It took thousands of years but really started to advance in the 17th century. European explorers sailed to the coasts of Australia and release 1,500 people to settle. Around half of these people were convicts. By the end of 1868, the stopped shipping convicts to Australia as a form of punishment. However, a total of 160,000 men and women came to Australia as convicts. The convicts were essentially the people who built Australia up from nothing and made it to be the country it is today.
