Edit Blog Post
Okay, okay- I know- it’s been a wee while since we have been skiing and I really took my time with my blog- but… here it is!!
My brother and I flew on the 6th of January to Munich- right, the German capital of excess Weisbier drinking, Lederhosen and other German major exports- to meet our Dad in advance so we can spend a couple of days together and discuss important things.
And guess what happens when more than 2 male Betzold’s meet at one place? (Remember we are in Munich…)
So we enjoyed 2 days where we talked a lot, ate a lot and of course…. enjoyed the beautiful German countryside a lot.
On the 7th we drove to Salzburg and had a quick look around this orsm town- not without bouncing into one Irish pub, where at least one of us had a beer- I think. We actually did make the effort and walked up to see the old castle but to our disappointment the footpath was closed due to heavy ice. So we had to use the time and enjoy the excellent weather and one another’s company. Which I thought was really nice- coz it
doesn’t happen to often that I have my Dad and my “little” brother around me- especially not at the same time.
Sad enough- Tommy had to fly back to Berlin that evening because he is doing his national service at the moment, protecting Germany against all evil?!?
So we dropped him off and drove back with our VW Touareg to our hotel in Erding to meet with good friends and celebrate (once more-) with a couple of drinks and a good game of table soccer, which- by chance- I won.
Next afternoon all of our skiing colleagues met up somewhere in the beautifull countryside of Bavaria- had a bite to eat and a sip to drink and started the feast that would last for the next ten days or so. I can’t really remember how things ended- it all got kind of blurry in the end (and it also wasn’t the last time for the next few days).
Next morning, we got up and drove to our first skiing resort- Gröbming! Where we would enjoy the nice and almost empty slopes for 6 days. What comes next is basically same-same for all the following days: get up
in the morning (after useless attempts to get rid of the bags under our eyes, or was that only me??), have a healthy breakfast (for a change), get onto the skies and go as fast as one possibly can down the slopes, after that we went into the sauna (whoever wants pictures of that- come and talk to me in private), had a fantastic diner and got shit-faced (at least some of the days).
2 - In words: two events did highlight this first week. One was a good one- the other wasn’t.
The bad one first- Dad managed to hurt himself- well he got injured a little- okay, he broke his right collar bone!!! Autsch!!! That itself hurts pretty much- what hurts probably just as much is the fact that he managed to do that on the first day and to round things up, he managed to break it within the first or second hour of skiing. Get well soon Dad!!!!!!
The second event was a fantastic skiing race with 3 disciplines which Caro and Kurti made up for us.
What did we have to do? We had to go down the slalom track twice, go
downhill as fast as possible from the highest mountain once and finally “sprint and drink” (more about that later).
The slalom was my favourite and of course (?!?) I won that part of the race. But due to the fact that all times of the 3 disciplines were added together in the end- everything was still open.
After the downhill race I was overall second- behind my toughest competitor Steffen “eat my snow” Harrer.
The pressure was on!
The last game had to show who would be winning the “Stoderchallenge”.
SPRINT and DRINK!
What did we have to do? With skiing boots on, we had to run about 50m and down a drink in the end -the girls had 0,2l of prosecco- and the boy’s 0,33l of beer.
Here I found out for the first time (?) where my real (?) qualities lay- it wasn’t running…
With a quick sip off my bottle the others had to learn what it means to be defeated!!!
After that we packed up our gear and moved to our second resort- Wagrain.
Again we had 3 absolute fantastic skiing days, the sky was as blue as can be, the slopes where great, and so was the food (…)
I really could have stayed a little (1 or 2 month) longer but all good has to come to an end.
So after these 10 ten days, which -again- where absolutely fantastic we all packed our bags and made our way home.
Its time to move on, have a good one!
