I'm doing my best to see as much of this world as I can while I'm still young(ish). Teaching in Korea for two years so far has allowed me to travel through a lot of countries in Asia I never would have thought to visit. It's been amazing so far, and I can't wait for the next adventure.

Leavetakings I woke up as our new friends were rustling around the hotel room. I'm not usually a very deep sleeper, and they had to step over me as they were getting ready for the day anyways. We went down to eat the complimentary breakfast while the band, taking full advantage of the safe, comfortable and quiet environment, slept. It was one of the swankiest breakfast buffets I've ever seen at a hotel. The huge courtyard, with the soft burbling of the fountain from the entryway providing soothing background noise made a perfect atmosphere to enjoy some scrambled eggs that were probably beaten in some sort of industrial sized paint bucket. After eating, we went back up to wake the boys. Everyone showered, packed up and said our most sincere thanks and goodbyes to the ladies. ... read more

Adventures in Tulsa The floor at George's place provided a much more restful night of sleep than any so far. To keep it in perspective, the 3 previous nights were spent 1)freezing 2)fearing a meth induced stabbing and 3)quietly pondering all the previous guests who had slept on Misty Matthew's musty old couch and what they may have left behind. With that noted, I'm not sure if the carpeted floor with a thin layer of dog hair covering it was particularly comfortable, but it was relatively so. We said thanks and bye to George, and hit the road for the 7-8 hour drive to Tulsa. The drive was pretty uneventful aside from Mike and I taking a nice lead in the Adam Rubs America Radio Contest. My Metallica pick and Mike's Foo Fighters were both ... read more

Before the Show When we woke up on Misty Matthews' various couches, we looked around at the disaster scene surrounding us. It was pretty bad when we had arrived the night before, but the extra beer bottles and cans, plus the natural detritus left behind by a group of wandering 20-somethings. We all took this wonderful opportunity to get clean again. Miraculously, Steve also decided that this would be a prime time for his first shower in at least 3 days (and we're talking 3 days of car travel and hard rocking ). He came out in his boxers, air drying himself since apparently Misty didn't have the foresight to prepare guest towels for her random weekend encounters with strange bands. We said thanks to our gracious hosts, and made moves to the van. We... read more

Before the Show It's always a good morning when you actually wake up after falling asleep in a small hotel room with a meth head in a bed rather than a tub full of ice. I don't how extensive the black market organ trade in Arkansas is, but I wouldn't put anything past these people. I went out to the van to wake the boys and tell them about the shenanigans of last night. Since I was the only one who had a chance to shower the night before, Adam, Mike and Chris took their opportunity to get clean. Steve, for reasons incomprehensible to the rest of us, opted to remain in his current olfactory-molesting condition. He smelled like a Tijuana port-a-potty. He smelled like a Frenchman rolling in dog feces. He smelled like Liz ... read more

Hot Springs, Arkansas Due to a fairly rough night, despite my best efforts at waking the group up (a few mumbled repetitions of "Guys... guys we need to get up" before falling back to an uncomfortable slumber) we ended up setting out a couple of hours past the ideal departure time. No worries though, as a quick phone call to the night's venue, Maxine's, cleared everything up in a few minutes. Adam took the helm and drove for many hours while we kept our ears open for our bands to play on the radio. Hot Springs is a surprisingly bustling town considering its population of around 40,000 people. Its big claim to fame is being the boyhood home of former president Bill Clinton. This was exciting news, as perhaps this was an environment that fostered and ... read more

Leavetakings Everyone was meeting at the practice space on the north side of Chicago. Having been out of the country for a couple years, I hadn't had a chance to meet the new(est) guitarist, Adam or the interim bassist Steve. We started loading up some equipment in the van according to the drummer's detailed instructions. Having known Mike for 17 years at this point, it came as a shock to me to see him that focused and organized. I guess he had been saving himself for Verona Red all this time. A few words on the setup of the van: Mike had bought a van that had 2 full rear benches. He ripped the last bench out, and built a huge wooden frame that fit inside the back. On top of the wooden frame there ... read more

Asia » Cambodia » North » Siem Reap » Knar January 16th 2011

Siem Reap The road to Siem Reap was worth the trip in and of itself. A constantly blending and weaving of cars from one side of the road to the other with nary a painted line to direct drivers for the entirety of the recently paved main national highway of Cambodia. After the first few hairy minutes, I just accepted that I was in the car and there was very little I could do to control what was happening so I just relaxed. Despite the fact that there was minimal leg room, and the people in front of us had the seat before the stairway down to the bathroom (and thus tons of leg room themselves) they felt the need to recline their seats all the way. This made the ride extremely uncomfortable, particularly for ... read more

Leaving Korea I decided to take the thirty minute walk to Ski's apartment rather than take a bus or taxi, despite being loaded down with a fairly heavy backpack. The night wasn't too cold, and I knew I would be cramped up in public transportation enough over the next few weeks anyways. I went up to his apartment, where he was busy finishing the last of his packing, dropped my coat and gloves off, and we proceeded to the bus stop in sweatshirts, despite the freezing cold temperatures and the icy wind buffeting us. The buses were scheduled to come every half hour, so we weren't too worried about it. Of course, the bihourly bus showed up 45 minute later, and we were soon on our way to the airport. A short while later, Ski ... read more
