I, naturally, woke up early to make the most of being on Rottnest as soon as I wake up. It would probably be quite nice to spend an extended period of time on Rottnest because although the accommodation is relatively expensive, you can bring across basically as much stuff as you like and there is a full kitchen. After dropping of my key, I headed out for the day's birding to thoroughly bird the Western side of the island and the mixture of rocky coastline, lakes, and heath with patches of remnant woodland. A surprising bird sighting was a Sacred Kingfisher which I wasn't expecting because they mainly migrate North at this time of year. Although the lakes were extremely full and just about bursting their banks with the unusually large amount of rain over the ... read more

I've been quiet for the last few days since the one Perth post a few days ago but I've done no real birding since then and have just been resting with family. The extended family who live in Perth as well as my brother and parents who have also been here. My brother and parents got to Perth when I was in Darwin so have spent quite a while here, and they have strange responsibilities like going back to work before the end of the month and my brother has to go back to school. School, imagine that. I don't do that sort of stuff anymore. So my parents and brother are flying back to Europe today, with their flight this evening, so this morning I got them to drop me off at the Fremantle Jetty ... read more

I’ve used the word ‘chilling’ quite a lot in this blog. I don’t know why, I don’t particularly like the phrase to be honest, but it’s just one that I seem to employ quite regularly when I’m too lazy to be more eloquent. Anyway, I’ve used it as the title today, because it’s winter here and relatively far south so it does get fairly cold, easily into the single digits and up into the hills it almost approaches freezing during the nights. Although it’s actually warmer than I was expecting and it’s not much colder than the Atherton Tablelands near Cairns which are cold because of the high altitude. It’s rather like a British autumn here, with daily rain at the moment that’s mostly drizzle and comparable temperatures to a British autumn. I’ve been in Perth ... read more

I checked out of the hostel in the morning and left my main pack in their luggage room so I could go out for the day before my evening flight. I decided to walk into the city along the full length of the esplanade and bird along the way. At the very top of the esplanade there was a pair of Beach Stone Curlews resting under some mangroves until some idiot children scared them off. Being a Sunday there were lots of those about. Once I reached the bottom of the Esplanade I decided to visit a zoo type thing I hadn't been for o yet: the Cairns Zoom and Wildlfie Dome. This is a small zoo theme park combination place located in a small glass dome on the roof of the Cairns Casino in the ... read more

I managed to get up for morning birding this morning which was nice because there was a lot of bird activity despite the fact that it was absolutely freezing cold (11 degrees) although my cold is definitely getting better because I was able to keep warm somewhat (as would normally be the case for me even down into the single digit negatives). 11 degrees is quite cold for a tropical rainforest though. (Well, almost tropical) I didn't get up to see the lunar eclipse because the moon was up all night scaring off all th hundreds of pygmy possums that would have otherwise come out and then the moon had the gall to expect me and look at it. Selfish and self-entitled that moon. Does anyone really like it? All it does is sit there not ... read more

I had intended to wake up for early morning birding because I am right in birding habitat right away, but having ended fairly late last night and my cold, as colds generally are, being worse in the morning I couldn't get up first thing. The birding doesn't actually seem much better in the morning though since this time of year is the coldest it gets and it seems that some birds become more active in the day. The main reason for getting up early was just to have more time birding since getting out late loses a lot of time but with the birding right there, there was no time lost getting to the right spots. I've also seen basically all the things at this point. And I don't just mean all my targets, I've seen ... read more

We checked out of our Atherton accommodation in the late morning as our final two nights in the tablelands would be in a different place at Chambers Wildlfie Lodge at Lake Eacham which is just down the road. The whole tableland is a very small area. Before going on though, I had to buy some warm clothes from Atherton. I will be borrowing warm clothes from relatives in Perth and I hardly brought any warm clothes at all since I usually am ok in warm weather clothes even down to single digit temperatures but I seem to have lost my temperature regulation ability with this illness so I needed some warmer clothes. We then headed on towards Lake Eacham with a brief stop at the Curtain Fig and then a longer stop at Lake Barrine. The ... read more

I got up this morning for the dawn chorus because although I was feeling coldy and I had seen all of the usual target species, I wanted to make the most of being in such nice habitat at dawn. I went down to look for the platypus because I thought it might be active in the morning and I would like to get a picture in daylight, but no such luck. O did, however find a particularly wonderful mammal out and about in the morning: a Yellow-footed Antechinus. After check out time, we headed on to our next stop in the town of Atherton on the Atherton Tablelands proper. I think this was the longest drive of the trip but it wasn't really very long at all and the whole tableland area is not very large ... read more

We headed off from Mossman in the late morning to go to our next stop, a very short 25km drive back towards Mount Lewis where I had been the last two nights. I had managed to persuade my family to have a one night stay and a place called Kingfisher Park Birders Lodge and the sort of place it is should be evident from the name. It's a small property with a patch of rainforest with lots of birds (and some mammals) in it and a creek at the bottom that is home to a platypus. They have the showiest Pied Monarchs that I've ever seen, several bird tables about that attract finches and doves and honeyeater, and normally resident Pittas but apparently recent relatively cold weather means they're not about at the moment. The owner ... read more

There isn't really any birding to do in the area immediately around the accommodation and my family doesn't exactly get up early so we weren't out until half the day had gone at 10:30. This is what makes travelling on your own so much better, except of course I wouldn't be able to do this without a car. So they wanted to use what was left of the evening to visit Port Douglas which is a nearby town and I decided that the best thing for me to do would be to be dropped off at Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas on the way in which is just on the edge of town. This is a zoo in case their obscure name doesn't make that clear. I would also like to note at this point that all ... read more
