Alright Dave!
At the Temple Bonjourno, we managed to get to Hat Yai and book into a cheap hostel on 1st April. After the travelling from Krabi we didn't get much of a chance to explore much before darkness descended (We did however manage to get a KFC, sooo cheap over here for a Zinger meal!)
The Thai Prime Minister is in hot water at the mo, he's been accused of corruption many times in the past but this time it's really serious- There've been protests around the country for weeks demanding he stands down. The situations got so bad that he has called an election for April 2nd, pledging to stand down if he doesn't get 50% of the vote. Why am i boring you with info on a political situation at the other side of the world you ask, well it was to have an impact on our plans for the night.
After a day of travelling and not doing much we were ready for a good night out. We'd heard that Hat Yai was supposed to have quite a good night life due to the fact its quite close to the Malaysian border. Its an outpost for many travellers and (apparently)
Malaysians that come here for dirty weekends???? Imagine our suprise when we found out that none of the bars in the whole city were serving alcohol! Was this some sort of sick April fools day joke-Apparently it wasn't. I can see the sense in not wanting people to get drunk the day before they have to vote in an election but it came as a bit of a shock. Early night it is then..
April 2nd=Election day. Me and Will decided to get up bright and early and get "some big guns in" aka all the sights that Hat Yai had to offer (Apparently it had some temples, and you can never see enough of them- ahem). We eventually managed to find this temple that was highlighted on the map, just as the heavens were beginning to open- It was lashing it down for hours! After doing a few Cookmeister poses by 2 foot statues at the temple and spotting a really tall Golden Buddha statue, we sought refuge from the rain in a huge shopping mall (Just like the Metro Centre). Was getting peckish so decided to go to Maccy D's- Big Mac meal for one please! (Again
sooo cheap, it'd be rude not to take advantage)
That night we headed out for our last night in Thailand!(Feels like we've been here for ages.)
For my last meal in Thailand I thought i should get some traditional rice dish or some Pad Thai (Noodle typed thingy) but Peppered Steak and Chips for just over a quid- again, it'd be rude not to take advantage! The place where we ate had Mr Bean on the TV, they were loving it!!
After food we went to a couple of bars with Live Music (Sometimes playing songs in English and sometimes even having the audacity to sing in their own language!?! what's the world coming to eh?) Was a really good atmosphere around all the bars, we ended up in a club typed place called Monkey Bar- It was awesome. The Live Music was by this Holtby lookalike called Ben (He also shared Ts musical talents) who was belting out some Thai classics by the sounds of things, it seemed to be a bit of a student crowd and everyone was singing along. The place was packed and me, Will and this Canadian couple who we got chatting to
The King of Thailand
Photographs and pictures of him are everywhere in Thailand- They love him were the only tourists in there- the locals are so friendly though and all like to talk to you about football and suchlike (Was singing You'll never Walk alone with one of them, could've been a night in the Griffin with Osborne!) They kept getting us to try whisky and beer together-not a great mix, but when in Rome as they say... The club shut at 2, but we got chatting to some of the locals and they said they'd drive us to another bar that was still open (brucey bonus). We were basically chauffered around to two more bars by this bloke with crazy long hair and his older sister where we got free drinks (whisky and coke again, not my usual tipple, but beggars can't be choosers) Crashed out back at the hostel at 4ish- What a night to send off Thailand in style.
Thailand, it's been emotional, we've shared some good times and some great times, but all things must pass- next stop Malaysia.
Mike
