After the waterfall our tour took us to Hellfire Pass and we also rode on the Death Railway. During WWII the Japanese put POWs to work building a railway through western Thailand. They worked day and night and thousands died. It's called Hellfire Pass because all the torches at night lit up the rock in such a way that it resembled hell.

The site of the railway is now a walking trail and a memorial. We walked down the trail, our guide pointing out things like where dynamite sticks had been blasted. It's so quiet and peaceful now, it's hard to imagine it any other way.

After visiting the museum we took the train along part of the line. The views were incredible, but it's sad to think about why the line exists.
