I like eating. I always have enjoyed food. I thought it was just because of the food but in India I realised that there are many things which let you enjoy a good meal.
I live in a very small village in Tamil Nadu and we eat rice every day. Rice is enough for the locals. Sometimes just water rice it's good for them (it's like a rice soup); often you can eat white rice with some vegetables (not too much!) or sambar; if you are lucky you can eat dosa (with the same sambar or with coconut chutney); and if you are super lucky you can have some chapatis (the sauce doesn't change). Idly is just for breakfast (don't try to eat it for lunch or dinner!!! This is not allowed). Once every three months some fried stuff (bananas, eggs, pakoda, bara, barei). Sometimes you can have chicken or some small fish. At the beginning eating meat or fish was a party for me but I think I became a vegetarian in India... I'm not sure, we will see what happens when I come back to Spain.
Sometimes food is boring (always the same) but you can enjoy
Every day...
Eating rice at Fatima's place. the conversation, the place, the views, the smell.... But this is pretty difficult when you don't speak Tamil and they don't speak English or when the place where you are eating is full of smelly dogs or your banana leaf (the plate) is full of ants..... What to do?
I travelled with my Australian friend Paul for five weeks around Tamil Nadu and Kerala and it gave me the opportunity of trying different foods! It was very good!!
Very good parotha (we ate many parothas! We started calling our trip the “Parotha tour”. And, you should see how they do it? Amazing!), thin dosas (I know now what a good dosa is), palak paneer (I love panner and spinach is good for my iron), veg bryani (I didn't enjoy my last chicken bryani which is very strange), putty (rice with coconut), upama (I don't know what this is exactlly but it's very good for breaksfast. Difficult to find in the South), fried rice (I know! It's also rice), puri (very good when they aren't too oily), culfy (sweet ice- cream), sweet pan (sweet explosion in your mouth! For me chewing for 2 minutes, Paul needs 10 minutes!).
Dosa
Some day we go to Habeeb's house. Good dosa! And what about drinks? Coconut water (on the road) or this amazing paum (tender coconuts. We had just twice), lassi (plain one), sugar cane juice (with lemon and ginger), fruit juice (vey good in Mamallapuram!), red indian wine (it was just fantastic after 4 months without any wine. Thank you Johnnie!), rum and cola (you can think that this is not indian but you should see the availability and the demand at the wine shops!), and chai, lots of chai (chinicam/ sugar comi/ little sugar)!!
I would like to go to North India. I'm sure there are many new foods waiting for me!
