Africa » Eritrea » West » Asmara April 16th 2018

I had no idea what to expect from Eritrea the airport was small and old which to be expected I suppose of a developing African country that has chosen to isolate itself from much of the world, but I moved through immigration quickly and scored a taxi for the ride into the city centre. There was little traffic on the roads which I assumed was due to the early hour, but I would later realise that there just aren’t many vehicles on the roads here at any time. Here are also no ATM’s, credit card facilities or any other way of obtaining more funds so I am lucky I had the forethought to bring much more cash then I normally would. Hotel reviews on the few advertised on line had not been good across the board, ... read more

A few days after returning from Baku I headed to the Duran Duran concert down at Dubai Internet City meeting some friends at the Radisson pre-concert before heading on to the concert amphitheatre. It was an excellent venue and although the booze was way to expensive, the lightshow and the atmosphere was top notch. Duran Duran kicked off quite late on a warm evening and the performance was first rate almost all the old hits were performed as well as a few decent new songs. A week later Ruth arrived in Dubai I met her at the airport on the Thursday evening and took her to my apartment and helped her settle in she seemed to like the view over The Creek. Next day we set off for the Marina taking a taxi because it was ... read more

The journey from Dubai to Baku is just a few hours and the airport is modern having opened not long ago, it was so good I took some photographs which I don’t normally do in airports. Azerbaijan is oil rich, so I wasn’t surprised to see some Dubaiesque skyscrapers with the Flame Towers perhaps the pick of the modern architecture. The guy from the hostel came to meet me at the airport and we travelled into the city centre in a London Cab which was cool. Stopping at the impressive Heydar Aliyev Cultural Centre along the way was also worthwhile as its design is certainly futuristic. The city runs along the Caspian Sea and has walled old town surrounded by the 19th century city surrounded by soviet and modern architecture. From here we continued to the ... read more

I hadn't visit Qatar for 15 years and to be honest it wasn't a very memorable place then but the city has grown. From the nice new airport to the nicely designed museums near the harbour I was pleasantly surprised. After arriving at the hotel I met up with a colleague and we set out to explore the city with the award winning Islamic Art museum the number one priority. The museum sits on a piece of land jutting out into to the harbour and is an impressively modern building with three floors of wonderful Islamic art, we spent several hours enjoying the collection. As we departed the sun was setting so we decided to take a boat trip on the harbour the new city with its many architecturally unique buildings was lit up on the ... read more

Europe » Serbia » South » Nis January 4th 2018

We departed Sarajevo before sunrise on a very cold morning (-7) as we made our way through the beautiful snow covered mountains toward the Serbian border, it was so beautiful that we had to stop and take a few photographs of the moon illuminating the snow covered mountain pastures and throw a snowball or two. As was wound our way through the mountains we followed the pretty River Drin gorge to the city of Visegrad before crossing the Serb border near the Tara National Park. Here we had something of a dilemma I wanted to head south through Kosovo to the bear sanctuary near Pristina but this would lengthen the journey and there was no guarantee we would get there before it closed, so we continued on towards Nis. The journey through southern Serbia was often ... read more

The terrain between the border and Trebinje was unusual there was little sign of habitation and the landscape was rocky and desert like which was certainly unexpected for this part of the world, but soon began to change as we came closer. On the outskirts of town we stopped at a service station for a coffee and to orientate ourselves a little before turning back down the highway and heading back towards the town centre where we took a right rather than the left we should have and ended up back near the service station although the drive through the outskirts of town were scenic. We then headed back to the town centre and headed left which took us to the older part of town where we hoped to find the Arslanagic bridge which fords the ... read more

Arriving at the border post at 8pm meant no traffic so we entered Croatia quickly and were soon back on the road to Dubrovnik which was only about an hour away, on arrival we headed to the guest house which was by the way very difficult to find, to find the place quiet with nobody there. So with some frustration we went looking for somewhere with wifi, but with new years eve upon us everything outside of the old town was closed except for the odd hotel so after what seemed hours we went there to see if they had rooms which they didn't but at least we could use their wifi over a beer or two. We looked on a hotel booking site or two but couldn't find anything close so we ended up staying ... read more

We left Probistip early the following morning, the boys are struggling with the cold but I am enjoying not being hot for once. The journey south was on excellent roads through pretty countryside, I had no idea that Macedonia had such beautiful snow covered peaks which we followed all the way south to the city of Bitola. Bitola is the home of the country's most important ancient archeological site Heraclea Lyncestis. This ancient Macedonian was founded in the middle of 4th century B.C. by Philip the Macedon, Heraclea existed for over a millennium as an important strategic point. We arrived around midday to find the site empty of people with a single caretaker in residence who seemed happy to take us to the gift shop and delivered a long but interesting discourse about the history of ... read more

Fog in Dubai delayed our flight by more than an hour so we didn't land in Skopje till 1pm, after that all ran smoothly we picked up our Skoda and followed our hostess through the city which contained an extraordinary number of statues to a restaurant located in an old monastery in the Matka Canyon. Matka means "womb" in Macedonian, the canyon is located west of central Skopje, and covers roughly 5,000 hectares, it is home to several medieval monasteries. The Matka Lake within the Matka Canyon is the oldest artificial lake in the country. The food was really good, the Macedonians has some fantastic cuisine and good beers. It started to drizzle as we followed the path down to the car park and getting quite dark by 430pm. We followed our hosts for the next ... read more

I arrived in Dubai and returned to work after just a few hours sleep, I delivered a few gifts to work friends and settled back into the team. Friday arrived quickly, I took a train to The Mall of the Emirates station where I boarded a taxi out to Sports city, I was heading to Dubai cricket stadium with some of my Sri Lankan work mates for the ODI between Pakistan and Sri Lanka. We decided to buy the more expensive tickets as that allowed us access to the stand with the bar, it is still damn hot so Anthony and I began consuming beers at a cracking rate while we waited for Dileepa and the others to arrive, soon I was surrounded by Sri Lankan lads who are always happy and smiling between pints of ... read more
