Days 54 - 56. Friday 24th October. Woken up by Lin at 8.30am as she was heading off and wanted to say goodbye to us all before she did. So sat in watching films until checkout at midday. Our bus to take us to Hoi An arrived at 2pm. This journey was only 4 hours and the beds were so much more comfortable than the trip to Hue. We still had a ridiculous driver though who would overtake blindly on steep corners up in the mountains. He also almost hit a woman on a bike at one point but for the first time decided not to use his horn. It was dark once we arrived in Hoi An, more due to the weather than the time of day. It was torrential rain but the floods that we had heard about seemed to have gone. We stayed in the hotel right by our bus stop and it is only $4 a night each, although this means i have to share a bed with Paul. But it does have an indoor swimming pool! We went straight out for dinner, where i had burger and chips which i seem to have gone back to
The river in Hoi An
This flooded on the 2nd night over and over again these last few days. Here we stayed and played pool and drank as much as possible as it was happy hour from 4pm - 9pm. Paul somehow managed to get himself working behind the bar and set about teaching the other barman as many rude english words as possible. Later that night i'd return from the toilet to be welcomed by a 'hello wa**er' from him. He'd then be in hysterics and wouldn't be able to serve anybody for ages. The bar was supposed to close at midnight but by 1am we were still there, with Paul serving me very strong drinks. The girls that worked there said they had to get up for college at 6.30am and in the end gave up and slept with their heads on the tables. At 2am we eventually gave up, quickly helped tidy up and headed back to the hotel. It was still heavy rain and the streets were like rivers.
Really sick the next morning. Awoken early by a huge thunderstorm but by midday the rain had cleared. We heard that Hue was now under 2 feet of water so it seems we got out of there
Me, looking like a German
Notice how i always wear the same clothes!! just in time. Was hoping to rent motorbikes today but there was still too much water everywhere. In fact that evening we went for a few drinks by the river and the roads there were completely under water. We had a quiet night out that night, returning home to sneak past the least alert security guard ever who just sleeps by the door. Was awoken at 6am though by a drunk irish guy who had wandered into our room to have a piss on our floor.
We had to check out at 11am on our last day here (Sunday 26th October)and our bus to Nha Trang wasn't until 5.45pm. So we hired motorbikes for the day. All it took was $3 each and they were ours. No paperwork, no insurance, no deposit. Thinking back we should have just nicked them and driven down onto Nha Trang ourselves!! And i was given a helmet that made me look like a German. As it was our first real dry day here, we rode the 4km to the beach. It didn't take me long to get used to driving like a local, just plenty of overuse of the horn and some dodgy
overtaking. The beach was fantastic, even though it was cloudy, and i went swimming in my clothes as i was unprepared. It was good to get away from the main town and onto the smaller dirt roads. There was plenty of great scenery to take in and cows to avoid hitting. Now we are back at the hotel (which by the way is great except for the cockroaches that crawl around your feet as you try to use the internet), waiting to be picked up. Our next journey is overnight again and will take about 12 hours.
