Too good Great pics. Sounds like quite the extensive gondola system they got going up there. I don't think I've ever taken a gondola where I couldn't see the end. That 5k ride to Italy sounds like quite the ride.
Can't believe you could see the Matterhorn from there. Very cool.
Too warm to ski on those glaciers? Do those gondolas act as ski lifts at all in the winter time or only there for tourists and what not?
You look like a French lumberjack in that flannel. I can see why it was only 5 Euros . . . .
How'd you stumble on those guys playing the alphorn? Filming a ricola commercial. I went to a show in Salzburg one night and they played a piece that Mozart or somebody had written for one of those things.
As you were hiking down the moutain did you keep everybody in time? Hup, Two, Three, Four . . .
or
I don't know what I've been told . . .
Eating pounds of cheese never gets old . . .
Or did everybody else do that and you walked 20 feet behind them and pouted because you didn't want to be seen with Gary? Remember that young Paulus?
Hopefully you took a pic of that jump seat compartment you sat in. From Prague to Vienna I had to sit in a six person train carfor about three or four hours, (full) while this German guy smoked on cigarettes like they were going out of style. That was quite an enjoyable train ride too.
Then from Salzburg to Frankfurt on my way to fly out, I got on the train at Salzburg at like 1:00 am, and either the heater was broken in our car or there was no heat. I had to curl up in the fetal position in my seat to conserve my heat and wear a couple of layers a clothes. Got a lot ot sleep that night . . .
Oh the train travel stories. Good luck on the rest of your trip. Maybe you'll have time to update this guy while you're out an about. Otherwise, emails work well too. Danke
Versailles Versailles a little different in mid June compared to mid February. We headed outside, had howling winds and blowing flurries in our face, took about 10 photos and headed back inside. Needless to say we didn't venture down to the other chateaus.
Hall of mirrors photo looks good too. They were doing some restoration on it when we were there, and they had one of those "here's what it looks like" canvas that has the stuff painted on it.
Hi yaa Paul! It is so fun to read about your experiences! We were in Roen and the chateau countryside is beautiful and picturesque-in Germany the farm homes are on the edge of town too and then look out on there fields! Probably a conservation measure. That french food is excellent-give it all a try-I love the wine stews-over noodles. Sure you will learn a few things too! Aunt Nancy
in the middle of the street, there's about a 2 foot wide area where you can stand. It's set up like that for the tourists i'm guessing, but you still get close to the cars whizzing by. I did buy a small print at the d'Orsay. I wanted one of the rouen cathedral for a two-in-one monet/rouen souvenir, but they didn't have any.
The stairs to the top of the arc sucked, it's a long ways up, but it's a nice view and was surprisingly not crowded.
Paris Brother Paul,
Too good on the Paris weekend. How'd you get that photo with you in the middle of the street? You just walk out to the middle and stand there like a dumb American tourist?
You buy any prints at the d'Orsay?
Glad you sniffed that something wasn't right about the Saint Chappel and asked someone. I recall having to walk up those small winding staircases.
Nikki and I were big fans of going to the top of the Arc de Triumph. We did it at night like you and it's neat to see the lights and hear the sounds.
Great post Great post brother paul.
When I was there we only had like an hour at the cemetary, and I wanted to get some sand from Omaha beach, so I ran down the pathway and filled up a film roll tube of sand. Wish I had more time there though.
The craters are pretty impressive up close too.
Good pic of the hedge. Couldn't believe all the big hedges that lined the fields over there.
No fast food in the smaller towns, don't really want it any. Haven't had mcdonald's yet...I'll take a sandwich over fast food any time.
The menu was 22 euros plus like 2 for the wine we split.
I'm not sure how exciting a blog of you playing on the internet would be...
Blog Maybe I should start a daily blog. Post some pics of my cube with papers on it.
Me looking busy, photo of my turkey sandwhich and jalapeno chips, apple, and treat for lunch.
View of the passing freight trains and the bums lounging around in the Gene Leahy mall area.
Lot of similarities between downtown Omaha and rural France.
Eric
Brother Paul Great photos, it's probably the camera . . . . . .
Your Bagnoles pic with the reflection of the town in the water is pretty neat.
Also good to see you taking pics of your food, will always help you recall that meal and maybe even how good (or not that good) it was
Glad to see your getting a chance to try a few different foods while you're there and aren't eating fast food (couldn't if you wanted to from the sounds of it) or just sticking with bread meat and cheese (not that that's a bad thing though from the sounds of it).
How much was your so-so three course meal?
It's probably no three-course meal at Applebee's for $9.99 . . . . .
Will all those tour buses and cars have to take the causeway out before the tide comes in, or is it protected even when the tide comes in?
It's just a plain coffee maker, but it's one scoop of coffee per cup plus one extra one for the machine, so it's strong.
Expresso all the way for coffee breaks in town - no real such thing as coffee here. cafe is express, you can get some milk in it, or you can get a cappucino.
coffee Brother Paul,
You mentioned you drink a lot of coffee over there. Do they use any special machine for the coffee you drink during your many coffee breaks? Or is it like a Mr. Coffee/Bunn type that we use just to make some coffee around the house?
When you go out do you drink just black coffee or mix it up with an espresso?
Yeah, it's a good pic, I like it. Better pick up some of that cheese and try it out. No French 15 yet, actually had to tighten the belt up a notch, maybe from the $20 in change in my pocket.
Too good Too good on the pics and video. Curious to see what you think of Mont St. Michelle. Would like to go back and spend a little more time in that area sometime.
I like the introspective thinker pose at the Rodin garden. I had to look at it twice before I figured out what you were doing. Too good. Too good.
Hope you don't put on that "French 15" eating all of those baguettes and cheeses and butter over there.
I think that Hy-Vee actually carries that Boursin cheese believe it or not (classin' it up), maybe we'll pick some up sometime. However the Hy Vee french baguette is not comparable . . . .
Those are some pretty good pics. Sounds like you're seeing a lot stuff, that's too good!
Well, let's see, I've got a ten kroner, a five kroner, a twenty kroner. No wait, that's another ten kroner. A fimty kroner? How much is that?
Yes, that is exactly right. Seems uninspiring, but it's good ham, some weird cheese, and an egg with some expresso to wash it down. I do plan to get back to paris for another weekend, maybe do Verseille, and see what I missed in Paris (orsay, st. chappelle, latin quarter). Hopefully the night pictures turned out ok. I may try and go up montparnarse during the day to get some views of the city.
That would be the one, I usually have some with dinner. I bought some belgian beer, Leffe. It's really different, not sure I like it, I'll have to try something else next time.
ham and cheese sandwhich I had to google a 'croque madame' Looks like a hot ham and cheese sandwhich with a fried egg on top, sounds tasty . . . . .
You know what's better than one croque madame? Two croque madame.
Too bad on the d'Orsay. Maybe if you get back to Paris you can check it out. Montmarte's neat and so was the Sacre Coure we thought.
Too good on having someone that speaks French. Beats having to say 'parle vous einglies" all the time.
Glad you went to the top of the Eiffel tower. Looks like you got some pre night photos and then after dark photos. The arc de triumph lit up in that night time pic is pretty neat.
As you've discovered lots of things to see and do in Paris. Hopefully you'll get a chance to get back there.
Is this a weekday, what day is this? Scarecrows in fields, huh? Did you see them while following the yellow brick road? I always knew you lived in some sort of fantasy world. Make sure you do some work!
"You can't put a limit on my cafe lattes, it says so right here. And I don't want to get dirty looks when I come in here. If I want a cafe latte, you give me a cafe latte. And if I have any problems I'm gonna get my lawyer Jackie Chiles down here and your gonna be in really big trouble."
Bustin Glad to see your posting on the travel blog and you were able to get their safely. Too good on crepes, I'm sure you're going to get spoiled with the food this summer.
"So what exactly would you say you do there?" Studying the effects coffee breaks have on university researchers? Can't wait to read that dissertation. Maybe that'll get published too . . . .
