When we arrived in Bali the cloud of sad thoughts was upon us....were we really to leave Asia in just 10 days? It was kind of hard to believe, considering that we have spent past 11 months exploring different corners of that vast continent. We still had a lot of places to see on our list but no time left to see it all. Have we miscalculated the amount of time we needed to complete this part of our trip? Maybe we overstayed too long in some places because we liked it there so much. Nevertheless we had to make a decision what really we were going to do and we opted for 'no rush - no fuss' type of travels. After being dropped by the agency at the ferry terminal we hopped on a ferry ... read more

Usually people visit Bromo on organized tour from Yogya which is actually quite inexpensive and works well. As we decided to go to Karimunjawa we had to get there the hard way. People in Jepara were extremy nice and pointed us into the right direction. All we had to do was to take several ‘sardine can lookalike’ buses to do the route: Jepara –> Kudus -> Surabaya -> Probolinggo -> Cemero Lawang(at the mouth of Bromo). It took us almost 24h and we arrived just for sunset at 5am which was just stunning. We had to pay a little extra (maybe 2$ more) to be taken up the mountain at this time but there was no point of waiting till 7 am. All we wanted to do at this point was sleep. We stayed in some ... read more

So we were counting days to the end of our Asian adventure now. We had our flight to Sydney booked in around 3 weeks time and still had to visit Java, Bali, Lombok and Gilis. No regrets as it was worth it to stay in Sulawesi for 4 weeks ;-) We did not want to rush and for some reason we kind of already knew that we would end up skipping Bali. After seeing all those magnificent paradise spots we just did not think Bali would work for us. Nevertheless, we thought we give it a try if we find time. We flew from Manado to Surabaya and went straight to the long distance bus terminal and hopped on a bus to Yogyakarta (68,000R/7$ including dinner). We had no idea that arriving at night would be ... read more

Bolilanga = > Fadhila = > Malenge = > Gorontalo = > Manado It is not the first time. It has happened before. We researched and we planned and yet we ended up doing completely different thing anyway. Why? Because we met some travelers on the way who told us stories that altered our plan. Some French family in Poyalisa/Bomba was just one of those instances. Sarah, Bas and us planned to go to Kadidiri after Bomba and we even booked bungalows for a specific date. Then we wanted to go to the remote Malenge Island after which we would have traveled back to Wakai (port very close to Bomba) for the ferry to the other side of Sulawesi. The family told us that they just did the trip but other way round and that we ... read more

We all remember summer camps when we were kids right? They were full of fun days at the beach, swimming, playing and having fun. They got even better when we were teenagers as we could party, drink and smoke which was like breaking bad in a way. However the most important element of the memories we have from those days is people. People we had never met before and had nothing to do with initially but could not imagine better holidays without them at the end of the term. Summer friends we swore to be in touch with forever and holiday romances we thought were going to last. Now we know that it was the place that made us friends and that we share the memories of. I never thought 30-year old us could feel that ... read more

Majority of people who have traveled for extended period of time know that it is hard sometimes to find the excitement anymore. It can happen especially when you spend too much time in the same region of the world. I guess we got to that point in Borneo where we were so fed up with things and people that we seriously had to try hard to stay motivated to go on. We were very relieved though when we landed in Sulawesi as we knew for fact that we would love this place. From the airport we had no trouble getting to the center of Makassar by public bus (15,000/1,5$ each) and again we did some walking around to find suitable accommodation. Then and there Makassar surprised us. We walked in to probably 5 or 6 hotels ... read more

Off the beaten path in Borneo Our journey to Derawan was interesting and frustrating in the same time. We must admit that it was very exciting to be faced with all the struggles on the way that you don’t encounter often in South East Asia i.e. huge language barriers, lack of local transport, lack of budget accommodation etc. We left Sandakan knowing that it would take us many days to reach our final destination but we were absolutely fine with it. The bus to the border town of Tawau took long 9h instead of 4 because we had engine problem, then breaks problem and then tire problem. In the end we had to be transferred to another bus to be ... read more

Kota Kinabalu & Sepilok & Sukau & Sandakan The flight to Kota Kinabalu was nice and smooth and we were really amazed by standards offered by Air Asia. We were more or less expecting Ryaner kind of experience so that was a nice surprise. As it was late in the evening we had no other choice but take a taxi to the centre (30 RMB/10$) and as usual we embarked on a hostel search. We finally settled for less nice but more affordable Sunset Lodge (40RMB/13$ for basic room with shared bathroom). We were so tired that we just did a quick stop at the food market and went to bed. Asia » Philippines » Palawan » El Nido July 5th 2012

After the unfortunate visit to Boracay we flew to Palawan hoping to spend some wonderful time over there. Yes, we were hoping as El Nido is also quite a popular tourist destination in Philippines and we were not sure what changes tourism has made to this place. Fortunately, El Nido is not the easiest place to reach unless you can splash on a charter plane so that already narrows the number of visitors down. During our travels we have learnt that any place that takes time to reach does not attract tour groups but different class of visitors therefore is worth a visit. We decided to stay overnight in Puerto Princesa even though there were charter minivans and night buses available. It was quick decision after we made friends with a friendly Argentinean guy – Patrick ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Boracay June 27th 2012

I do realize that we said we mostly wanted to see the less-touristy places but we could not help to wonder what, considered by many ‘the most beautiful' beach in the Philippines would look like, so we decided to check it out. The flight was comparably expensive as they only use the small charter planes to go Caticalan but we booked it either way. When we arrived at the island we decided to walk to the Station 3 area where all the budget accommodation was and somehow (even though people were saying it was impossible in Boracay) we managed to find a nice bungalow for 500P only (Bora Bora Inn). We already got the impression that this place was simply spoiled by tourism as we could not even walk for a minute without being stopped by ... read more
