't know if I can even blame it on that. I was black last time too! But this ... read more

Have you ever needed so desperately to break free from the constraints of society, let your hair down, and release your inner caveman? I've only showered twice in the last 6 days. I fell off a horse in the Valley of Death and narrowly escaped getting trampled. And I have desert sand where the sun don't shine. That's what San Pedro de Atacama Chile did for me. Who knew being unkempt for days could feel so refreshing? We hopped on a bus last week at 11 P.M. on Wednesday knowing that we would be on there for literally 24 hours. Ouch! But it wasn't so bad because Brittney and I were excited that our friend Crystal from the States was joining us on our trip! My host parents are so nice, allowing me and two of ... read more

If it doesn’t hit you in the front side, it’ll hit you in the back! Chilean slang is very infectious and this time around, I've been using a lot of it. I don’t just speak Spanish anymore. I speak Chilean! It really is its on language. When I went out with my host sister and her friends, I was talking to Pablo about dating (he was having lady drama) and this is what he said. “Las minas de aca son frescas, ¿cachai? Por eso no las pesco. Todo lo cabro chico tienen que aprender eso po." I really enjoyed talking to him but I laughed because I realized that if I hadn't have spent so much time in this culture I would have had NO EARTHLY idea what he was talking about! Even a native Spanish ... read more

Screaming at the top of my lungs in the Plaza de Viña is how I started my day today. If you had just gotten out of a colectivo and noticed that your left thumb did NOT get the memo you might have done the same thing. I can only hope that most people did not understand the words that came out of my mouth as I stood in front of a busy colectivo stop emitting a blood curdling cry. I slammed my thumb in the colectivo door! I don't even mean that I banged my thumb with the door. No. I mean I slammed the car door completely shut and my thumb was in it! I have never been so clumsy as I am here. It was like this last time too only this time I've ... read more

I'm beginning to wonder if I'm going to go to bed. Ever. I feel like I haven't slept in the whole two weeks I've been here! I'm going to bed at like 5 A.M. and waking up at 9. I can't seem to "turn down." Thank you Lil Jon for personally writing my theme song, my Chilean anthem. There's always something beautiful to see, something cool to do, or someone fun to hang out with. People are more nocturnal here. Prime example: Last week, all of us "young people" went to bed and my host parents were still downstairs talking and watching TV at 2 A.M! It was impressive. I'm a night person too so I'm really loving this. Another reason I can't "turn down" is because I've been hanging out with my host brother ALL ... read more

All day... All night... Today, the emphasis is on ALL DAY. Yes, it is 8:30 P.M. on a Thursday and I just got back from having the time of my life quite randomly at a bar/discoteca? I still can't decide what kind of place that was. All I know is that it was awesome! My host sister Priscilla A.K.A. Picha invited Brittney and me to a bar called La Locomotora earlier. When she called, I looked at my watch and saw that it was only 2:30 in the afternoon. I was like, "Really? Who does that?" It just seemed a little less than classy if you know what I mean. I said yes of course! When Brittney and I got there Picha and her friend Carolina introduced us to some of their university friends. We got ... read more
