I didn’t waste any time once given the green light to go and booked it to Kochi, a smaller city on the coast of Southern India. We flew a small Kingfisher prop plane through a monsoon to get here so had a ball as usual. As soon as we got here, I immediately felt more at home. The apartment overlooks the Arabian Sea and from a distance it reminds me of the intercoastal waterways of St. Josephs Sound. Once you get closer the differences between here and home become more apparent: the trash, the murky polluted water, the smell of trash and polluted water. It’s sad but it’s still the Arabian Sea and I’m happy to be able to experience it. My roommate and I decided that the perfect post busy season getaway would be a ... read more

For once I was able to leave work while the sun was still shining. We’ve been working so late that the only thing to do once we get home is eat and drink and waste time until we can get back up and do it all over again. I had been counting the minutes until I could leave mainly because 1) I really wanted to see what Bangalore looked like in the daylight again 2) my roommate bought a case of Kingfisher and a hookah rig the night before and was in obvious need of some company, which me and JS provided in excess as usual and 3) no one should ever have to work on a Sunday anyway. On the drive home from work, as I was clutching my head in my hands, taking deep ... read more

This Sunday was Independence Day in India and we went to the flower festival in the Bangalore Botanical Gardens to celebrate. It’s nothing like the 4th, no fireworks or anything, but still pretty fantastic! I asked people who they were celebrating their independence from but was told no one in particular, they were just happy to be independent from someone. Maybe I look British to them. The gardens were wall to wall Indians and 5 white girls. There were so many people jammed into this place that there was a guy beating people back with a stick just to get the crowd under control. Of course, and for no apparent reason, we were escorted right past all the crowds of people and led directly into the park. I felt pretty horrible about it…but not enough that ... read more

The AirFrance flight from Paris to Bangalore was good. Minor bumps, etc. The plane was kind of rickety and made all sorts of creaking noises and the stewardess needs a new job. On the flight to Dublin my wine glass was kept full without me even needing to ask. On this flight, I spent 10 min trying to get the stewardess' attention and when she finally came over I raised my glass and asked for more wine. She took my glass and never returned. I had to flag down a different attendant. We went through this same procedure about 5 more times. And here I thought wine was their thing! Anyway, other than the judgmental stewardess the flight was good. It was business class so I got to lay down again! So finally got to India ... read more

We drove from Germany down into Zurich (not a big fan) and through Interlaken (huge fan!!) on our way to Bern. I'm planning on dragging Will to Interlaken next year for at least two weeks. It looked like it had every type of extreme sport there is. My extreme sport was taking a bus precariously dangling by a string 1500 ft into the air to get to the top of one of the mountains. The residents of the area told us it would have taken 3 hours to hike up and if it was up to me, that's what we would have done. My mom seems to have no fear so she ushered us all onto this thing and somehow we ended up making it. We walked down the mountain thank god.... read more

Next we took Ryanair to Frankfurt Hahn and hit up the Rhine River area. Very quaint and beautiful. I kept looking for Hansel and Gretel but never found them. I was also on the constant lookout for someone wearing Lederhosen but apparently those are not currently in style. One thing I noticed about Germany, everyone drives a BMW, Audi, or Porche! Yeah, they don't play around.... read more

I know that every city has its own individuality and eccentricities but I am always much more excited to see something natural rather than big city life. This was not the case with Edinburgh. Edinburgh is an amazing architectural site and one of the most striking cities that I have ever seen. The architecture looks gothic and moody, and the history of the city completely surrounds you. It was wonderful! I’m usually not a tour guide type but I was glad I was talked into one this time. The authors of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Sherlock Holmes are both from Edinburgh and I can see where they got some of their dark inspiration. It’s not all dark and gloomy. There are also mountains to climb that give a great view of the city, the ... read more

First stop was Dublin to visit my cousins! Had a great time as usual! I wished Will was there; he loves dark beer. Well, all beers really. The flight from TPA to ATL was so bumpy that the passengers started screaming like they were on a roller coaster ride in hell. I'm not exaggerating. By the time we landed I had made promises to go to church and just be a better person in general. I should have known we were in for it because the passengers that had just gotten off the plane we were about to get on all started clapping when they got into the terminal. Personal goal in India #1: Focus on finding some zen place in spiritual neverland I can go to when I need to be flown around. I have ... read more
