Saigon By
Nessy and PeteMarch 22nd 2007 Saigon is a cool city, its a shame we only had a couple of nights here- and the days were spent out in the countryside. Its really lively and super trendy. We went to see the tunnels at Cuchi and some of the waterways where the mighty Mekong river disperses into the ocean.
Cuchi Tunnels
These tunnels are amazing. It took the country folk 20 odd years of war to make them the way they are now. When fighting, everyone lived underground where they had kitchens, sleeping quarters, mini hospitals and munitions factories. They've got all sorts of cunning tricks for staying underground and not giving away their position- like having huge and multiple chambers for absorbing fire smoke while cooking or wiping chillies around the secret entrances to throw off the sniffer-dogs. The yanks never flushed their enemies out of the tunnels which were a major cause for their withdrawal. Instead, they dropped as many explosives and chemicals as they could onto the hills until they were a wasteland.
Mekong Delta
These rivers are really cool- like mangroves where little Vietnamese people make coconut sweets and rice wine!
