Waterfall
you could swim in the pools and they were pristine, other than the fishes Right... finally got a moment to myself to add more to the blog.
We’re sat on the coach on the way to Krabi from Phuket and I figure I’m stuck sitting doing nothing so why not.
We’ve finally escaped the madness of Bangkok! Actually thought we might just end up staying there for our whole year away, had to get up quite early this morning to make sure we were ready and at the airport by 10.45 which went really smoothly, feel like proper travellers already (except that apparently proper travellers on a budget -which is us- should be using the less comfortable and efficient methods of sleeper train/ bus- whoops!) which has probably just jinxed the crap out of the rest of our travelling. The flight only took one hour and fifteen minutes and suddenly it feels like a different country.
Anyway enough about the south for now (although I can’t wait to be dipping my toes in the sea)
I better tell you what we’ve been up to in our last days in Bangkok.....
On Wednesday we had a pretty ordinary day, although it could have gone a lot different if we hadn’t already booked tickets to erawan
Monkeeeyyyyyy
they were gorgeous, got up real close to them :-) national park (which I will tell you about shortly) and our flight down to phuket this morning.
Basically this director came to the guesthouse that we were staying in and said he needed extras for a film he was shooting in ko chang, which is an island just south of Bangkok. He was offering 1000TB (£22) and free transport as well as lunch. I’m still not sure if we would have gone for it, had we not already booked other things because the whole thing seemed a bit too good to be true. So we declined but our friends Nicole and Baz went for it along with about eight others from the guesthouse.
Turns out it was all kosher but it did completely tip it down the whole time they were there and I think the drive took about 6 hours each way, Baz and Nicole got back to Bangkok about eleven thirty last night looking completely and utterly shattered but with an extra 1000TB in each of their pockets which made it
sweeter I’m sure.
Yesterday we went to erawan national park which was absolutely amazing, the views were more breathtaking than an over friendly bear, what most
of Thailand would have been before tin and concrete and logging. I went for a swim in the pools formed in front of the waterfalls which were so refreshing and this amazing turquoise/blue colour; pools of pure paradise. Yasmin wouldn’t come in because there were these fish hanging round the edges (which is enough of a problem as she has a bit of a fish phobia) and one had a little suck on her feet so she freaked out and slipped right on her backside- which I thoroughly enjoyed until the same happened to me and out of reflex I kicked my foot- right into a rock!
It’s quite a trek, took us about three hours to go round the whole thing and in the Thailand heat it was hard work but totally worth it. By the time we had finished I was literally soaking with sweat and my swim shorts ripped in the most compromising place ( I was pretty much flashing to everyone for the bus journey back) Nevertheless I don’t think anything could have ruined that day and it was just good to be doing some site seeing again. I know for Yas the best thing about
Fish!
the infamous biteytoe fish otherwise known as carp feared by no-one except Yasmin! the park was the monkeys, we had heard that they were at the park but after trekking several hours and miles to the 7th tier waterfall despite all the jungle noises we had seen none. Just when we had given up hope on the way back, as we passed the 2nd tier we looked in the trees and they were everywhere! So sweet; proper little families of gibbons and it was so special to be so close to the monkeys as they roamed free in their natural habitat. I think that really made Yas’s day because of the whole fish incident and me making her jealous swimming in the blue lagoons! another thing that was very pretty was the butterflies, there were so many different colours and sizes and they just floated around you, as if you were a confetti tornado. It has got to be the only insect that you are happy to let swarm round you. Ever. Fact.
Oh mother nature, how do you create such diverse beauty?
We had got stuck in the mad night life and forgot how nice it was to be up before 12. Saying that I will still miss all the really
nice people we met in Bangkok, especially in the soi rambuttri area, near koh san road- would recommend it to everyone.
We’ve decided to list our top and bottom five things in Bangkok so here it is:
TOP 5
The koh san road area- such good fun and a variety of different places to eat/drink/shop.
The food- so tasty! Especially the pad Thai, spring rolls and the fruit is so much tastier.
The Thai people- so friendly, although some are trying to sell you things.
Price- pretty much everything is a lot cheaper, I guarantee you’ll spend lots though!
Sang som- the Thai whisky has really grown on me, and the 80% volume does wonders
BOTTOM 5
Tuk tuk drivers- I swear in England they would be done for harassment!
General creepy crawlies i.e. stray dogs (they haven’t heard of neutering here), families of rats and cockroaches (although touch wood none yet in the hostels!)
Toilets- you have to use this hose thing because the Thai sewerage system can’t handle toilet paper (which doesn’t bother me too much, but yas was using it completely wrong till very recently- lol)
suit sellers, tattoo artists and general street
sellers- for crimes similar to tuk tuks
The humid sticky heat which makes doing anything in the day a Mission!
