TO US THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PLACE IN CHINA When still in Kunming we found out that there are two daily buses going to YuanYang – one in the morning and one in the afternoon. We got up really early, checked out and went for a local bus that was supposed to take 1,5h to get to the station. When we finally reached it we were astonished with number of people queuing for tickets. We were almost sure that all the tickets had been already sold out. To our surprise we were not too late. The only difference was that the morning bus was not going at all this day and we had to take the 4 pm one. It was less than ideal as we would reach YuanYang around midnight. On the other hand we did ... read more

We made it to Kunming before noon which gave us opportunity to admire constantly changing landscape on the way. Suddenly we could not see any rock formations and lush green fields but dry earth and desert plants. The mountain range in Yunnan is amazing and it kind of feels like spring is always there. Kunming town is located nearly 1900m above the sea level and temperatures are always mild and pleasurable. We did not intend to stay too long in Kunming as we only wanted to get our Vietnamese visa sorted over there. We took a local bus from a train station to the lake area and walked around to find some place to stay. We wanted to stay in Cloudland Youth Hostel but some guy we met told us there was even better place by ... read more

We made it again to Guilin and we already knew where to go to look for further transport. We went to the same sales women as before (who was acting like a ticket office for local buses) and we got tickets for the next bus (18Y/1,8£). Buses are leaving every 10 min so there is no rush at all. In the end Yangshuo is one of the most popular destinations served by Guilin bus companies. Unfortunately weather did not improve and it was still pouring down with rain ;-( We were really tired after our 'Dazai adventure'and we just wanted to get to Yangshuo and rest. We agreed that is we found a guesthouse with nice warm rooms and 24h hot water we would stay for longer just to simply rest. The scenery around Guilin is ... read more

… Literally Getting Lost .... We arrived in Guilin early in the morning and according to LP just in time to catch the forward bus to Longji National Park. We did not book any accommodation so we were not sure if they would have place for us on that bus but with the winter season upon China we were pretty confident it wont be full. We tried few buses with no positive result until we stumbled across tourist agent who told us when and where the bus was leaving from. The main bus station seems to be located just in front of the Train Station in Guilin which was great news for us. We bought tickets for the bus from the same agent (40Y each) even though she was trying to charge us more than necessary. ... read more

Hong Kong for New Year's - that just seems like such a great idea. Being in this particular city that we always wanted to visit made us all excited. We could not wait what the New Year's celebrations would be like, what the atmosphere of the place would be like and how we would feel about HK in general. We did realise though that with great experience of HK came higher spending so we decided to make a stopover in Guangzhou before crossing the border. It was not as exciting as HK but we used this place to see some of the places around including Kaiping's Diaolou that I mentioned in the previous blog. Guangzhou is just one of the very modern cities in China. Based at the gateway to Hong Kong it does attract a ... read more

When we visited Shanghai Museum we saw the minority section and we liked it so much. It got us really interested in different tribes and minorities leaving across China and we scanned our guidebook for any information we could find on near by villages. We were lucky enough to just be on the way to Fujian and Guangdong provinces where two of very interesting 'tribes' have their settlements. Hakka tribes leave across Fujian and Guangdong provinces. There are many clusters of Tulous - structures made of earth, rice and bamboo – that are ancient equivalent of modern apartment blocks. They all belong to UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tulou is usually a large, enclosed and fortified building, between three and five stories high and housing up to 80 families. Smaller interior buildings are often enclosed by these ... read more

Taking it easy for few days We got to Shanghai....cause we ought to. How could we avoid it when in China? Even if we don't like big cities we really wanted to check out the atmosphere of Shanghai. The train ride from Suzhou was short and sweet at 312 km/h and it cost only 40Y/4£. Just for the experience of the bullet train ride it is worth to try ;-) Marie was coming along with us (her final destination) and she already had a hostel to recommend. We stayed in Mingtown Hiker Hostel just a walking distance from the Bund and People's Square. Location wise it was perfect. The hostel itself was pretty good as well (40Y/p/night) with great modern showers, washing facilities and nice lounge/bar area. There was an element of constant cold in the ... read more

Don't really remember why we put Nanjing on our initial plan in China. Familiar name maybe, indicating to us importance of the place? We had heard about this place before for sure. Then when we read the history of the place in LP and imagined beautiful canals of the Yangtze River we got really interested in it. 'Venice of the East' sounds really appealing, doesn’t it? Then we discovered there were many more beautiful canal towns in this province so it happened to be a pretty amazing week for us. Everything is free in Nanjing We checked-in to our riverside youth hostel and we went for a stroll. Really liked what we could see. Laid back town, canals and cute bridges everywhere, markets and food stalls. We also discovered some cheap shops selling accessories, electronics and ... read more

In Pingyao we met a nice French lady named Maria and she told us about the Luoyang caves she was just going to. Even though we already visited Yungang Grottoes in Datong we decided to check this place out. Besides, Luoyang is a base place for visiting Shaolin Temples so we were quite happy to stop there. We choose International Youth Hostel in the Old Town, quite far away from the train station. We just thought there would be far more charm in this place then in new town development. Luoyang is a rather big town, however transport system is very efficient so we had few bus options to the Old Town and were dropped by the main square where Hostel was located. This hostel was not listed in Lonely Planet and maybe we should have ... read more

'We are not staying here for long' I said to Tomek when we arrived at Xi'an train station. The minute we exited the station and I saw big city buildings and crowds of people I did not like it at all. It was almost like a shock to me after beautiful and peaceful Pingyao. We got picked up by our hostel – Han Tang Inn – and we went straight for breakfast. We were starving and I really craved for some good coffee. We had to remind ourselves again that we should not have spent so much on English Breakfast especially when there was street food just outside of our hostel. Han Tang Inn is unquestionably the best hostel we stayed in so far (40Y/4£ each, thanks Jon for recommending it to us!). Just renovated, new ... read more
