Hey Becca,
Really enjoyed reading your South Africa blog. I have always wanted to go there. My blog is looking for some good travel photos. If you have the time, check us out dirtyhippies.blogspot.com
Continued fun on your travels,
Heather
This is a great school! I taught at this school in 2008 for my student teaching. I miss it so much, everyone was just so incredible!! I taught art their with Ms. Uys... I dont know if she is still there but if she is tell her hello for me.

I have witnessed it!!! Thank you for your entry Becca. I started reading your comment and thought....another European thinking they can change Africa and probably teaching at small black school and giving the wrong impressions. Only to see the pictures!!! The horror!!! I had the privilege to attend a white school and realized it difficult for them to think outside the box. Always having to ask a million question for even the simplest tasks.
Goodluck...i think its from year of indoctrination from parents...the circle continues
You'll have to bring me a box of Ouma Rusks back. I have a recipe but I haven't tried it out yet. We can put that on our 'to do list' over the summer.
Tell the old farm boy to be more open-minded. South African opinions of Americans are very skewed, as are Americans of other cultures. His confrontation on the issues says way more about him than it does about Americans. Until you actually experience another culture, you simply cannot have an accurate opinion. (my two cents)
Glad you enjoyed Port Alfred. I haven't seen my aunt and uncle in years. Can't wait to introduce Brian to them at Christmas. Have a great weekend
That is definitely a huge pineapple! And the zebras are so cute! Also, the beach looks gorgeous, and I see you have a nice tan starting! Better than here, where it's icy with a windchill of -1 degree.
In other news, did you hear Captain Phil from Deadliest Catch died?? I guess I have to watch all my backup DVR episodes in honor of him now...
I love seeing all these pictures! I can't wait for more!
I hope that even though you have to break down simple instructions that the literacy/spelling skills are better than you saw in Lexington! Can't wait to hear more. :)
I love reading your take on everything in South Africa, it's so refreshing.
I'm inspired by your adaptability in the classroom, what a fantastic teacher!
You should have told my dad that he would have good teeth as well, if he didn't SMOKE!!! (had to chuckle at that one).
It's snowing here again so it makes it hard to look at your beach pictures.
Looking look forward to reading your next post.
Hi Again Hi Becca! Sounds like you are adjusting well. I know your experience there will continue to get richer and richer as the days go by. You're going to be all toasty tan when you get back to the States! So glad you are enjoying your experience. Take care, Mimi
school I love hearing that some of your school situation is like mine! I am also finding it difficult to fill out a time-table where I can meet a class each time it meets. I hope you find your feet soon within the school and at the house. Good luck with the first weeks! I can't wait to hear more stories!
thank you I am so glad you created this blog. It sounds absolutely awesome and I hope it turns out to be all that you had hoped (and more). Now I can live vicariously through you!!! Enjoy yourself!
Hello! It sounds like your student teaching is off to a good start! I love that you get tea during the day and that you are in a class in half English and half Afrikaans. I can't wait to hear more about your experience in South Africa!
Hi Hi Becca, So glad you are adjusting. I sure admire you for it. I won't write too long as I don't want to take up your internet time (and I will try to appreciate my unlimited usage more after hearing what you go through!).
Good luck on your first day teaching!
Mimi
Becca,
I'm so glad things are looking up. I know it seems daunting at first but you'll cherish the opportunity to experience a different way of life and appreciate the luxuries you have in the USA. I's so excited to read about your daily activities and I hope you'll find the time to blog frequently. We all miss you.
P.S
Now that your appetite is back, you must go to 'Jimmy's prawns' restaurant. I'm sure it's still around. It's down beach road, opposite the Oceanarium. You can look it up in the phonebook or just ask my mom or Markas. You and the other Cost students should go there for lunch, LOVE FRESH seafood.
I'm so glad you made it there safely, and that you are getting into the swing of things. Since you can't upload pictures often, I expect to see a comprehensive iPhoto slideshow when you get home!
I understand Do you know the reason that the GIG usage is important is that if you run over a certain allottment you pay dearly even with a normally connected internet site. Perhaps the other instructors need to know that. We also talked about sunburned people being the "fresh ones" in other words they had just arrived recently. Do you like fish? I think the seafood in S. Africa is awesome.
