On our way to the Pearl Market!
What an experience this was!!! We had been told that cheap goods could be found, by bartering with the vendors at the Pearl Market, which is in the south end of central Beijing. Mom, Dawn and I went, and T wisely stayed back in the hotel to rest form his morning at the Forbidden City. I don’t think we were ready for the Pearl market experience, as we all found it quite exhausting. The aisles and aisles of vendors kept coming at you, asking what you what - ‘what you like…? What you like…? Prada, Gucci, Dolce & Gabana…? What you looking for…? What you looking for…? Rolex.., sony…, iPod…,,,? Over, and over, and over again. The vendors will come out and pull at your arm, and follow you along. If you happen to stop and look at anything (it’s called browsing, lady, ever heard of that….!!!), you were almost swarmed. We all tried our hand at the bartering, with Dawn getting the most success. That was another great experience. You barter them down to something by starting out with a lo-ball (of course) and they reply “no joking; come on, serious price, no joking!” or some version of that. Dawn

Huge building that houses the market. Can get pearls (obviously), but also all kinds of goods and wares and pay discount prices (which is good, because not much of it is real!!!).
was pretty good, cause she wasn’t joking when she tried to get a pair of shoes for $4. No joking. Both parties walked away. In reality, I think the vendors know they were partially theatre (at least the younger ones seemed to). If you looked them straight in the eye and said ‘no thank you’ they usually stopped the onslaught. Usually.

Pointless
I was going to do a whole thing on Mount Fuji - but it just seems so unfunny now.
