Da Nang is the transport centre that serves the town of Hoi An that is arguably Vietnam’s prettiest. It probably isn’t anymore because as soon as a reputation like that emerges the tacky stalls appear by the dozen, but here even those are kept under wraps and it’s certainly the nicest town we visited. Anyway, we got off the train to be met by our hotel transfer which even included a refreshing towel and bottle of water each. As you can probably guess we’ve gone upmarket for a few days partly because we’re winding down as we come to the end of our year away but mostly to give us somewhere nice to celebrate our first wedding anniversary.

We were staying in a place called Life Resort and, well, it was very nice. Being the quiet season it was almost empty, but the weather was 35C and very sunny so for our purposes it was more or less perfect. Don’t expect much ‘edgy’ material from the next few blog days though!

Hoi An is famous for its tailors and it’s pretty much obligatory to have something made whilst you’re here. Our hotel recommended a tailor called ‘A Dong Silk’ so we paid them a visit because Gemma wanted them to make a copy of a cheap top she’d picked up in Bangkok. An hour or so later we emerged having placed an order for a suit, 3 shirts, a tie, some trousers (one pair each) and 2 copied tops. It was just so cheap.
