Ho Chi Mihn
Vietnamese Visionary Ho Chi Minh spent his life in the pursuit of improving the lives of the Vietnamese people. He was well educated and travelled extensively to broaden his understanding of life and learn the best ways to empower his fellow countrymen. He led the
Việt Minh independence movement from 1941 onward, establishing the
Communist-ruled Democratic Republic of Vietnam in 1945 and defeating the French Union in 1954 at the battle of
Điện Biên Phủ. He officially stepped down from power in 1965 due to health problems, but remained a highly visible figurehead and inspiration for those Vietnamese fighting for his cause—a united, communist Vietnam—until his death.
He was a humble man who never married but loved children and regularly invited them to visit him in his home and even had an aquarium for the delight of the young visitors. The Presidential Palace, of the French Colonial style, was far too ostentatious for his liking and he lived in a small home on the same grounds for many years and later in a stilt house built for him with just four small rooms. When the stilt house was constructed he kept the kitchen and dining room in the small residence nearby so it would be
a necessity for him to get some exercise several times a day.
Upon his death he wanted to be cremated but the people loved him so much they insisted building a mausoleum where he still lies today. He is visited by young and old alike. Visitors express their admiration and gratitude to the man who led the country to independence and reunification.
