Day Eighteen - Ist der a dungeon in de gesht haus?
After a sunburn interrupted night’s sleep, I was awoken at 6.30am by an almighty storm. Snoozing until 8ish we got up and it was still overcast. Packed, down to breakfast and checked out, our taxi arrived around 10am just as the heavens opened again.
It was hammering it down and it didn’t look good for getting the ferry but we ran out to our pickup and got our rain macs out as we drove to the southern pier. When we got there the storm was whipping up but the boat headed out all the same. The crossing wasn’t all that bad, a few bumps aside and we soon got to Phuket. All in all, it worked out a good day to move on from Ko Yao Yai as the rain didn’t stop until after 3pm.
The next section of the journey was comedy though. The taxi driver hadn’t a clue how to get to our hotel. We had decided to splash out a bit and spend the night in a nice resort hotel but it took about 30mins driving around in circles to get there. Quite the
mystery tour.
Sadly the fun was to end there for a bit. The Airport Resort claimed our booking had never arrived from Hostelbookers despite us having a confirmation. It can happen, especially as we had only booked the evening before but I started to get uneasy when the receptionist was offering to give me the deposit back. If Hostelbookers had fcked up surely she’d send me there to chase it??
Then she managed to find us a place nearby for exactly the same money. Hmm. They also wanted us to pay there and then. So we refused and asked to go and see it. It was ok but nowhere in the same league. Behind it I had noticed Tanamas Guest House which had great reviews so I nipped in there. They had no rooms but when I asked the guy for a recommendation he made a quick call and secured us two rooms around the corner. He was also astonished at what the place was trying to charge and said it should have been one third to half.
We got our driver to take us to the Nan Yiang House which was a steal. They had no
aircon rooms left and it is no high end resort but it is clean and quiet. A Dutch couple who were cycling through Thailand said they came here regularly which was reassuring, despite him looking a tad like Joseph Fritzl.
Anyway, we got settled in and went for lunch. The menu was a simple one pager with about eight dishes on it. I ordered Fried chicken with cashew nuts and can say hand on heart it is the best food I’ve had on this trip. We’d found a little gem which was restoring my faith in Thai people after our brush with some slimy feckers.
After lunch, we had a quick scrub up and walked to the beach through the local temple. There we managed to see our duplicitous receptionist who quickly jumped on her scooter and took off. If she was trying to buy back some karma good luck to her.
The beach - Hat Nan Yai or Nan Yiang Beach - was lovely. Sitting in a Marine Park it is cleaner and less busy than Kata. The girls took the opportunity to have a quick dip as the day drew to a close. Over dinner
we agreed we’d got a lucky break at the end of the day and retired a hell of a lot happier than when we arrived.
Today’s Highlights Shannon thinking she was going to die on the ferry; The comedy mystery tour; and finding a truly marvellous Thai guest house on our last day in the country.
