After the joys of Easter Island we resumed our march North towards Bolivia. Easter Island was a spur of the moment trip, but it gave us the opportunity to head up through Northern Chile something we weren´t planning to do. Firt stop from Santiago was La Serena, a beach resort about 7 hours north of the Chilean capital. Its the second oldest town in Chile (we haven´t worked out what the oldest is) and has quite a colonl feel. That though wasn´t the reason we headed there. That part of Chile is one of the best places in the world to look at stars bcause of the minimal amont of light pollution and minimal amout of dust in he atmosphere in that region. Hence the cellestial objects are pretty clear and countries from all over the ... read more

Easter Island was a spur of the moment decision, inspired by Wendy´s cheap flights, we made in Puerto Natales. We knew that going there would mean something would have to give and it probably means that Venezuela is out of the question, but in keeping with the Discovery Channel and National Geopgraphic theme which has tended to dominate our decisions of late Easter Island fitted. Well the flight over started pretty well (aside from Ann trying to smuggle her Swiss army knife onto a plane........it may be South America but some things are not meant to fly!) with the three of us getting a very lovely upgrade to Business Class on our flight over.....shame it was a morning flight because Champagne is a struggle and rum was just not going to happen! Though it was a ... read more

Well after hanging around for a few more days on Puerto Natales we made the move to start our trek back to BA and beyond. In El Calafate we had some decisions to make and the four of us (Eamo and Wendy as well ) decided that we´d spend a day at the Periot Moreno Glacier and then head to El Chalten to do at least a day´s walking to see Cerro Fotz Roy and Cerro Torres. Porito Moren Glacier is probably the most famous of all the Patgonian Glaciers, mainly because its the one everyone sees on the Discovery Channel....you know the one with the big pieces of ice calving and crashing into the lake.....yes the glacier actualy does do this, though you have to be patient. We perched ourselves in a reasonable spot, choosing ... read more

South America » Chile » Magallanes » Torres del Paine March 1st 2009

Well after the intense hiking of about 10 minutes per day in Antarctica we decided the warm up was over and it was time to advance to the hiking terraine of Torres del Paine National Park, Patagonia. No penguins or whales here but the scenery with snow, rock and ice capped mountains bottomed with lakes, glaciers, even some icebergs and flamingos it was impressive enough in its own right. Despite the fact that hardly anyone actually lives permanently in the 181,000 hectare national park, I doubt it was more than an hour at any time of the day that we didn´t see another set of hikers passing us (working in the opposite direction OR just over taking us...well Gordon at least stayed with Ann, walking at her snail´s pace for most of the way whilst the ... read more

Antarctica » Antarctica February 14th 2009

Well we´re back! We survived two storms on the Drake (called the Drake Shake), being hunted by a Leopard Seal, barked at by a Fur Seal, a mini Tsunami caused by a glacier calving and being covered in penguin shit (well Gordon shouldn´t roll around in it then.....)! All in all it was wonderful, the landscapes, the icebergs, the animals (although we only saw 2 types of penguins - storms at sea made us miss a landing) and even the rough weather all made for a memorable trip down south (it´s rather exciting standing on the bridge and watching the waves crash over the boat and onto the window - that is 3 floors up from sea level!). The trip started a little slowly after the Professor Multanovesky (our boat) had a little engine trouble so ... read more

Day 3 of Ruta 40 was a short hop from El Chalten to El Calafate. El Calafate is where we catch our flight down to Ushuaia. Our day in El Chalten was not to be wasted and it was with some relief that, as dawn broke, for the first time in 3 days we we weren´t up before it! Our previous 2 starts had been 6.30 & 7am, so it was with some relief that our excursion to the Viedma Glacier left at 8am. By this stage we were used to the Agentinian schedule of adding 30 mins to a scheduled departure and managed to squeeze in a breakfast at the hostel in time for 8.30. The Viedma Glacier is in the Parc Nacional de Glaciers, which is in both Chile and Argentina. The Viedma glacier ... read more

Aaagghhh Ruta 40.........how do words describe it? Ok, I admit it was my (Gordon) perverse love of road trips which made me first suggest the Ruta 40 option from Bariloche to El Calafate to Eamo and Ann. There is something magical about derserted roads and being in the middle of literally nowhere. Eamo wasnt convinced and thought that the cheaper coastal route option, though it meant an overnight in Commodorio Rividavia (an industrial/oil town) would get us there slightly quicker. In the end the promise of 2 nights accomodation, side trips to Cueva del las Manos and the Viedma Glacier swayed us towards Ruta 40, the dusty inland route. The route itself from Bariloche to El Chalten is around 1200 km. The prospect of a couple of days on a bus was one which we didnt ... read more

Now we undertook the expensive alternative trip back to Argentina........the Cruce Del Lagos......(Crossing the lakes). Expensive but worth every peso. The views were amazing and to be travelling on mostly catamarans, with a bit of bus made a very welcome change to the previous 3 weeks of travel. The only slight put-off to the trip was we had been transported into an American retirees´ travel tour bus (they being the majority of people who can afford these luxuries), so we felt we´d lost a bit of our adventurous explorer status (but do not fear we more than made up for this with our next trip!). Cruce de Lagos leaves Puerto Montt by bus pasing through the town of Puerto Varis.....where the majority of the people travelling got on. The bus then heads into a National Park, ... read more

South America » Chile » Los Lagos » Puerto Montt February 3rd 2009

Puerto Montt is a town about 1000 km´s south of Santiago. Our reason for heading there was mainly to work out a way down to El Calafate. We only planned to stay a night in Puerto Montt - mainly because we wanted to get to South and being holiday season getting buses could be a problem. (Everyone in Chile travels over 2 sets of 2 weeks and this was then!) Our hostel in Puerto Montt had a tour desk and through this decided to splash out a little and book the horrendously expensive Cruce Del Lagos day excursion which would transport us from Puerto Montt to Bariloche on the Argentinian side of the Andes. This would be a day of travelling through the beautiful lakes and mountains instead of sitting on a bus going via the ... read more

South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Santiago February 1st 2009

We arrived in Santiago (Chile´s capital) with little expectation. People who we had met along the way had all indicated that there wasnt a huge amout to see or do. That the city was dirty and polluted and that it was a convenient stopping off point enroute North or South. Personally I (Gordon) have disagree and in a lot of ways prefered it to BA......not needing to avoid setpping in dog poo is a really good start! Arriving early in the afternoon from Quintero we dumped our gear in the hostel and headed out for a a walk around and bite to eat. The staple diet of Empandas (not a patch on the ones we had made in Quintero!). The walk was very nice. We wandered down to town. It was very quiet on account of ... read more
