This statue was a copy (size 1/16) of the famous Statue of Liberty in New York. It was made from bronze by a French sculptor. First it was placed on the top of Tortoise Tower at Hoàn Kiếm lake in Hanoi's center.

Irony of Fate
Dear Hanoi Girl, Yes, you are absolutely right! Having been to Hanoi and the Hoan Kiem Lake, it is farthest from my thoughts that the Statue of Liberty could stand on top of the Tortoise Pagoda. Notwithstanding the early presence of this iconic American statue in Vietnamese soil the world power never succeeded in colonizing your country, ironical isn't it? Again, you did an excellent job in bringing tiny bits and pieces of history in your latest blog. This is the first time I came to know that trams used to ply along the streets of Hanoi. Also, it's to see that the Flag Tower, Old Quarter and the Central Post Office remain intact through the years. Thanks a lot for sharing those beautiful photos and wealth of information. Your avid fan, Frankie

great photos
Good to see those old photos. Trang Tien street is very recognisable although there's a lot of building going on there recently- I hope it doesn't change too much. I was also interested to see the citadel; I'm always trying to have a look in there. I wish I was able to be in hanoi for the anniversary. Thanks Hong Ha
