So, fine, I'll subscribe now Oops. Haven't been keeping up with your blog. I was never good with that. I'll refrain from saying the ultra cheesy, obvious, or cliche things that I usually say as it'd be embarassing to express myself in such a way in a post. Take it all in, Bern. You are indeed lucky.
And get over the lack of picture postability. :)
Hey Bern Hey Bern,
First of all, your brother is a goddamn idiot for checking the wrong blog.
Anyway, I'm glad to see you're well and productive... or well, in any case. :D Yes, please put the picture of your housemates up because it would be important. For, um, context.
Seriously, though, I know what you're saying about the guilt thing. Obviously -- I'm your brother. But you're there NOW, trying to make a difference in the best way you currently know how. Don't think about the guilt, just think about doing good work and helping others. Remember that people who have suffered don't wish suffering on others. Unless they're dicks.
Re: PPASA I realize we have our differences (duh!) but I didn't think this was one of them. I seem to recall not so long ago you wouldn't have set foot in a place like that. And it wasn't a casual thing, you were quite adamant about it.
Not to make a direct comparision, there is a difference in the degree of evil, but just remember the Hamas sponsors hospitals and schools. This in no way negates the rest of the things they did. (In the open city of the International Lease Zone in Shanghai of the '30's, gangsters who plied trade in opium, gambling, and prostitution did the same sort of thing and gained much respectability, at least in the eyes of some.)
I wrote the above still thinking you feel the same way about "Planned Parenthood." If not, please ignore the comments after the first sentence.
Wow Bernie-
Reading you comments brought me back to Ghana. Thank you. I understand what you mean, and just remember it is rollercoaster that you ride and then it ends. And once its over, you wanna get back in line to go again.
Are parents allowed to comment? Don't look gift horses in the mouth. If life is actually nicer than expected once in a while, by glad.
I had an opposite problem which affected me for years. When I came to the U.S., I had expected ***HOLLYWOOD!*** and what I got was Watts. Honestly, I wouldn't have minded if I had your "problem" instead. :-)
Re: Procrastinating Around the World Hey Bear, glad you are posting! Cape Town sounds fascinating (you're not in connecticut, right? being the highly gifted individual I am, i got confused.) look forward to any public health things you decide to post on. going along with Resh's post, any public AIDS info out there? Just finished reading a report on the confusing/contradictory information, but without being there hard to know what is actually on the ground. Resh, I hope the people in the picture were rallying for more awareness/less stigma. huge problem down there, still a ton of reluctance to discuss HIV...
ps good to know you were in Heathrow and not wandering around London, I was a bit nervous but then realized it was Wednesday so you would probably be okay.
Re: Procrastinating Around the World Bernie! So glad to read your thoughts on the trip so far. I would love to hear more about the community health projects y'all will be working on. Do you feel disconnected from day-to-day life in CT, or do you have opportunities to get out and explore neighborhoods and interact with people?
I just read an interesting article on BBC stating that SA does indeed have the largest number of people living with HIV (they previously thought it was India):
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/4672057.stm
There is a picture accompanying the article that kinda looks like people are cheering this fact, like 'yeah! we beat india!' ...or maybe this is just my twisted mind. ;) Anyway, hope you're well and take care.
Hi everyone...if you're here, you probably know me, and you know why I'm in Cape Town, South Africa for a month. If you don't, I'm going with NYU to work on and learn about community health and HIV/AIDS. I'll miss you all, but I'll be back in August! Enjoy reading, e-mail me and keep me posted. Peace and love,
Bernie Bear... full info
