So here we are, back in Bangkok, waiting for our overnight bus down to Chumphon and then the ferry to Ko Tao (all for 850 baht/13 quid - pretty cheap!).
For the last 4 days we have been based in Kanchanburi, exploring the province and having an incredible time. We found a really nice guesthouse - Pong Phen, having looked at a few places but not really found what we wanted. Everything was really cheap, water 5 baht, food all under a quid! Also an aircon room was about 2 quid a night each! On the first afternoon we took the tour to the Tiger Temple. We were allowed to have hots taken with us stroking the tigers, although for the most part they were fairly subdued - ever since provoking much debate about whether or not they had been drugged! Still i also got ictures walking with them as they were being taken back to their cages for the day! At one point one tiger did infact get up wonder around then climb up[ and start a sort of scrap with another tiger which was interesting, mainly due to the inept handlers who seemed powerless but to watch!
The infamous slide of embaressment
Erawan waterfalls were so amazing! The next day we went on a huge tour package! First we went to the Erawan national park to see the spectacular waterfalls, which consisted of 7 tiers! The climb to the top was long and in patches tough (in flip flops that is!) but we made it up there first, overtaking loads of tour groups! We were straight in, and ignoring 'don't climb' signs we went up a fairly gentle slope to a higher tier where there were loads of fish and an awesome cave! We then followed monkey si up a nigh on vertical face next to where the water came down from (was a seriously impressive climb!) in order to get to the next tier up - willing to say i dont think many people have made it up there! Wasn't too sketchy and i was very very careful before you get too worried! So we did some swimming, went down a flume on the 4th tier which was good fun, then had lunch.. After lunch we were taken to the elephant camp where we rode through forest, and at one point through the river, with me and si taking turns to sit on the neck! Was
such a cool experience! Next we boarded bamboo rafts, which, due to lifejackets we were wearing in order to be able to go for a swim away from the raft, turned into something more like just floating down a river in a lifejacket than actually using the raft! Yet i did make an effort of asking the paddler guy (that's a technical term by the way) whether I could have a go, and it turns out, its bloody hard work!
Later on we visited Krawsae cave and then took a train along the death railway.. We decided as most of the normal seats were taken we would hang out of the door, which was so awesome as the train generally went pretty fast! Also saw the bridge over the river Kwae, and then returned to the guesthouse. That evening we played a lot of cards (having learnt the game 'shithead' from a guy called 'ru' - i think?!) and i had a few drinks which affected me more than i thought (beers are big here and hadnt had much water all day)..i'd sobered up enough (thanks to 'lays' crisps and water) in order to play some poker back in
the room but my pool skills were shocking, connect 4 skills even worse and i missed will holding some thai bird's hand! :-( hehe!
anyway after a relaxing day of nothing yesterday, we returned to bangkok this morning by bus... got another burger king....seriously we are TEXTBOOK English!!!! Love it! Miss you all hugely, love hearing from you all, and will hopefully make some calls soon! Sending stuff home is unfortunately off the cards though, due to huge prices! (4kg - about 28 quid!)
