For 4 years I have been planning to leave the UK and the Finance industry behind to embark on a trip of a lifetime. Things got very comfortable in the UK, with mine and my girlfriends jobs going well and paying well and the purchase of our first house together threatened to derail the dream. However, when the opportunity arose to work and live in Malaysia, we snapped it up and we are now 1 month into our new life in Kuala Lumpur. I am not going to write a blog about the trials and tribulations of moving abroad as this is a travel blog! However, I will provide a summary for those that may be considering it. The admin is surprisingly time consuming and sometimes stressful and the goodbyes are difficult. As we are both ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Bohol April 12th 2013

Im sure I saw somewhere on a poster that Bohol is the 12th largest island in the Philippines. I could quite easily google it right now to confirm my thoughts but where would all the fun be in that? The point of this thought is that I was expecting the drive back across Bohol from Anda, via the chocolate hills and the Tarsier sanctuary, to be quite a long one – considering it took the local bus 3 hours to cover the same distance in a straight line. To make sure our asses were covered we arranged to do this trip back to Tagbilaran the day before our flight. This was not needed (tip 1). If you want to arrange to go and visit the highly popular attractions of the Bohol interior then I would probably ... read more

For the second week of our holiday we decided to head over to Bohol as we have never experienced The Visayas. We were craving a bit of hard travel and a destination that was not too common so we settled on Anda at the far East of the Island. From El Nido this is how the travel went: Minibus to Puerto Princesa (5 hours) – Flight to Cebu (1 hour) – Tricycle to Port – Boat to Tagbilaran (2 hours) – Tricycle to local bus station – local bus to Anda (3.5 hours). I was quite impressed with the local bus service that we caught across the length of Bohol. It was relatively comfortable and it was amazingly cheap (100PHP each). There is not much information on Anda in the lonely planet guide and I was ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Palawan » El Nido April 1st 2013

It was time for my annual leave again and for the 2nd year in a row I have planned a “mini travelling” trip for me and my girlfriend. We had strategically timed our holiday to be around the Easter bank holidays and so we actually had 17 days to spend in the Philippines. This was my 3rd visit to the country I fell in love with in 2010 and my 2nd back to one of our favourite destinations – El Nido. Despite being warned by travellers and blogs all over the internet of the development and tourist boom in the area, we still could not resist the magnetic draw of this place. I had spent quite some time making sure our travel to the Northern tip of Palawan was as time efficient as possible. All of ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Terengganu » Perhentian Kecil April 8th 2012

Our flight with Airasia was changed so we did not get back to KL on the 8th (the 10th Anniversary of TB) until late evening and we had a flight early on the 9th. This meant we missed the festivities and the chance to meet famous bloggers. I hope everyone who attended had fun! We had decided on Perhentian Kecil because we wanted a bit of a busier island after the stillness of our previous Destination in Pulau Weh. Getting here was pretty simple – Plane to Kota Bharu, Taxi to Kuala Besut Port, Boat to Long Beach on Perhentian Kecil. We were unfortunate enough to be arriving during a massive downpour. This meant that we got soaked on the boat and once we pulled into the bay at long beach, we had to get picked ... read more

For the first time I am planning to go to Asia on a holiday. I have only ever been over there “travelling” before so I would normally not have as many plans but I have spent some time planning this trip to make sure it is maximised. It feels a bit strange doing it this way but I have a job and a flat and all that shizz now so there is no other option. After an overnight stop in KL we got on a short flight to Banda Aceh with AirAsia. There is an early morning flight and an afternoon flight at present. If you do not want to spend a night in Banda Aceh then you will need to take the morning flight – not that there is anything wrong with BA! We were ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sabah » Mabul August 8th 2010

After making the mistake of returning to KK from Kinabatangan (after leaving our luggage here) we decided to fly to Semporna to save some time. The flight was meaningless and hardly got off the ground before landing but it served a purpose, so it wasn’t meaningless. We hadn’t organised anything here so we managed to hitch a ride from the airport to Semporna. The bus dropped us off outside some stilted huts hovering over the sea. This place is full of them. Some of them HUGE. Anyway – this seemed like the tourist hub and there was a queue of people trying to book accommodation and trips to Sipidan and Mabul. We were not expecting this and this brought on a bout of panic in Laura especially after being told there was no accommodation left and ... read more

Taxi to bus terminal – bus to Kota Kinabatangan – minibus to jungle – DONE! It was as easy as it sounds. At the guesthouse in Kota Kinabalu we booked and paid for two nights at the nature lodge where we would embark on a number of jungle/river tours and be fed. The only thing we had to organise was the bus to Kinabatangan and this was simple from the bus terminal. There were many to choose from and the costs vary depending on the comfort you desire. The drive was long but stunning. We passed through the Kruger mountain range and were treated to breathtaking views of the beast of Borneo – Mount Kinabalu. Obviously, having already paid we were a little worried that we would arrive in Kota Kinabatangan and be left stranded after ... read more

We had been recommended Lucy’s guesthouse by Andy and Emma (who we stayed with in El Nido) and so we had formulated a very simple plan for when we exited the airport: 1. Find a taxi 2. Tell the driver the address of Lucy’s guesthouse 3. Reserve our room at the guesthouse and enjoy our first night in KK. The plan sounds tough – but part 1 and 2 were simple, which is a credit to the transport system here in KK. However, part 3 was a failure. Lucy did not have a room until tomorrow – so we reserved that. Every other place we tried was full until finally we found a nice enough place (albeit quite expensive) pretty much next to Lucy’s. By this time it was getting late and we were tired – ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Palawan » Coron July 27th 2010

“Hello, we want to book the boat over to Coron please.” “Ok, that will be 2,200 pesos each.” “I’m sorry, we said we wanted to book the BOAT across?” “Yes, that will be 2,200 pesos each.” “Are you serious?” “2,200 pesos please.” We were in El Nido in low season – this meant the only boat option was ridiculously expensive because they were nowhere near full capacity. To be fair – the boat was quite nice. It was an extra large Banka and because there were only 6 of us – we could all lay down on the benches! Everyone fell asleep apart from me. I am a big boat lover (not in a weird way) so I went out and sat right at the front for about 2 hours. It is well worth doing this ... read more
